My son & I met Doug after a Dead Daisies / Kiss show a few years back. He engaged in conversation with my young son who has Autism about how much he was going to enjoy the Kiss show. They spoke for several minutes as I watched on. My son was beaming about meeting his first Rock Star. This guy is a class act and a pro. I could never thank him enough for giving my son that memory.

Awesome read my friend and yeah I've always heard Doug was truly a good guy that really appreciated his fans and wasn't a arrogant egotistical prick like 75% of Rockstars that are .dude has a humbling personality that really goes a long way in how these guys will be remembered .met Randy Rhoads and Rudy Sarso outside of a small venue in Tampa Florida back in Sep 1981 and I was shocked of just how kool this guy was .I was 15 and lived in Orlando Florida and at the last minute decided to drive the 90 miles to go see Ozzy and Def Leppard at the Curtis Hixon Hall in Tampa we went to our local record store that was one of the city spots to buy concert tickets in the Orlando and surrounding areas and got there and found out you could not buy tickets at any 3rd party outlets on the day of the show .only place to get the tickets on show day was at the venue so took the chance that we could get there and grab tickets before they sold out which was a big chance to take cause this Hall was like only 3.000 - 5000 people capacity tops so as we got there we ran up to the ticket window got out tickets and started back to the car to go get something to eat cause it was still 3 hours before the doors opened so on the way we saw a couple of dudes that looked like chicks walking torwards .one long blonde hair and skinny and short as hell the other tall and thin both wearing silk shorts and tank tops with lanyards hanging around their necks with Ozzy credentials and as we got a few steps closer we noticed they were dudes and my buddy recognized Rudy from a Hit Parader magazine he had just looked at on the way to Tampa and then a few other people must have noticed them and stopped them and started talking to them about the same time we walked up one guy yells it's Randy Rhoads and I was like wat ? Cause I had the Blizzard of Ozz album and had seen pictures of Randy but he had always had light brown hair and this dudes was bleach blonde and nobody at that time knew that Tommy Aldridge and Rudy Sarso was even in the band cause on the Blizzard Lp it's Bob D on bass and Lee Kerslake the drummer but anyway we started talking to them they were walking from their motel to due their sound check .well in just a couple minutes there had to be 20 or 25 people that had gathered around and they were in no hurry were glad to sign autographs and Randy had a camera with him and asked if he could take a picture of all of us with them .can you believe that asked us if we would let them take pictures of us with them instead of wat is normally the opposite .but Randy was the nicest guy even shy and quiet like .made my day cause he was and has aways been my favorite guitarist

Ronnie made a massive mistake having his wife who became his ex wife as his manager , she had no interest in the band who were actually creating the songs that went on to the Dio albums , it was the Ronnie show as far as she was concerned and in her head band members were just that , she gave no credit for the fact that they were the ones making the hits Ronnie claimed as his own .

Seems like Dio had an overly sensitive ego. Like it didn't take much to make him react as though he was being made to feel less important than someone else, and that would tick him off. It also seems like Vivian understood this well and would often say things over the years to press Dio's buttons in interviews, etc., even on a commentary I heard on a Def Leppard dvd. Maybe Dio's attitude was justified in some cases, but in this case it doesn't sound like he treated Doug right and probably should have called him later on to apologize (if he didn't).

Dio was veteran alcoholic. He was angry in sober days (concerts). He heavily drank with Geezer during Dehumanizer days when he was 50. Considering his size and the early age of wine consuming, it was very hard for him to stop drinking. It made him grumpy. I don't want to offend small people, but they shouldn't drink alcohol, especially in big doses with big guys.

There couldn't have been that much bad blood, Doug did at least 3 separate stints in Dio, swapping back and forth with Craig Goldy.
I saw Dio on the Master of the Moon tour in '04 at the London Astoria and it was Goldy plating guitar. I then saw them again at the same venue in October '05 for "An Evening With Dio" (which was recorded and released as "Holy Diver Live") and it was Doug on guitar that night as Goldy had injured his hand/wrist.

True, Coverdale might not be the easiest to work either (as it is with 99%of musicians) but it was Sykes who sacked himself in the aftermath of the recordings for 1987, not David.

RJD was the greatest singer in rock/metal and I will always love him, but I've read from a lot of people that he was often a difficult person to deal with and sometimes had a very short fuse. Viv Campbell copped the same "exit" as DA. Dio & Blackmore (another difficult rockstar) separation was very acrimonious. Go read Geezer or Iommi's bio's how the Sabbath stints finished.
Dealing with Ronnie could be a minefield... but what a gift he had as a singer.
