I don't know why this is always an issue. The costumes are like that to draw more people to the theatre. Why an issue with the girl in jumanji but always showing of the Rock's chest, no word. They wanted to be in those movies and knew what they were going to wear some liked the costumes. Its just movies.
'Tis an oldy but I always found the Purple wigs & miniskirts of "UFO" (TV series) to be silly. There's also "Barbarella", "Zardoz" & Farrah Fawcett's outfits in "Saturn 3"

Everytime someone brings up Ripley stripping down to her underware at the end of Alien, I have to point out that she did so as she was about to enter the cryosleep pod (think the ailen had been trapped onboard the now destroyed mothership). Obviously the people complaining about it had not been paying attention to the first 5 minutes of the movie when the crew crawled OUT of the cryosleep pods and they were ALL dressed in underwear. As for the cut of her panties, sorry guys, when the movie was made hip-hugger bikinis were the most commonly worn panties by young woman. If it was made today, she'd probaby be wearing a thong.
Well said. I was 24 when we saw Alien in the theater, a bunch of knuckle dragging guys in 1979. Not one of us flinched at the sight of a woman kicking ass or what Ripley was wearing. How is this even a thing? The monster is about to tear you a new one so you ask for time to get into your grandma panties? Look at Star Trek's The Cloud Minders and tell me which outfit is more demeaning and ridiculous.

It was definitely part of the plot but could have done without as much plumber"s butt on camera... Actually, one of the first R-rated movies I ever showed my son was Terminator. After the movie I pointed out to him that yes, they could have showed less in the hotel room but that it was crucial to the plot that she had Reese's baby or the movie didn't even make sense (even if it does create a typical time line paradox).

Sorry but I'm still of the opinion that her panties were just unnecessarily skimpy. I'm pretty sure I was still just a kid when I saw this (despite the rating) and even back then that stood out to me. And not in a good way. It seemed like such a cheap shot that it actually took me out of the film and broke immersion for me.

Im really betting the reviewer got triggered with women and men looking sexy. there are PLENTY of other costumes I can think of that that did fit the role of the character Look at how badly they botched Cowboy Bebobs female star. I've always taken Ripley's underwear scene to demonstrate how vulnerable her human body is to the armor covered Alien...that's all. There are always going to be people who read too much into things. The nipples on the bat suit were the worst thing in that movie, after the entire rest of the movie. It didn't kill the Batman franchise, but it put it into a coma for a decade.
But of course, despite the fact that it is comic-book canon, the 2nd worst part of the batsuit was Batgirl's heels and having her running in them. That's a broken ankle waiting in the wings.

Leia's costume was right. She was captured as a prisoner, a slave is right around the corner. I remember the Columbine thing very well, since I was grown with a child at the time. The killers themselves were referred to as the trenchcoat mafia by others in the school well before the Matrix movie came out. Those turds walked around the school in trenchcoats like they were marching in formation, making "military turns" at the corners. That earned them their nickname. No one at the time thought The Matrix inspired their choice of clothes. Media being what it is, they naturally DID compare the two, asking whether glorified violence in movies like the Matrix was inspiring violence.

As for running in heels, there’s a hilarious X-Files episode in which Tea Leone asks the Scully character to demonstrate how she manages to run in heels. While Mulder is questioning Gary Shandling, in the background Scully is running back and forth while Leone is on her phone and doing anything but paying attention.
Exactly "Romancing the Stone" is what came to mind with those heels. Although she was cute running in the shoes, and was an intriguing was to introduce an non jump scare, more of a fall down scare.

