      Rapture582 Detroit does have plans for reclaiming the abandoned lots (which it has a lot of), which is necessary in order for the city to start growing again. I love Detroit and my grandparents live there, however Grand Rapids is perhaps the fastest developing city in Michigan. It’s leading the state in other fields as well, such as river restoration and clean energy goals. The official GRForward 5 year plan has set one of the goals to be all city buildings running 100% on clean energy by 2025.

    Excellent. Someone please inform both Lansing and the advertising firm that does those dozy, schmaltzy Pure Michigan ads that THIS is how you sell your State. This ad paints a strong picture of Grand Rapids as exciting, growing, colorful, diverse, with rich arts, new economy jobs, solid nightlife, and seated in the middle of gorgeous 4-season lifestyle surroundings (yes, we swim AND ski here). On top of all that, it was full of appealing short quotes from solid sources that can easily be referenced. In other words, this ad aced selling every positive aspect about the place that someone thinking about moving there would ever want to know. Heck, after seeing this, I'm ready to move there.

      Use the same company that did this. They promoted Grand Rapids as having a Lake Michigan coast.... so they can probably drive some traffic if they promote Lansing as an "Island City".

    • @daveth121864
      @daveth121864 2 роки тому

      @@atraintzb I see your point. However, GR is closer to Lake Michigan than Denver is to the Rocky Mountains. Would anyone question whether Denver is right there at the foot of the mountains? It's perspective, and unless you're the mayor of Grand Haven or Holland, I think we can give GR the benefit of the doubt when it comes to what we have to offer visitors. And if you're a travel agent or a concierge, would you promote the lake as a great reason to visit? Hell yes you would. :) With all due respect, A Train. ;)

    • @atraintzb
      @atraintzb 2 роки тому

      @@daveth121864 I would absolutely agree with you …. But then we would both be wrong 👍🏼. G-Rap is a nice place. It’s not coastal. You’re welcome.

    Love this video. Everyone's been thinking all this, and this video finally said it. Also, I love the amount of time they spent lingering on the dunes and the lakeshore. Grand Rapids needs to continue to tie itself closer to the lakeshore. The dunes are the most unique and beautiful natural phenomenon on the planet and no one outside of west michigan knows about them. Its a travesty. This video was perfect.

    DUDE. So many butthurt people from GR here. I'm legitimately embarrassed for all of us for the moment when someone from outside of GR comes down to read these comments. I understand that it's easy to post whatever you want on the internet because you're behind a keyboard, but COME ON people, this is YOUR city. Grand Rapids is a genuinely beautiful, thriving city with tons to offer. Sure, there are some things that aren't all hunky dory, but that's reality, and you can't escape those kinds of things in any city similar to GR. The thing that makes the city bad are the people in it that would rather whine about the things they've heard about the city in the comment section of a video, rather than leaving their computers and actually attempting to make any sort of change. Have some respect for the people that have helped develop the city to make it what it is today. I'm disgusted by the people of the GR community that have made their way to this comments section just to post their negative comments about ONE 2.5 second clip that has the most minute error or camera angle.
    I hope that one day you have the chance to experience a less privileged community that will help make you see that we are blessed to be able to have what we have in front of us, and learn to have a basic sense of respect for your community and the people in it.

      A few haters out there, and even more numerous - the common North American smart ass. Ignore them the same way you would at a check out line, on an airplane, or in a classroom. It reflects on them, not the fantastic and oh-so unique city we are lucky to support. The good news is that as they mature, the common North American smart ass often tends to migrate south for longer and longer stays. (Please don't feed them.)

      +GBev2K There is no evidence to support the allusion that breweries cause an increase in alcoholics or even drinking. Just because you live near a brewery doesn't not require you to patronize that establishment and if you choose to you are not required to imbibe but if you choose to you are not required to drink to excess, ever. So stop making up long drawn out baseless scenarios and evidence some truth.

      +Waffle_Jeep I've only lived in Grand Rapids for 26 years, downtown. I've never considered the public transportation to be "shitty" but that's because I'm aware it's not just the city of Grand Rapids that responsible for most of it. It's only shitty because other municipalities can't perceive a benefit. It's also not shitty when compared to the dozen of other city's public transportation systems I've used. None are perfect and rely heavily on my understanding them and appreciating their limitations too.

      +Michael Mast Both GR and the suburbs need to make a large effort at transit oriented development. I'd be interested to see what Wyoming and Kentwood are doing around the Silver Line. If they aren't redeveloping these used car lots and fast food joints, they are wasting the potential of the line and preventing it from being a successful precedent for more transit.

    Is "Storytelling Pictures" made up of HS interns? I noticed a bunch of mistakes - missing punctuation, miscapitalizations, and some of the phrases projected onto buildings were only on the screen for less than a second before disappearing, way too short amount of time for people to actually read them. Other than that, great video - they just should've run it by more people as a 2nd set of eyes to catch basic mistakes like this first, before making it live.

