Dani, I have been a certified diver for 55 years. I've dived in many places around the world. Many more places are on my bucket list. I love it. I will tell you this: Everyone has a fear of deep ocean water. Everyone. It is an in-built instinct, it is not intellectual. It lessens over time, but never really recedes to nothing. I have done wreck dives to 165 feet (50 meters,) drift dives in 6,000 feet (1,800 meters,)--saw a school of hammer-head sharks there! I have done cave diving in deep water with black-tip reef sharks. I also have a fear of the open deep. Get over it and get on with it. I want more of your amazing pics and vids. Some of the seal photos, IMO, are your best work. THANKS.

Yea I also am into diving and I can't say I ever had a fear of deep open ocean, but there is a certain 'ring' that keeps you on edge in such conditions for sure.

    • @uncleron9481

@Hans Apollo Sure. Why not? I'm not as spry as I was at 16, or 26, or 36, but diving is NOT strenuous. In fact, it's easier than walking up and down the stairs.

I've been diving for 40 years now, the last 25 as an instructor, but I never was afraid of deep ocean water. I'm focused, but then I'm focused on every dive.
Not only that, but I simply find it bloody marvelous hanging there in the water, knowing that the bottom is 500m or more below me (oh, and I'm in awe).

What happened to SVB is really scary, and goes to show that no corporation, however big, is immune to collapse. I have always had a deep-seated mistrust for corporations. I have plans to pull out most of my money, but don't know what to do with $350k sitting idly. I'd like to go into the stock market, maybe. Any ideas?

Your videography and background music are absolutely stunnning! I remember the first time I encountered wild dolphins. It was 1973 or 74, I was the topside watch on a submarine as we sailed west from Charleston, SC to our cruising/patrol destination - The Mediterranean Sea. We hadn't submerged yet (back then we had to wait until we were in international waters before submerging) and I watched from the conning tower as dolphins surfed in the bow waves, with a few seemingly jumping for joy every so often. It was an awesome sight! Later on after submerging I caught a glimpse of a whale in the periscope. Memories I sitll hold dear.

I went on a dolphin trip in Australia and after reading some comments here I have to share what our instructor told us (after the trip). He observed us being all excited and overjoyed on the beach, and interacting as if we had known each other since childhood, whereas before we were mostly a bunch of adult strangers, who had just met on a boat. He told us, the reason we felt so high was because dolphins activate some part of our brain that produces serotonin (from what I recall) and they communicate like that in between each other. This seems to be a reason, why dolphin therapy is great for autistic people. Every now and then people tell me about their dolphin experience and they will use all the same words to describe it: They were so happy, overjoyed, it was magical :) I wonder if there is really scientific evidence of this. There seems to be plenty of anecdotal evidence :)

When learning to swim in the ocean the first thing our coach said regarding the animals underwater was, "You are in there territory-be respectful" It was hard to remember that (and not to scream and flail) when I swam into a smack of jellyfish...and squid are pretty scary up close.

  • @QualeQualeson

Fear, or at least some trepidation when you plunge in the open sea is completely natural for most people I would think. Bobbing semi helplessly on top of the deep blue, with its vast water masses beneath you as deep as the mountains are high, sometimes deeper, teeming with all kinds of lifeforms that are somewhat strange to you and unlike you, in their right element. You're playing with the big boys now.
Added to that, there's a psycho-philosophical component that essentially confronts you with your insignificance, and ultimately your demise. It's scary, but also incredibly liberating and enlightening when you overcome it. And on this topic, I highly recommend the song "This is the sea" by The Waterboys, if you're not already familiar with it. Watch one of the song videos with clips from "Riding Giants" for that extra confidence boost it can give you to see how humans can interact with the ocean :)