What no mention of 7 of 9's cat suit from Voyager? It was so controversial that it caused a rift between Jeri Ryan and Kate Mulgrew during the filming of Voyager. It was 7 of 9 who saved that series from being a short-lived series.
You can complain all you want about the fourth Batman movie, but it gave us Alicia Silverstone as Batgirl who was smarter than both boys. Robin complained that the computer screen was upside down and her Research Librarian skills fixed it with a single keystroke. My wife was a Research Librarian in RL and computers and The Internet were no match for her. Batgirl was the only comic she read as a girl because Barbara Gordon was a Research Librarian in her non-costumed life. When she learned about her new persona Oracle, she got very excited.
yeah the biggest shame they buried both Batgirl as a character and Alicia's career with it, she doesn't have a lot of good roles, Clueless is brilliant and Blast from the Past was okay, recently she was real good in Reptile with Benicio Del Toro though!
Weaver's underwear scene is actually symbolic. In early SF movies, scantily clad women were menaced by monsters. And usually didn't end well. This history triggers a gut reaction to the Alien scene with Weaver in her underwear. I remember thinking: "No, no, you can't kill her after all this. She's done so well. The only stupid thing she did was go after the cat ... and that was kind of endearing. You have to remember that having the woman survive was a relatively rare idea SF movies. (More common in books.) So her panties were a real red-herring for true SF movie fans.

This is an absurd premise. Before Harley Quinn, Leia's Bikini was the most popular female cosplay costume at every CON. Apparently, the majority of women liked it. Even Carrie Fisher said that it was not a problem as far as she was concerned because "Jabba forced me to wear a metal bikini so I killed him." Sci-Fi / Fantasy characters are supposed to be attractive or even aspirational. I noticed this video has no problem with the skimpy MALE armor costumes in movies like Thor or 300. Very Interesting.
If you are considering ToS Starfleet mini-dresses, at the time they were seen as a step forward in women's lib. Nichelle Nichols spoke about how they viewed it in an interview. It's interesting how what was viewed by the people of the time as a great step forward, is viewed so differently by many people now who didn't live through the restrictions those people had.

Until my recent retirement I worked for a man who owns a small chain of independent movie theatres. During the Aquaman run, I happened to stop by his flagship theatre where there was a bus-stop-sized Aquaman poster on the wall directly opposite concession. The image featured a life-size, full-length shot of a glistening Jason Momoa in full getup, rippling muscles and all. Seems the owner's wife had dibs on the poster once the movie had finished its run. Not sure which room in their house that thing is hanging now, but I'm hoping for the sake of their marriage it isn't in the master bedroom.

A comment about the trenchcoat and Columbine... The Punisher as well as the Executioner wore such coats. The Undertaker and Edge wore long trenchcoats on the way to the ring.

Neah, bullshit. First: half of the ancient world was fighting nude or in minimal cloth. Also, look at how much cloths the guys in 300 had, and how hard they had to work to look good on screen. Second: many of these examples are highly stylized and/or a parody. 5th element? seriously?
Sigourney Weaver was in Galaxy Quest as well, and the character she played was the eye candy-only type. She was doing the role as a mocking of the oversexualized perception of women in sci-fi films and TV. They did the same thing on Stargate SG-1. Finding that balance between serious and mocking isn't always easy. And let's be honest, how conservatively are the Omaticaya people in Avatar or the Lakotah people in Dances with Wolves dressed? It isn't always exploitative. Sometimes the covering up of the body is more exploitative. Think of the miniseries Dune.
Laredo, "You know, that is really getting annoying!" Gwen, "Look, I have one job on this lousy ship. It’s stupid, but I’m going to do it, okay?" That movie was a fantasic parody of the TV & movies of the previous time, and the current fandoms. Watching the con scenes a friend who frequented them was saying, "I know that guy, and that one. And that one, and...", because he had met people at cons who matched all those archetypes.
@NemoConsequentae I have been to conventions and seen all the archetypes before as well. And they nailed it. That movie didn't just have top-tier casting, it had wonderful leadership in their production design, cinematography, direction, and basically up and down the crew as well. It may have been the best made comedy film of all time.