      Smrtr ThanYou I hope you realize that Grand Rapids is responsible for its own success and expansion, just like Lansing. The state can help, but it’s up to the city and its citizens. I say Grand Rapids is well on its way to surpassing a lot of cities and becoming the fastest growing city in Michigan, and perhaps the country. A few years from now and we could be the new state capital. I want Lansing and Detroit and all the other cities here in Michigan to grow, but the simple truth is: Grand Rapids is succeeding. I’m happy for my city.

    What the video lacks is how bad the weather is. It's REALLY BAD. Cloudy days, tons of snow. Lake Michigan's pretty but when it's 60 degrees and cloudy who is having fun at the beach or any outdoor activity.?It's also rather dull unless your into drinking beer and more beer. UGH

      When it's 60 degrees & cloudy people in NYC are dying to go outside- if we aren't already there- so it surprises me to hear that Grand Rapidians ( with tougher & longer winters than our's ) wait it out even longer.

      +oleboithug I lived in Wyoming in the past and I live in Grand Rapids itself now.So I'll be more than happy to tell you the difference. While Grand Rapids itself has exploded back to life in the recent decades, Wyoming is still in a stagnant hole full of Boost Mobiles, Dollar Stores, Pawn Shops, Pay Day places, and an 80 acre parcel that is still sitting idle since GM closed the stamping plant. Oh and lets not forget how long ago it was when studio 28 was demoed. That's still an empty lot too. And who can forget the stupid ass cop fee that was in place until recently. That was a real dick move Wyoming did right there.. So why the difference? Grand Rapids had people that at least knew how to run a city. Wyoming had a bunch of knuckle heads that don't know their ass from third base when it comes to running a city.

    I would add to that: unfriendly to middle class renters. Prepare to live in a shithole or pay way more than you should for a decent place. Otherwise it's pretty decent city.

      Andy Clark Simple economics- you want to live somewhere desirable? Then you're gonna pay more. GR isn't the only place in the world where it's more expensive to live in a nice place

      +Andy Clark I own rental property in Heritage Hill. If you can't afford to live in a certain neighborhood that's not the fault of others. You have some choices to make in life and they're yours, not mine, to make for you. I grew up in a suburb in Ottawa County. You could try renting there.

    Great video but missing one aspect, Diversity. The city is so diverse and the video should do better portray that. It is also a global city too. Perhaps they should have highlighted all the colleges in their city too

    The psychological profile of the average law enforcement officer is indistinguishable from the average felon. That is a fact that can be verified by many studies which can be found on the internet. So don't take my word for it. Look it up. Having said that, you would think that a psychological evaluation of a recruit would be in order and more importantly, an on going maintenance of these evaluations, two or three times yearly. If these officers were viewed as 'injured', as surely anyone pointing a gun at an eleven year old truly is, then we would see to it that cops get the psychological help and follow up treatment that anyone in this line of work really needs. I personally believe that if a black cop was attending to this incident it would have went differently. Why not have black cops deal with calls from black citizens and white cops deal with whites. It would seem a giant step backwards in race relations but it would also be a near certainty that police shootings and killings and outrages like this incident would see a sharp drop. The resistance from the law enforcement community would be swift condemning such an idea. Then we would have to ask, why? Or, why not try and see what comes of it? Then they will respond with where's the money going to come from, or, there are not enough black police, or a thousand thousand other legless arguments which would be put forth against trying to make things better. The cost of litigation and law suits against police departments would easily pay for these psychological evaluations. There are many ways to fix this broken system. What is needed is willingness. Willingness is in short supply

    This is what every City should look like after the Governor of your State dumps all the money into it. See if our Governor didnt poison the People of Flint and left Detroit for a wasteland. All of Michigan would and should look like this!

    • @stivscott5433
      @stivscott5433 7 років тому +2

      Seriously, I'm not at ALL arguing with you (there is no arguing that Flint got totally screwed by everyone - especially the Governor) but PLEASE don't give any credit to Governor Snyder for anything good that is happening in Grand Rapids. That city is doing well because there are many benefactors that have made it great. I don't agree with the politics of The DeVos family, (especially Betsy) but I sure am thankful for all that they have done for West Michigan. In addition, there are so many more families (VanAndel, Meijer, Cummings, Secchia, etc., etc., etc) that have done so much for Grand Rapids. Giving Snyder any credit for Grand Rapids is wrong - and if he claims credit - well, that just opens a whole can of worms itself. Have a nice day.

    i've been here 8 years, NEVER seen three feet of snow. I LIVE downtown, there is no massive traffic issue downtown other than it's a DOWNTOWN area. Alcohol, which you spelled wrong, is obviously the only thing you found because it's the only thing you sought out. I'm sorry but you Nelissa are the false advertising.

    Instead of misleading Lake MI, they should have included Reeds Lake w/the sailboats & marina. And how many black people live here? Surely shows we do not embrace diversity.
