Ladders can't replace inclines in most cases, especially when it comes to easily traversing the levels of your island. However, I do think that ladders are very underutilized and can be used in creative ways. Especially if you have a lot of areas that includes terraforming and you don't want to take up a whole bunch of space with inclines. (Also I love the castle area on your island!)

I honestly just used inclines for the area where my villagers houses are, and just a way to get to the back of my island. Then the kits for alt ways to get to the 2nd level. (Also the back of the island) If anyone has tips about island decoration or how to decorate the outside area around a villager's house I'd much appreciate it.
I just make a garden that matches their house =) like legit wrap flowers around their house. I also like to add like a bench or birdbath, just a little yard ornament. kind of an old habit from new leaf/wild world
I went to a dream island, and they had two houses and between them a garden of specific colored flowers. Among the flowers are the pictures of the villagers living there, each matching the flower color. It just looked really nice and organized.
Use vines and stairs is really good, and i think thats make a lot of ideas BUT..the little problem for use only vines and stairs is.... the villagers cant use this both
Nah lol, maybe if you're SUPER broke and absolutely can't afford them, but inclines can definitely look nice, can be a great design focal point, and are more convenient. The idea of an island with only vines or ladders to get from level to level sounds extremely frustrating. Plus villagers can't use them either. If someone would rather use ladders for everything that's their prerogative but I would absolutely not say you should use them over inclines in most cases, or to stop using inclines period. I just use a combination of both, with ladders and vines for smaller ares I'd normally use the portable ladder for. Vines make nice decorations too.
I will still use inclines because I think they are pretty, and for smaller stuff, I use vines. The point is, just use both. The title makes it seem like inclines are bad and that they shouldn't be used at all. A much better title is "Good, affordable alternatives for inclines"; that way, people don't feel any negative feelings towards inclines.
I use ladders when I’m building so I don’t have to keep getting my ladder out over and over but I use inclines to make my island look better and villagers can use them
I have the maximum inclines and have "sunken areas" and terraced villager neighborhoods. I make sure they can access areas around my island. I also use ladders and vines to make it easy for me to get to places and also to add visual interest to cliffs.
At the moment, I'm 100% flat for my swamp but before I used the vines for most of my island. I do like to see my villagers wandering so I add inclines in the neighborhood. For bridges, I just terraform hopping pads. I think it just depends on your islands theme, I love natural islands so these work best for me.
Objectively, i would say inclines are better used if you want *your villagers* to be able to get up the highest part of your island. If its for yourself, like for example you wanna build your own little private space on the island where noone would be able to come bother you, i would say yea vines/ladders are good enough. Apart from that, two things i hate bout inclines is that you cant move them easily like if you have the misfortune to *accidently* put them too far or the side of where you wanted it and realized too late, and also you cant even change their design AFTER they got built (like if you first pick a rocky design but later want to change for a wooden one, or somethin). On a side note, i also hate how we have subtitute for inclines with the ladders/vines but not any for the freakin *bridges* ! Why can we have at least a plank or somethin we could put down and pick up to serve as a bridge when and where ever we want ?! (And no, the *rod* is not a bridge substitute. Its a TOOL. a boring dull annoying tool we always have to carry around to go across 3 spaces of water !!)
The villagers can only use the inclines, though. When I was in the construction phase of my island and using only vines, my villagers would be stuck on levels and unable to move to other levels. I felt bad so I ended up putting in a couple temporary inclines so they could move around more freely
I have put a few ladders and vines in places where inclines won’t fit and where I have noticed that I or my kids frequently use a ladder. We have kept inclines to a minimum because they take up space.
I've been debating moving some of my villager houses around to out them on a second tier and now I've watched this, you've just inspired me to go ahead with it! I may go rob a load of vines from Kappns islands!
The only thing I don't like about vines/ladders is that villagers can't use them, so to make the entire island accessible to them and prevent them from getting stuck somewhere on a cliff until you restart the game, I prefer inclines. But vines and ladders are really nice for the little cliffs that aren't part of the main flow of the island, like cliffs that are just for decorative purposes but CJ, Celeste and/or Wisp might spawn up there, for example, or a fossil, or you want to use a certain cliff just for a nice view but it's otherwise a dead end, a permanent ladder is really nice. I always keep a stack of vines in my inventory for when I want to take a shortcut, too, or when terraforming as it's easier than constantly grabbing- and putting away your ladder, especially since they stack!
The best thing about the vines and ladder set up kit is that you don't have to put the tool you're carrying away to use it. You can keep carrying the shovel or net while climbing. I'm also a fan of how much space the vines save.
