Sacra di San Michele

The Sacra di San Michele is an architectural complex perched on the summit of Mount Pirchiriano, at the entrance to the Val di Susa, in the city of Turin. From the 12th to the 15th century it experienced the period of its greatest historical splendor, becoming one of the main centers of Benedictine spirituality in Italy. In the 19th century the congregation of the Rosminian fathers was established there. The Early Middle Ages saw the construction of numerous religious buildings in Europe dedicated to the Holy Archangel. The date of construction of the actual complex is identified between 983-987, although others identify it between 999 and 1002. In the mid-11th century the structure of the abbey was entrusted to the Benedictines who were able to progressively develop its meaning spiritual, giving asylum to pilgrims and protection to the populations of the area. In fact, in this period the guesthouse building was built, detached from the monastery, and able to accommodate the numerous pilgrims who, traveling along the Via Francigena passing through Moncenisio, went up there to find physical and spiritual refreshment. The northern part of the complex, now in ruins, was built in the 12th century as the "New Monastery", for which all the facilities for the life of many dozens of monks were added: cells, library, kitchens, refectory, workshops. The current church, also called "New", is the result of more than a century of interventions. Between 1120 and 1130, the sculptor Niccolò worked there, but also Pietro da Lyon. From the very high multi-storey prothyrum, you can access the staircase of the Dead, so called because in ancient times it was flanked by tombs. An intriguing complex of interconnected spaces. Interesting for its history and collection of religious sculpture and wall painting. This is an organic organization of spaces that does not conform to our usual established hierarchic order. The setting, perched atop such a high point is astounding.
