I was in The White House in 2002. Security was still extremely tight due to 9/11. A friend of mine worked in the press office of The White House and invited me to his "workplace" after hours. Wow! He managed to take me through parts of The White House that night that normal tourists never get to see. In fact, we only ran into two other people during our walk and they were a part of security. To this day, it's one of the highlights of my life. As we strolled the halls and into the various rooms, all I could think was how many presidents also entered these rooms. We have an incredibly story of rich history to preserve for future generations. I was delighted that night to know our beloved White House is well taken care of.

People dont realise moist of the Whitehouse is only 70 years old - few parts are the original ... considering the fire of 1812 and the main renovation in the late 40s early 50s authorised by Harry Truman who spent less time in the Whitehouse during his presidency. Indeed Truman was an exceptional President.

The neo-classical design you see in the Entrance Hall, Cross Hall, State Dining Room, and East Room date from Theodore Roosevelt's 1902 renovation. During the Truman renovation, all the historic interiors on the state floor (moldings, paneling, fireplace surrounds, etc.) were carefully dismantled, stored, and then reassembled in the rebuilt White House. The only thing that couldn't be saved were the plaster ceilings.

In 2001 ( Before 9-11) we were visiting our son in the D.C. area.
His friend worked for the Secret Service at the time and arranged for a private tour of the West Wing.
Got to see rooms not on the regular tour.
Roosevelt Room, Cabinet room press briefing and even the Oval Office.
Oval office was roped off so couldn't walk around inside but we could lean in for a better look.
After the tour the tour the agent asked if we'd be interested in seeing the Secret Service Command Center which at that time was located on the top floor of the Executive Office Building next door t to the White House.
    Of course we said yes!
West wing tour started at 8:00 p.m. and by the time we left the Secret Service center it was after midnight.
This was 4 months before 9-11 and no idea if you can get a tour this good anymore.

Told me to hold out my hand, spoke something into what I assumed was a microphone on his wrist and next thing I I need there were 2 laser sits on my hand .
Luckily they knew not to shoot.
In the Secret Service center one of the guys at one of the dozens of computers asked if I wanted to be either amazed or scared?
To get into the White House we had to show our drivers license and give our Social Security number.
Don't know what the guy put into his computer but in under a minute he knew my address, phone number, the 3 previous places we lived and to freak me out even more he told me where my brother and sister lived, where they worked, where their kids lived and what everyone's birthday was!

Little-known fact: those carvings in the wall around the entrance to the Grand State stairway that you see at 18:40 and again around 19 minutes, are the seals of the original 13 states. I saw the White House back in 88. I was stationed in Aberdeen for training, later was sent to Germany. I always wanted to see Washington DC and on the weekend I went there.
I got dressed up in my uniform because someone told me, you it can be beneficial to be in uniform where you don't have to wait in line there. They'll just move you to the front. It was true, I went to the Whtie House and I got an imediate acess to the tour. All I had to do was show my ID. I saw the Senate and House and I was moved to the front of the line. Same goes for Ford's theater. I didn't have to wait I was moved to the head of the list. I heard securtiy has changed a lot since then. I was able to stay at the hotel for service people. It was about one fourth the price for what one had to pay for a normal hotel. Even got to eat in the mess hall there for regular army. The food was extra good. When I had to go to Germany there was a mix up on my plane ticket and I had to actually go to the Pentagon to correct it. I saluted a Colonel there and he told me, saluting is not required there. And I went to an office. A woman who knew the ins and outs of everything got me a ticket with no problem. She told me she had been working there since Roosevelt was President. I talked with one soldier in Germany who worked in the White House and I asked him if is true about a certain President who womanizied. He said there was no end to it.

    FYI,
the security officers (CIA department) in white shirts inside the white house are currently as of 2023 paid sixty thousand dollars a year at the entry level and with experience (working years there) can make up to 80 thousand or more a year. The top security (CIA inspector) makes over 160 thousand a year. Security is always rotated to different posts as a security measure unless the president or the first lady specifically ask to have a certain security person at a specific post at a specific shift because at the end of the day, the president is the boss of anyone that works in the White House until their last day in office.

But, come on. They are not doing rocket science work. The CIA department that does have higher levels where they get paid up to 160 grand a year is more equivalent to higher pay and they do get a higher pay. But, the guards standing around the white house get paid well for what they do. The ones who should get paid more so they can survive and not end up homeless are the lower middle class and the poor. But, thanks to bought off politicians, the national minimum wage and state minimum salaries never keep up with soaring rents, food and other cost of living expenses.

You're right. The White House is too small for today's presidency. They agonize over guest lists for state visits because there's not enough room for all of the people. The State Dining Room only holds a cramped 130, even though they'd like to invite hundreds of people. In the late 1940s when the White House was falling apart they actually considered bulldozing it and building a new "White House" that would be at least three or four times larger. Harry Truman made the final decision to keep it "as is" out of respect for history. The house was too historic and too iconic to be demolished.

The WhiteHouse is ADA compliant and wheelchair accessible. Contact your representative in congress, their office will arrange it for you

Is there a dress code for when you’re on a White House tour? Do you have to wear business casual attire?

    • @DrGariS
      @DrGariS  4 роки тому +3

Nope, there’s no actual dress code. Jeans and a tee-shirt is ok! :)