The Ladder Set-Up Kit is one of TWO items that didn't quite work out for me when I came across them in the 2.0 Upgrade. One of my first thoughts when seeing the Ladder Set-Up Kit was "Sweet! now I don't need to pull out my ladder every time Redd is on the northern beach!" But that... just didn't work for some reason. The nearest spot to the beach where I WAS able to place the LSK was so out of the way, that it was just faster to use my own ladder instead anyway. The other item which I got with high hopes but ended up not using? The ABD Machine. Again, one of my first thoughts was "Sweet! maybe I can put this near the Airport so that I don't need to run as far for cash when I see something on Harv's Island that I want!" And then... Harv went and built one for me ON his island the next day (I also was hoping that I could decorate Harv's commerce area, or at least do the weeding for him, but alas...).
I use the inclines for main routes and the vines for my shortcuts and secret paths.I like to see my villagers wonder around the spaces I create and until they can use the ladders as well, inclines are the way to get them to do that.
Bob's gang! I use both. I'm in the process of completely redoing my island. I'm making a castle area that flows into a forest. So inclines for the "city" area and I'll be using the vines for the forest area. But I do like the vines and ladders as they're easier to relocate.
I'm sure it comes down to the accessibility for Main Paths and animal VILLAGERS. We all talk about how they're cheap, convenient and all that, but animals will never learn to use one and will feel imprisoned. I do agree with you that while LSK's are awesome but really comes down to the island build and accessibility. Especially for your residents. So to say don't have any Inclines is like "Phht, Just use a Ladder like I do Bob. You don't need to shop anyway."
I carry vines instead of ladder. I only have 4 inclines. In my dig area I have permanent ladder, and one that leads from my yard down to the garage. Best thing about the ladders and vines is that you can carry your shovel and go up or down them. The vines are great when you are doing cliff construction.
I build aesthetically, so it's not like ease of moving about is my priority. For now i use the vines to get around because i haven't done much with my island yet and they're free and i can put them anywhere, but my goal is to make an aesthetic island so they're not going to be there forever, i'll use whatever fits the vibe. I know i'll use allot of inclines since i want a towny feeling with canals and walkways, but in my more foresty section where my earthy characters will live the vines will be perfect, but not for navigation, i just want the over grown look, and some areas might have the ladders.
I actually never got to fully funding even one incline in my island. It just made me *way* too anxious that if I wanted to change something, I might have to reshape the cliff or move it entirely, and thus have to reposition the incline and spend more bells on it again >< Ultimately I made the decision to do my entire island on tier 1 and not use cliffs at all in my town design, and I've been a lot happier with navigation since. But I love ladders and am a little sad I have no use for them! I actually didn't realize how customizable they were until watching this video, either, so that's extra cool. BobsGang!
Do ladders eliminate some uses for inclines? Sure, maybe some areas just aren't designed for massive inclines, but I wouldn't say it's enough to say that incline are irrelevant. Not only do villagers not use ladders, but inclines just look better in some areas. Have you seen some of the museums on peoples island with a bunch of stairs? They look awesome but they'd probably look a bit odd if they used ladders or vines or something. Some areas just look better with inclines, you know? You bring up the point that inclines don't go with some island aesthetics which such as city core which, sure, I can understand, only that you shown that ladders aren't much better in your own video (3:03). None of the customization options for the latter really fit the citycore theme unless you're using them for like a construction site or something. I'd say the stone staircase looks better in about 90% of cases on a citycore island.
My island is boxed in with waterfall walls so I have vines and ladders to reach the walkways behind the walls. You just need to know the vines exist as a few you can't see but they do still work and that is cool.
Thank you for another excellent and informative video. I too purloin each and every vine & glowing moss from the HH island or Kappin islands when I visit. Take them all they’ll grow back no one will miss them.
We don't use them for navigational purposes only though, we use them for asthetic reasons. Not to mention villagers can't use ladders or hop for that matter. I had a villager stuck in her yard for days and days once. I figured she'd teleport but apparently some of them don't teleport often. So I will continue to use inclines in addition to inclines, ladders and vines.
Personally, I also love the ladder set up kits. I just crafted a bunch of them one day and stuck them all over my island, along the way I usually navigate my whole island when I’m doing my daily stuff. It’s super convenient. Vines I don’t use like, at all, but I do like seeing them on islands when I visit. But yeah I love me some of those ladder kits lol.
I concur, I really feel that we should be using the latter Saint kits more as well as the vines. They’re beautiful way to design your island, they don’t take up as much space. However, if you don’t like me who designed there hell with the inclines in mind, it can be a bit difficult to change it to a ladder once you get the inclines in place. I did use ladders until the inclines were built.