@fredhughes4115 I agree. I am a huge "Airplane!" fan, but "Galaxy Quest" is so much more. There is more meat on the bones for the actors to chew on. Sam Rockwell gave what may be his most stellar performance as Guy, the wannabe from episode "fill in the blank." Tony Shaloub was exactly what you needed him to be. He was hammy without being too over the top while playing over the top material. That is what makes this a hard thing to perform. They need to take over the top material and play it over the top in such a way that they appear to be over the top as a performance without going entirely off the rails. This farce within a seriously acted performance within a parody within a farce is extremely difficult to pull off successfully, but the cast, up and down its entirety, were spectacular in this. Even such lesser characters like Missi Pyle's were extraordinary. And Colantoni simply hit it right out of the stadium. He didn't just clear the fence. He cleared the stadium complex completely. This was so well done that it is on my monthly view list. Few movies are the perfection for their type. "Chicago" is the perfect musical. "Les Miserables" is close but clearly second. For procedural TV House and Castle are neck and neck. For science fiction and fantasy, there are Harry Potter and Hunger Games in deadlock. For rom-com-tv, you have Gilmore Girls. For sitcoms, you have MASH. Dramedy gives us the West Wing. What you will notice is that each of these has one trait in common. They are all written intelligently and do not presume the viewer is an idiot. They treat us as valued equals and write up to our potential rather than down to the lowest common denominator. When John C. Reilly starts doing "Mister Celophane" or Queen Latifah does "When You're Good To Mama" or the cast on murders row does "Cell Block Tango/He Had It Coming" I get chills down my spine. Each of the shows and movies I listed has moments and elements that do this to us. That is what makes them great. Galaxy Quest is the best parody because it successfully manages to do this. Oddly, Zathura also meets the standard, though not as well. Why I say Oddly is one of the brothers is played, interestingly, by none other than Josh Hutcherson. And we are back to Hunger Games taking over the world again.

Karen Gillian's outfit was simply because they were video Game characters. This was even discussed in the movie by the characters! It wouldn't have made any sense what-so-ever for her to be wearing anything else. It wasn't even very revealing - how did it make this list?!?
Leia's bikini made sense... she was captured by a known prolific slaver, why wouldn't he put her in something skimpy? It would actually be surprising that it wasn't worse... Only reason I can come up with the design change that makes sense is if putting metal plates there impacted their flexibility enough to make combat more dangerous for them, due to some change in who (or how) they fought. I didn't watch the new Jumanji movies, but from the moment I saw the trailer I figured being in a game character's role was a pretty obvious reason for this. I ignored Leeloo's bandages, I figured it was a sci-fi equivalent to a hospital gown. High heels is a stupid choice of footwear in ANY kind of nature preserve, it's a good way to get sprained or broken ankles (especially if you have to run in them). In that scene she was supposedly sprinting full-out, I can't see that ending well in ANY way. I couldn't care less about the Alien scene controversy either way. I highly doubt choice in fashion on The Matrix spurred the shooting, all too often this kind of thing is also blamed on video games, music, etc... The whole nipple thing on the batsuits just seems stupid to me. I can see the whole costume paint for Mystique being a real pain, but it's not like other stars haven't had to deal with that kind of thing... just ask Michael Dorn. Maybe the studio could've come up with a better-looking compromise, or possibly use some CGI to help it along, but who knows? And finally I couldn't care less about the controversy either way about Valerian.

What? No mention of Jenny Agutter's miniskirt in Logan's Run? That skirt was the most impressive special effect in the movie. As the movie progressed, the skirt kept tearing and getting shorter and shorter while still remaining tastefully attached to her body.
Historically there have been many examples of warriors fighting in the nude to say nothing of the Olympic Games. So quibbling of costumes being a little more skimpy or high heels seems silly. Simple solution, go nude!!!

A fairly fierce warrior woman that was ignored here was Deeja Thoris of the "John Carter" film. Deeja, as a Martian ('scuse me... Barsoomian) would have gone stark naked. The red Martians were "clothing optional" most of the time, if you read the original books.
There's Mathilda May's 'space vampire' non-costume in Lifeforce (based upon Christopher Priest's 'The Space Vampires), which while it had some make-up demands and required people with warm clothes to follow her around, (shooting in England at night can be cold as hell), was not even slightly controversial at the time. She appeared in the film magazines back in the 1980s without a peep from anybody Mayhap they were scared? The space vampires could appear as whom and how they liked, I mean she was Patrick Stewart at least some of the time. - no similar nakedity for the other two male vampires, who, by the way, barely get a line and hardly seen compared to the amazing Mathilda.
Jurassic Heels-This reminds me of a scene from the film "Romancing The Stone," where Michael Douglas' character chops off the heels of Kathleen Turner's shoes. She declares "They were French!" To which he responds, "Now they're practical."

