Seeing a connection between Baroque chaconnes and four-chord cycles in pop music, I used progressions from Daft Punk’s “Around the World” as a foundation or “ground bass” for improvised variations. I felt there was a special sleight-of-hand when cellists and violinists evoke multiple voices in Bach’s unaccompanied dance music; in this piece I explored contemporary approaches such as harp harmonics and bariolage to achieve multiple layers. --S.S.