I use inclines in places I want villagers to go, but I have vines hidden around cliffs that are more decorative so they're easier to reorganize. for example, I use inclines for my neighborhoods and shops, but I have vines hidden behind the cliffs that make up my entrance that I change seasonally.
I like the look of the inclines. I like that the villagers can actually use those cuz they cant use the ladders. The ladders do look nice in certain places though, like smaller areas where an incline would be "too much" or wouldnt fit. I dont think theyre really worth the money they "save" bcuz the whole point of bells are to spend on the aesthetic of your island anyway. and once you hit post game bells come super easily anyway.
Incline’s serve their purpose well. Ladders and vines are best used for hard to get to places or as a temporary solution. You can’t really just replace a beautiful incline with a tiny wooden ladder.
I love the inclines. Paying for them and bridges are the closest thing to paying for the projects that were in New Leaf. That and the mini game island were my favorite parts of New Leaf so I wouldn't give up on inclines in Horizons since that takes away my fun. I don't care for decorating that much and I've barely terraformed at all.
I flattened my island for almost all the area, so I didn't have inclines because I just didn't need them. Now, I have a few raised areas, but I exclusively use vines (so it looks more natural) to go up and down the levels.
honestly if you have a lack of bells then you may need to rethink how you are playing (plant lots of crops). I use the brick stairs incline as i love the way it looks.
I honestly use the inclines for aesthetic and because I love seeing my villagers use them. Though I do use both. Yes, inclines and bridges are a waste of bells but they just look nice.
My island has a cliff immediately at the entrance, I wish these ladder set up kits worked there so people didn’t need to bring a ladder to visit my island.
I left my inclines up and put ladder kits in between. I hid a few vines as a "ladder" in the cliffs surrounding my museum. Other than that I just have my regular inclines n ladder kits
I just got a switch oled today and realized that I can have a new island 🥳 My main island on the regular switch has been with me since launch day and I can't handle restarting it but I stopped playing for a long time. It's gonna be a lot of fun beginning a new island from scratch with all the updates now (and the dlc) so I'm looking up videos to help me do things differently, thank you. 🥳
Inclines can look really pretty in lots of builds, and it also means more areas of your island will be accessible to your villagers as they don't climb up ladders. As someone who likes to see my villagers interacting with my builds, this is important for me
The villagers can't climb the ladders so they don't have access to all the areas so there's that, which means limited interaction with them or placing their homes up high. I do use the vines here and there but I keep the inclines as well.
I am using the ladders in places an incline wont fit. It took me a while to decide on inclines to begin with, their placement was with the intention for my villagers to have access to all of my island. They dont use ladders or vines. The ladders make great shortcuts for me however!
I like the ladders, but I feel like inclines are more convenient. And they give your island that nice esthetic that the island needs. Also, your villages are stuck without inclines. They don't go up and down ladders. Bill was stuck on the cliff where I put his house until I put an incline so he could get down despite a ladder being against the cliff right in front of his house.
I keep forgetting to make the kits to make getting up the backs of my cliffs easier. However I don't know if the villagers can use the ladders or not. For me having my villagers roaming my entire island makes it feel more lived in and social.
I still like using inclines so my villagers can access and interact with everything i put on the island. They can't climb using ladders, they can't even jump on the jumping spots 😭
I use the vines a lot. I've only recently got the vine ladder diy. I felt the same way about bridges. I used Tera forming, land bridges and hop rocks instead of buying bridges. Thanks for the info! Bob's Gang!
I love the vines and moss for my fairycore island, best update ever. I do have a few inclines but not as many as my old island with the new items now. I have a few ladders but they're not as natural looking as the vines.
I have my original inclines still. They cost big bucks so I don’t want to waste that money. But I use vines all over my island so that I don’t have to run around to get to an incline. I don’t have many ladders but I have lots of vines.
I just found out something about happy home desionor ifone of your villagers that u gave a job on the island if they get sick it replaces them till they feel better
I have two inclines ladders and vines all over my island. I feel like the villagers don’t come down as much or roam around the island as much with the ladders and vines. I feel like since I put the inclines in the island The villagers roam the island.
Inclines look way better. Plus it's faster walking up an incline than climbing up a vine/ladder. I also like my villagers to access all parts of my island
When you were talking about being able to place vines and bridges “vertically” are you actually talking about “diagonally”? Or is something being lost in translation between British and American English?
Just me, or does anyone else find it kind of ironic that in the beginning, everyone was like "We HaVe To ViEw InCliNeS! We NeEd MoRe!", and now everyone is like "fuck inclines, latters are better"?