Ah, leia's original costume did not include a bra or anything else under that robe. Patty Jenkin's Wonder Woman, has her wearing sprain and ankle guaranteeing wedges because Jenkins likes the way it makes her leg look. The stunt double and all of the Amazons on the beach all wore low heeled boots.
I can actually see the justification with Wonder Woman because you don't want to see the second-most powerful member of the league getting dwarfed by the other character. The wedges were less distracting than heels and bumped her height a bit.

Jurassic Heels are the best thing on the new Jurassic Park movies. There are races on heels so it's possible, it's a skill and also nuanced. The bad writing and the agenda driven story are the real problem.
In aliens, it made sense in that being in a ship for so long in such close proximity with each other, with such little privacy that crew would be used to seeing each other in little or no clothing and that stripping down after being in space suits in front of other crew is normal and becomes just a natural thing. Ripley was just doing what she had done a thousand times before without thought. Regardless of what crew and cast said, it makes sense she was relaxing, getting ready to go into cryosleep dressed like that.
Ripley in the underwear showed her at her most vulnerable. It made sense to the plot and the emotion of the scene. Going back on it now just seems like a stupid woke backlash by cowards.
For BDH in Jurassic World, they couldve borrowed from Romancing the Stone and had him (or her) chop the heels off her shoes so she could still wear something on her feet. "Those were Italian." "Now they're practical."

Cara's outfit in Valerian is fine, and so was the movie. It was fun. I just watched her effort in Carnival Row abd it was fantastic. I recommend the series.

You completely ignore the reason for the costume. Leia's was right because she was a captured slave being humilated by a slaver. Nipples on batman was wrong because his armor is to intimidate hardened criminals not give them something to make jokes about when fighting. Gillian was playing a VIDEO GAME character! Of course her outfit was skimmpy. That was the point made verbally in the film. Weaver's strip down was right because she was preparing to enter cold sleep for the trip back to earth. And sorry Mystic but talk to Hellboy about hours in the chair getting made up. These are actors, don't like the costume dont do the role.
annoying thing for me ~ i had a coat like Neo's for four years before the movie came out, it got positive reactions but nothing too much. i wore it all the time. The the Matrix comes out and loads of people, including some who had been with me when I bought the damn thing started saying I had got myself a Matrix coat. How the hell was I suddenly wearing a Matrix coat according to people i'd hung out and been at work with whilst wearing it. it was also battered. it didnt look pristine and smooth like Neo's it looked like it had been dragged behind a truck. i loved it, it was cool but it was skuffed up. I only agree with costumes/armor suits for battle, but the androgynous thing, no. The painted suit story is also annoying... let's complain about everything made you cool, famous and successful now. It's very popular among women. But Thor Love and Thunder or any other movie with men showing some skin? No problemo.

Everytime someone brings up Ripley stripping down to her underware at the end of Alien, I have to point out that she did so as she was about to enter the cryosleep pod (think the ailen had been trapped onboard the now destroyed mothership). Obviously the people complaining about it had not been paying attention to the first 5 minutes of the movie when the crew crawled OUT of the cryosleep pods and they were ALL dressed in underwear. As for the cut of her panties, sorry guys, when the movie was made hip-hugger bikinis were the most commonly worn panties by young woman. If it was made today, she'd probaby be wearing a thong.
Well said. I was 24 when we saw Alien in the theater, a bunch of knuckle dragging guys in 1979. Not one of us flinched at the sight of a woman kicking ass or what Ripley was wearing. How is this even a thing? The monster is about to tear you a new one so you ask for time to get into your grandma panties? It was definitely part of the plot but could have done without as much plumber"s butt on camera... Actually, one of the first R-rated movies I ever showed my son was Terminator. After the movie I pointed out to him that yes, they could have showed less in the hotel room but that it was crucial to the plot that she had Reese's baby or the movie didn't even make sense (even if it does create a typical time line paradox).

