Not all people are, and will be, fully competent in technology. They did not create this issue-the timestamps coded inside the meter expire every 34 years and 11 months. The chips are designed that way at the factory. Even if your meter was installed last year, the chip inside, for encryption purposes, is coded with a timestamp that starts somewhere around 1993. It works similarly to a TSM chip. After approximately 18 million minutes, the counter resets to 0, rendering your new tokens duplicates or invalid. This happens because the system recognizes the timestamp as being from the past.
The coding token was auto generated at any point when u do electricity purchase so instead of blaming Eskom, at this it's a sign that high numbers are not buying electricity

I’m actually considering the “zero buyers” which the government has known for many years that they exist and they know why they exist- people don’t have money and electricity is expensive. The government knew that so many people would have this problem, they could’ve used the same media they use to push other agendas to also communicate this issue better. Municipalities could’ve gotten involved, counsellors, etc. I therefore maintain that the communication was poor and they could’ve been proactive.

All customers who were buying recharge tokens were automatically issued the upgrade tokens along with the recharge token a few months ago; even those who were buying from supermarkets and banks. The only ones who are complaining now are those who were effectively stealing electricity.
