  • As modern airliners have developed, major advancements in speed and range have become harder to achieve. Space companies Virgin Galactic and SpaceX are looking to use rockets to revolutionize the air travel industry and cut flight times massively. This video looks at how these two companies are approaching the idea and which one is more likely to succeed.

The shuttle flew 135 missions, soyuz spacecraft have flown 140, the chinese Shenzhou has had 11 flights, Crew Dragon has had a successful flight, there were the Apollo, Gemini, Mercury, Voskhod, Vostok programs all of which had many successes. So while 1 in 32 astronauts have died in the pursuit of spaceflight, these missions which have carried many passengers mean that a far smaller ratio of passengers have died.

    What do you think of the idea of Virgin Orbit merging or taking over Stratolaunch and its vehicles. Using Talon-A as a experimental airplane to test materials for hypersonic flight. Then eventually licensing or buying Reaction Engines Sabre engines to build a new single stage to orbit space plane? Stratolaunch carrier aircraft plane can be use as a replacement for the 747 or even a larger version of SpaceShipTwo

  • @GuardsmanBass
    @GuardsmanBass 3 роки тому +16

    I can't really see point-to-point suborbital travel taking off as a major means of transportation, versus tourist flights. The sound and safety concerns limit you to essentially trans-oceanic flights (since you have to launch from and land on sea platforms kilometers off the coast), and it's hard to even get supersonic air transport going on such routes because business class nowadays includes stuff like in-flight internet and fully reclining seats (meaning you can time your flights so that you sleep during the duration and be at your destination ready to go in the morning). The need for fast-as-possible air travel isn't really there anymore for the people who would be mostly likely to purchase it (business travelers).

    • @HRG526
      @HRG526 3 роки тому +1

      What you miss however is that the need for sleep is no longer needed as you could adequately rest at your destination or before you embark for your journey, further more things like Internet could still be provided by services such as starlink which uses satellites and thus can be used even in orbit, food and other minor amenities needed on planes wouldn't be needed because trips will be taken in less than an hour, think of it as a space uber if you will. I also believe that once it is cost effective any smart business person would pick faster travel than luxurious travel, and who is to say there won't be luxurious travel with rockets. Technology is ever advancing

      @smashexentertainment676 3 роки тому

      Ironically monorails in Japan are slower than any average train, with top speed 80km/h, but on average 45km/h.
      What you thought probably is Shinkansen - bullet trains, which are 320km/h. The average speed actually depends on how many stops it is making. For example Nozomi is the fastest, since it stops only at a very few major stations, Kodama is the exact same N700 series, but stops at every station, so it takes 3-4 times longer depending on a destination.
      Currently Japan is building 500km/h Maglev from Tokyo to Nagoya to Osaka, but if you build the current N700 track as straight and same 5-6 stops, you win like 20-30 minutes at best. The tickets for the bullet train cost as much as an airplane tickets, the only difference is you skip on customs, waiting at the airport and you arrive conveniently at the very center of the city. Also you can hop off at any station you want.
      I'd love to have those across the Europe, coz it's either flight or bus. And neither are not even close to be as good as Shinkansen.

  • @costrio
    @costrio 3 роки тому +3

    Does anybody really need to get to Europe so fast? Secondly, you still have to travel to a spaceport or airport at either end so add that to the travel time and expense of the commute, IMO.

    While this video was well made I feel as if this is an unfair comparison. Comparing astronaut deaths and aircraft deaths is not fair or reasonable. Also, this title is a bit misleading. Virgin Galactic and SpaceX have very different goals. While both are pursuing point to point transport, their main goals are not point to point transport. SpaceX is persuing interplanetary travel and Virgin Galactic is persuing suborbital space tourism. Their spacecraft are designed for different uses and cannot be compared. Starship is on a whole other level than SpaceShipTwo.

    One cannot compare them in this way, as SpaceX and Virgin Galactic are in two completely different markets. Musk is firmly adhered to the Federal government and NASA; while Sir Richard recently partnered VG with Rolls Royce to develop a new hybrid jet engine. My guess is VG is working on expanding their commercial presence with a new Concorde. If you know Sir Richard, you know that's exactly the kind of luxury venture he would be involved with.

      Virgin Orbit/Virgin Galactic are actually on a different technological path to Space. One that I believe will eventually get them involve with Reaction Engines an their Sabre rockets by the 2030s. An one I believe could make them leap ahead of Space X in the longer term, in 20 years.
      Especially if they continue to build their alliance with Rolls Royce and nuclear propulsion. An I do think Branson intend to set up and do a lot of development work in the UK in the longer term. US to crowded he can make a bigger name for himself in space in the UK.

    Thank you for bringing up some of the issues. No one really talks about the severe weather restrictions for launch and landing as well as the hour+ boat ride on each end of the journey. Personally, I highly doubt regularly occurring passenger starship travel point to point will ever be a reality, there are too many logistical issues with weather, hardware issues resulting in scrubs. Efficient airplanes will be with us for many years to come.

    Why changed the title from "Could Virgin Galactic Beat SpaceX" to "Could Space Travel Replace Air Travel"? Just curious.

    Virgin Galactic: uses a glorified airplane.
    SpaceX: uses a long cylinder that becomes stiff when it's pressurized.
    I think it's obvious why one of them is still a virgin...

    The lines about jetlag are straight up speculative and not backed by anything.
    "Likely to intensify jetlag" yeah says who exactly? Feels like you just wrote this from your head

    Honestly I can't see how the Starship in it's current design can come anywhere near being a threat to regular air travel. Firstly rockets for the time being are FAR more unsafe than aircraft, but that will likely improve once the technology is perfected (as with the early days of aviation) but that also means we will likely see accidents that could result in the complete loss of the passengers and ship. And when rockets go wrong, the go WRONG. They're basically bombs that exploded slow enough to propel you upwards. This is why any spaceport will be VERY far from any nearby inhabited areas, which will make getting to a spaceport as inconvenient as getting to a major airport far from a city. You also need to consider the noise being generated by a launch. No one in their right mind will want to live near a spaceport with multiple launches a day. As a matter of fact, because planes are getting SO quiet, airports are actually moving CLOSER to cities, or entire new cities are being built around new airports.
    -
    Weather is also a BIG issue when it comes to rockets. Planes are FAR more tolerant when it comes to flying in poor weather than rockets, and planes have the option to divert to a multitude of aiports if anything goes wrong, be it weather related or mechanically related. At the start of spaceplane travel, there won't be many places a spaceplane could divert too, and we will likely never see as many spaceports as there air airports once the technology matures.
    -
    Then comes fueling. It takes a LONG time to fuel up a rocket, and if for any reason a launch is delayed or cancelled (say poor weather at the destination), de-fueling the rocket is a risky, albeit normal procedure that will take a long time to complete too. During that period of time the passengers will be stuck inside the flying bomb waiting for it to be emptied before leaving, so it kind of isn't any better than waiting at a tarmac for takeoff clearance.

      good points, elon is looking to build the launch barges ~20 miles out to sea which isnt to far, and with it being in the ocean they can use huge deluge systems for sound and shock dampening, weather on the other hand isnt as big a problem for starship, when fully fuelled the rocket is extremely heavy and and will have huge amounts of thrust the weather wont effect it as much as other rockets. as for fuelling they are working on it as we speak, they can load, detank, recycle and load again in about an hour and a half on SN6 which is much quicker than it was before on SN4 at about 2 and a half hours. but only time will tell what happens in the future.