Sorry but I'm still of the opinion that her panties were just unnecessarily skimpy. I'm pretty sure I was still just a kid when I saw this (despite the rating) and even back then that stood out to me. And not in a good way. It seemed like such a cheap shot that it actually took me out of the film and broke immersion for me.

Im really betting the reviewer got triggered with women and men looking sexy. there are PLENTY of other costumes I can think of that that did fit the role of the character Look at how badly they botched Cowboy Bebobs female star. The nipples on the bat suit were the worst thing in that movie, after the entire rest of the movie. It didn't kill the Batman franchise, but it put it into a coma for a decade.

Ornella Muti as Princess Aura wore the costume a few years earlier. It's a Mata Hari costume that ended up in Flash Gordon and so it probably had to end in Star Wars.

Among the most memorable costumes worn in a sci-fi movie was Mathilda May's costume worn in Tobe Hooper's 1985 film Lifeforce. It required no time to make, and cost nothing as well. Impossible to forget.

Media being what it is, they naturally DID compare the two, asking whether glorified violence in movies like the Matrix was inspiring violence.

You can complain all you want about the fourth Batman movie, but it gave us Alicia Silverstone as Batgirl who was smarter than both boys. Robin complained that the computer screen was upside down and her Research Librarian skills fixed it with a single keystroke. My wife was a Research Librarian in RL and computers and The Internet were no match for her. Batgirl was the only comic she read as a girl because Barbara Gordon was a Research Librarian in her non-costumed life. When she learned about her new persona Oracle, she got very excited.

Weaver's underwear scene is actually symbolic. In early SF movies, scantily clad women were menaced by monsters. And usually didn't end well. This history triggers a gut reaction to the Alien scene with Weaver in her underwear. I remember thinking: "No, no, you can't kill her after all this. She's done so well. The only stupid thing she did was go after the cat ... and that was kind of endearing. You have to remember that having the woman survive was a relatively rare idea SF movies. (More common in books.) So her panties were a real red-herring for true SF movie fans.

Until my recent retirement I worked for a man who owns a small chain of independent movie theatres. During the Aquaman run, I happened to stop by his flagship theatre where there was a bus-stop-sized Aquaman poster on the wall directly opposite concession. The image featured a life-size, full-length shot of a glistening Jason Momoa in full getup, rippling muscles and all. Seems the owner's wife had dibs on the poster once the movie had finished its run. Not sure which room in their house that thing is hanging now, but I'm hoping for the sake of their marriage it isn't in the master bedroom.

Sigourney Weaver was in Galaxy Quest as well, and the character she played was the eye candy-only type. She was doing the role as a mocking of the oversexualized perception of women in sci-fi films and TV. They did the same thing on Stargate SG-1. Finding that balance between serious and mocking isn't always easy. And let's be honest, how conservatively are the Omaticaya people in Avatar or the Lakotah people in Dances with Wolves dressed? It isn't always exploitative. Sometimes the covering up of the body is more exploitative. Think of the miniseries Dune.

That movie was a fantasic parody of the TV & movies of the previous time, and the current fandoms. Watching the con scenes a friend who frequented them was saying, "I know that guy, and that one. And that one, and...", because he had met people at cons who matched all those archetypes.

That movie didn't just have top-tier casting, it had wonderful leadership in their production design, cinematography, direction, and basically up and down the crew as well. It may have been the best made comedy film of all time.