Bob's Gang I had planned out my island and needed 10 inclines to make it work, but when I found out that you could only have 8, I changed everything and deleted them all. I have got bored of my island so many times and spent hours changong it all anyway lol, so I just use the vines now
I still use Inclines mainly for my Villagers to navigate around since they can't use Ladders or Vines. Plus I rather travel up and down normally rather then having pressing A everytime on the ladder/vine (Sue me lol) regardless how expensive they are
first chance i got to get rid of the ladders i did. i hate them so much, inclines are just faster imo the number of times i would miss the ladder when trying to get up for a bug annoyed the crap out of me. now i have mostly inclines and some vines, but the vines are more for aesthetic then function
I only use vines on one area of my island that is inaccessible to my villagers. My secret beach because it's literally hidden and hard to get to on my island with how I've designed it so only I can access it unless I set up my warp pipe for anyone else
I like the inclines because I want my villagers to have access to my whole island. It’s an island for all of us not just me. I know they aren’t real and don’t care but I care

The only problem is Villagers cant use ladders or vines
But yeah I love me some of those ladder kits lol.
vine ladder set-up kits are such a pretty variation
I concur, I really feel that we should be using the latter Saint kits more as well as the vines. They’re beautiful way to design your island, they don’t take up as much space. However, if you don’t like me who designed there hell with the inclines in mind, it can be a bit difficult to change it to a ladder once you get the inclines in place. I did use ladders until the inclines were built.
I’ve started to use vines and slowly destroy my inclines, even though that can cost a few bells. I haven’t seen the ladders as yet.
Paying for them and bridges are the closest thing to paying
for the projects that were in New Leaf. That and the mini game island were my favorite
parts of New Leaf so I wouldn't give up on inclines in Horizons since that takes away my fun.
I don't care for decorating that much and I've barely terraformed at all.
I flattened my island for almost all the area, so I didn't have inclines because I just didn't need them. Now, I have a few raised areas, but I exclusively use vines (so it looks more natural) to go up and down the levels.
I have been using them all, I think it makes getting around so much easier
We need the inclines so the villagers could reach anothers levels…
honestly if you have a lack of bells then you may need to rethink how you are playing (plant lots of crops).
Those ladders and vines are so helpful!
I only have two inclines at the moment. But my island is COVERED in vines and I love it.
I still love the inclines, but the addition of vines has allowed for a lot of good shortcuts.
I keep forgetting to make the kits to make getting up the backs of my cliffs easier. However I don't know if the villagers can use the ladders or not. For me having my villagers roaming my entire island makes it feel more lived in and social.
They can't use ladders
I still like using inclines so my villagers can access and interact with everything i put on the island. They can't climb using ladders, they can't even jump on the jumping spots 😭
I do have a few hidden vines in my island. I still have my inclines. I did demolish one bridge and put a different one in its place.
Thanks for the info. I was totally unaware of this!
Just Isabelle is the only black sheep to this plan. Unless stars on your island doesn’t bother you all that much.
the thing is, villagers cant climb ladders or vines, they can only go up cliffs via inclines
If villagers could climb ladders then I would use them over ramps/inclines...I feel bad for my villagers when they can’t access areas 😂
Bob’s Gang! I do have quite a few vines and 2 inclines on my island. Thanks for the tips about the ladders!
Inclines look way better. Plus it's faster walking up an incline than climbing up a vine/ladder. I also like my villagers to access all parts of my island
I have three inclines and I might only add a fourth but idk how I'm gonna implement it. I do have ladders and vines to use as shortcuts though
Sadly, villagers do not use the ladders or the vines, so you would confine them more or less to whatever level or area you place their house(s)
Bob's Gang. I use so many vines on my Island it is my favorite way of getting around
I recently found out if you have someone visit your home and have an instrument out they play it!
ok but nobody is talking about the fact that at the beginning of the video Audie said: “I love Chops” 💀
I like both inclines and ladders. Which I use depends on space and the look I'm going for in that spot.
When you were talking about being able to place vines and bridges “vertically” are you actually talking about “diagonally”? Or is something being lost in translation between British and American English?
If you eliminate the inclines, the villagers will not be able to get around your island.
I don’t have inclines yet and half my villager houses are on my second level. Those villagers still come to the plaza, walk my beach, etc.
Just me, or does anyone else find it kind of ironic that in the beginning, everyone was like "We HaVe To ViEw InCliNeS! We NeEd MoRe!", and now everyone is like "fuck inclines, latters are better"?
Bob's Gang
I had planned out my island and needed 10 inclines to make it work, but when I found out that you could only have 8, I changed everything and deleted them all.
I also use the vines, so easy. Bob is what I think you said to write down
I love your island I want to make mine like yours it gave so much inspiration do you have a island tour???
This 20th I will!
I use both ladders and inclines. It's mostly inclines though for where i have my villagers homes. Bob's Gang
