    On my sailboat I use a small pressure cooker and after hot wrap it in a towel.
    The pressure cooker has a sealed top so it will not spill while I sail.

    You missed a big economy factor: The lost power for the stove itself is probably less than what you do (I'm in sweaty FLorida) to get that heat OUT of the house! That fifty cents worth of power on the stove might be a few dollars worth of A.C.! I think people like this kind of machine b/c it simplifies your life, and it won't BURN food that's sitting in there for a long time. So, it's a winner!

      People sometimes don't think about all the heat that is generated when they fire up the stove or oven to make meals. The air conditioner works overtime when the kitchen is filling with steam from three or four pots of food. We can cut that down by cooking larger batches, and putting the rest in the fridge for the next day or two, or freezing it. The air conditioner, especially in Florida, is always on my mind, because we get killed with electric bills in the summer. Eating cold salads, cereals, sandwiches and fruits for meals in the summer saves a bundle in electric.

    I have the same model thermal cooker, been using for 3 years. It is certainly economical, but also makes thoroughly tender meat stews, soups, and beans. Saves $ and the result is better.

    I have the same brand of thermal cooker. It's great for making polenta because no need to stir. Bring the water and ingredients to boiling then stir in the corn meal with a whisk. It will coagulate within minutes and then I put it to thermal cook for 3 to 6 hours. This thermal cooker will keep the food hot (not warm) for 12 hours in the tropical climate where I live. I use it 3 times a week and just bought a second thermal cooker.
    For cooking dry corn for pozole it takes 2 trips through the thermal cooker. It's brought to a boil and sits over night in the thermal cooker, then again it's reheated and sits in the thermal cooker 3 to 6 hours and the corn will be tender and expanded, ready for making pozole.
    My pressure cooker also comes with a thermal cooker bag. I bring the beans up to pressure and immediately put it into the thermal bag. In about 3 hours the beans will be soft and tender.

  • @Jameslauu

    Great idea! I think this idea should receive more credit
    A thermal cooker is more popular in Asian continents where typically a lot of dishes include stews, broths, etc
    I can understand if the majority of the viewership here prefers the crockpot alternative since the crockpot fits very well within US style of cuisine
    typically if you want a really strong arome, flavoured barbecue ribs, you will need the pressure cooking from the crockpot for the ribs to soak up the flavours
    whereas a pork brisket stew doesn't require as much heat because the flavours stay within the soup base
    Ironically, it is very difficult to find a good crockpot over here in Asia compared to the exuberous number of crockpot choices you can find over on amazon US
    In the end, it boils down to what type of dishes you want to cook yourself and your family
    both thermal cooker and crockpot can be useful

Covered the pressure vent with a shot glass and in the box it went covered with extra layers of insulation. Experimenting with different foods and times. So far so good. It takes way longer for the temp to drop from a higher starting point.

    I think I was just as interested about your use of coriander in your chicken as I was about the cooker itself. I can't remember what coriander tastes like. I think I should probably try it. The cooker is an excellent purchase. It is convenient to those who don't like slow cookers for some reason. This essentially is a slow cooker without the electricity. This cooker would do very well at a campsite, or when you want to cook something if your electric is off, and sitting over a grill for long periods is not your idea of fun. Thank you for that review. I think I will look into it. Usually when I cook, I use an extremely large teflon frying pan, and put all my stuff in it - meat, vegetables and potatoes. I bring it to a boil and then put it on low. I let it cook on low for an hour or more, depending on what I am cooking. So the one pot thing saves a bunch right there.

      the first thing i did was try cooking rice, in the same rice/water ratio as usual- like a charm, but maybe use a little less water next time, as no steam escapes from this thing.
      then today i tried cubing some potatoes, adding a couple chopped shallots, some curry, garlic, and hatch chile powder (red), some freeze-dried black beans and corn, and a couple heaping tablespoons of coconut milk powder. brought to boil in water to cover, took off fire and into the thermos crock. then, for good measure here in the american desert southwest, i set the whole thing in the sun for a couple hours, and WOW!
      a thermal cooker might just be a camper's best friend.

      It is completely safe and extremely common to sous vide chicken drumsticks to 158F or 70C. Since the temperature is kept there for an extended period of time, it kills off the bacteria and is safe to eat. This is different from grilling where if the internal temp just reached 158F after 10 mins, it would not be safe to eat.

    • @DarkRahl69

      Good point, however heat is a measure of the average motion of particles in a given area. You cannot transfer heat through space, since there are so few particles in space to transfer the motion. What you can do is propel radiation through space, which is what the sun does. It starts with the fusion of hydrogen into helium, two Hydrogen atoms have more mass than one Helium atom. The remaining mass is released as energy in the form of a photon, which is radiation. A little bonus, that photon takes about 100,000 years for the photon to reach the surface of the sun and than about 8 minutes to reach Earth. If the star has enough mass it will eventually fuse two Helium into one Lithium. This process continues till Iron (FE) which actually has more mass than the two Manganese, that fuse to make it. In other words Iron and above actually cost energy to fuse, unlike the previous elements that have excess energy when fused. So if a star is massive enough to produce Iron, than making that Iron will be its undoing. This may make you wonder how the elements above Iron are produced, that happens in a supernova blast. There are different types of supernova depends on the mass of the star. But the point is the same, elements are shot out with such force that they actually start stripping off the electrons and creating a plasma. Those stripped off electrons are colliding with other elements some of which would be Iron. Those collision are what create the elements above Iron. This is why Uranium is radioactive, since is has too much mass to be stable, it slowly releases excess energy in the form of radiation. This will have a predictable rate, called a half life.

    So you have to cook a 1000 hours in order to get your return on investment? But that's not even including the amount of power needed to heat the thermal cooker itself.

    • @BeatTheBush
      @BeatTheBush  6 років тому

      ROI excludes the initial heating. Time in the thermal cooker is time reduced on the stove. So it may take 4+ months of usage but it's certainly faster ROI than solar panels of 20 years.

    • @LinedFury
      @LinedFury 6 років тому

      It costs $51.42 with the link you provide, according to your $.05 of savings per hour. You would need to cook for over 1000 hours to gain your money back. What I'm saying is that if you were to cook using the thermal cooker you still need to use money to heat it in the first place. Therefore adding into the cost, so the savings is actually less than originally stated. Also why did you bring up a ROI of solar panels? Obviously it's less than 20 years to recoup your money, but to buy it specifically with the goal of savings is a bit ridiculous.

    • @BeatTheBush
      @BeatTheBush  6 років тому

      Yup. It's the cooking time not used. So if cooking the thing takes 1hr 20 minutes normally, you have to heat it 20 minutes initially. Then you save 1 hour.

    • @obsoleteprofessor2034
      @obsoleteprofessor2034 6 років тому

      Where you get into trouble on solar panels is that your property tax goes up and will not go down even after removing the system. Even if you were to call for a reassessment, most likely the taxes will still go up due to rising housing prices.. that has been my experience in California... think Proposition 13.

      I've used pressure cookers for years. The old stories about exploding pressure cookers are what keep many people from buying them, but they have little valves in the lid that will blow if the pressure gets too high due to a clog. I have never had a problem. Cuts cooking time to minutes, and will tenderize the toughest piece of meat, while keeping in all the flavor and moistness. Mine lost it's seal, and I couldn't replace it. I really need to get another one. I miss it.