@fredhughes4115 I agree. I am a huge "Airplane!" fan, but "Galaxy Quest" is so much more. There is more meat on the bones for the actors to chew on. Sam Rockwell gave what may be his most stellar performance as Guy, the wannabe from episode "fill in the blank." Tony Shaloub was exactly what you needed him to be. He was hammy without being too over the top while playing over the top material. That is what makes this a hard thing to perform. They need to take over the top material and play it over the top in such a way that they appear to be over the top as a performance without going entirely off the rails. This farce within a seriously acted performance within a parody within a farce is extremely difficult to pull off successfully, but the cast, up and down its entirety, were spectacular in this. Even such lesser characters like Missi Pyle's were extraordinary. And Colantoni simply hit it right out of the stadium. He didn't just clear the fence. He cleared the stadium complex completely. This was so well done that it is on my monthly view list. Few movies are the perfection for their type. "Chicago" is the perfect musical. "Les Miserables" is close but clearly second. For procedural TV House and Castle are neck and neck. For science fiction and fantasy, there are Harry Potter and Hunger Games in deadlock. For rom-com-tv, you have Gilmore Girls. For sitcoms, you have MASH. Dramedy gives us the West Wing. What you will notice is that each of these has one trait in common. They are all written intelligently and do not presume the viewer is an idiot. They treat us as valued equals and write up to our potential rather than down to the lowest common denominator. When John C. Reilly starts doing "Mister Celophane" or Queen Latifah does "When You're Good To Mama" or the cast on murders row does "Cell Block Tango/He Had It Coming" I get chills down my spine. Each of the shows and movies I listed has moments and elements that do this to us. That is what makes them great. Galaxy Quest is the best parody because it successfully manages to do this. Oddly, Zathura also meets the standard, though not as well. Why I say Oddly is one of the brothers is played, interestingly, by none other than Josh Hutcherson. And we are back to Hunger Games taking over the world again.

Karen Gillian's outfit was simply because they were video Game characters. This was even discussed in the movie by the characters! It wouldn't have made any sense what-so-ever for her to be wearing anything else. It wasn't even very revealing - how did it make this list?!?

I didn't watch the new Jumanji movies, but from the moment I saw the trailer I figured being in a game character's role was a pretty obvious reason for this.

Jurassic Heels are the best thing on the new Jurassic Park movies. There are races on heels so it's possible, it's a skill and also nuanced. The bad writing and the agenda driven story are the real problem.
That's one of those complaints where I can immediately tell that the person complaining is a couch potato.

In aliens, it made sense in that being in a ship for so long in such close proximity with each other, with such little privacy that crew would be used to seeing each other in little or no clothing and that stripping down after being in space suits in front of other crew is normal and becomes just a natural thing. Ripley was just doing what she had done a thousand times before without thought. Regardless of what crew and cast said, it makes sense she was relaxing, getting ready to go into cryosleep dressed like that.
Ripley in the underwear showed her at her most vulnerable. It made sense to the plot and the emotion of the scene. Going back on it now just seems like a stupid woke backlash by cowards.

Cara's outfit in Valerian is fine, and so was the movie. It was fun. I just watched her effort in Carnival Row abd it was fantastic. I recommend the series.

Keep in mind that the average speed for a T-rex according to recent studies is around 4 to 5 mph, meaning that Rexy was just taking a brisk walk, which for Claire meant running in order to keep distance

Though that specific T.rex was clocked at being able to run 32mph (see Jurassic Park scene when Hammond tells Grant they have a T.rex) so it could catch up to Claire if it tried. My point it that is wasn't trying. There is more to animal behaviour than insta-kill.

So for Rexy seeing a flare outside of usual time and location must have puzzled her enough to make her simply follow it. My comment was simply a way of saying that for Claire that was a run for her life, for Rexy it was just a brisk jog a la "hey wait where you going" (average speed as in average WALKING speed, they were supposedly capble of running up to 10-11 mph according to recent studies, and Rexy when she was a juvenile during JP1 was able to run after a speeding Wrangler)

You completely ignore the reason for the costume. Leia's was right because she was a captured slave being humilated by a slaver. Nipples on batman was wrong because his armor is to intimidate hardened criminals not give them something to make jokes about when fighting. Gillian was playing a VIDEO GAME character! Of course her outfit was skimmpy. That was the point made verbally in the film. Weaver's strip down was right because she was preparing to enter cold sleep for the trip back to earth. And sorry Mystic but talk to Hellboy about hours in the chair getting made up. These are actors, don't like the costume dont do the role.
annoying thing for me ~ i had a coat like Neo's for four years before the movie came out, it got positive reactions but nothing too much. i wore it all the time. The the Matrix comes out and loads of people, including some who had been with me when I bought the damn thing started saying I had got myself a Matrix coat.
