  • 5 of us built a Zenith CH-650 low wing, light sport, 2-place airplane. Started July 2015, finished April 2017. Ready for FAA inspection, then having a professional factory test pilot do first flights, then fly without passengers and over unpopulated areas for 40 hrs. Then can take pax and fly anywhere. Going to AirVenture in Oshkosh July 2017.

About $14K. With cowl, mount, firewall forward was about $22K. Rotax was most expensive option and we considered about 5 different engines and decided Rotax is most reliable and worth the cost. A good 2nd place is O-200, but is heavier and needs critical baffling for cooling. Rotax is liquid cooled and never had an issue. Now 150+ hrs, flew to WA to OSH and back in 2017. Also considered Viking, Corvair, and UL. We have all Zenith and Dynon options. Long range fuel tanks, wing baggage compartments, auto-pilot, and more.
