if we did he'd lock them up. opps wouldn't get a shot off, I dont care how many 3s they tried to put up. and forget sneaking by him at the post. sigh. basketball when it was still actually basketball. please come back! LOL
I was lucky enough to have Michael Cooper as our spokesperson for our City of Hope 10K run fundraiser. I have two pictures of him and me. That was in the mid-80s. I remember putting my arm around him and saying,: "You are SO thin!" And he replied, " Slender." I love that guy!
NBA in the 80's and 90's was the best version of this league ever Well deserved, Cooper was a hungry dod on the floor. We don't see players like him anymore.
Stats don’t do Coop justice. The impact he had on those Showtime teams was immeasurable. He could always be relied on to come off the bench and provide instant energy. He’d guard the other team’s biggest perimeter threat, was ahead of his time the way he could shoot the 3, and can’t forget his and Magic’s trademark Coop-A-Loop. Love you Coop 💜💛
Been a fan of Michael Cooper since he was a Lobo. In fact, he would come back to New Mexico and hold basketball camps called “Coop Camp” and I had the pleasure of designing the programs for his camp as a young graphic designer. I met Michael many years later at a party in Los Angeles and he was such a nice guy. In fact, we introduced him to a friend of ours and I think they actually dated for awhile. I think Coop needs to get together with James Worthy and be the new Laker head coaches… that would be something! Time to bring back the winning Laker traditions! Congratulations Michael!
Guys like Cooper worthy Kareem etc explain why we love Lakers they play with heart intensity and great dignity defense is the key to be great and coop hoop loop a doop was the best defense player of Lakers thank you Michael
I called it w/ work buddies 4yrs....the young guys were saying Dray Green should b a hall of farmer. I chime n, not b4 Lakers Mike Cooper. They laughed at me & said Coop was from the olden days. Then I encouraged them 2 do their UA-cam homework on him. Took them 3 days & they said ok maybe you're right....
My favorite Laker of all time. First game I saw him he came in off the bench and got a steal off an inbounds play and a couple minutes later got an offensive rebound off a missed free throw. Complete disrupter to the other team. One of those players that could play in any era and seamlessly fit in with any team. I had hoped Trevor Ariza would be the new Coooooop but he left in free agency.
Man o Man, does this guy deserve this honor big time, big time player with those high sox and laces from his shorts dangling down, long time Celtics fan here and in 1987 NBA Finals he killed us with those 6-7 3 pointers in one game sorry cant remember with game, Love watching him play because for a skinny man he was physical, tough and played tough defense. Ask Larry Bird
WAY TO GO COOP!!! About bloody time!! I'm a die-hard Celtics fan, and as much as I HATED the Showtime Lakers, I couldn't be mad at them individually. My fave players behind Bird and his big 3 are Magic (3-way tied as goat with Bird and MJ on my personal list), Nique, Coop and Byron. And I wouldn't admit that in my family for yearrrrrs LOL. Some people dont realize what a problem Coop was back in the day. For the 80s Celtics and Bird fans, HE was the guy we paid attention to. He could steal or smash opp shots from practically anywhere--which was deadly against a long-2 shooter like Bird or post demons like McHale and Olajuwon. CONGRATS COOP!! Even those of us who wanted to hate you love you!! 😄 #ShowtimeLaker21🏀
If Coop had played in this series, he would have shut down Murray for sure. He may be able to help defend Porter Jr., who for some reason gets red hot against the Lakers.
Dr. Buss cut coop this summer before the 1991 season. He ended up regretting it when the bulls beat the lakers in 5. Coop could have been the difference in that series, or at least extended it to a 7 game series. As is, no one was there to slow down jordan while pippens did a great defensive job on magic. Coop would have guarded jordan well, just like what he did to the likes of bird and Dr. J.
@hanj31 you know, I never noticed that. OMG I'm a dumbass LOL. I've just been too used to that happening all the time at the high school and collegiate level I guess lol. thanx for the info! 😆
If only we had another Coop on the Lakers these days...

Coop would be a perfect 3 and D guy in this era. In podcasts with B Scott, he was funny as hell too😂
Well deserved and like Worthy said “it’s about damn time”. Thanks for posting!
I was setting up to say "Its about damn time" What were the Lakers w/o a Coop a Loop?
All those Showtime Laker teams should be in the HOF they saved the NBA.

HOF’er but he doesn’t have his number up in the rafters??? Maybe that’s next at some point.
Coop's getting his number retired by the Lakers in January.
Missing leak to win NBA FINALS title nobody on the bench 2024
Dr J, did his most famous dunk rock the baby on you Mr. Copper.
Maybe the closest we had to michael cooper was Dennis Shroder.
Only thing left is for the lakers to retire 21
Wait...they haven't already??
