  • While I was in Virginia for a different project, I ended up upgrading the main house network so that they can have a better experience and we can get things ready for redoing the basement network gear to rack everything!

    As a resident of Virginia I personally take offense to the way you said
    "Wrap up this whole Virginia House Network"

    What Tone and Probe are you using from Amazon. You said you like it better than the fluke you linked in the info.

    Miller when wiring for the Panasonic pay attention to the polarity of the lines. Line 1 is -+ (ring and tip) and line 2 is + -. If you reverse it, it will still work but the voice mail will give you trouble. Also the cable that you are using it looks like plain Cat 5 and not Cat 5e. In that area I would use a shielded cable and use MoCA for the coax.

    I have never seen a telephone adapter to RJ45 before, are you able to put RJ45 ports where you have a telephone connector plate, so in a room or a bedroom and have a functional RJ45 connection?

    • @MillerTechnicalServices
      @MillerTechnicalServices  3 роки тому

      If they used cat 5, 5e, or 6 for the telephone wire and it isn’t daisy chained to other rooms, then yes you can. If it uses something else (generally 2 pair wire), then you’ll be limited to 10/100 speeds.

      @@MillerTechnicalServices ok thanks, I was hoping to use the telephone lines in the house to set up another computer or access point, but 10/100 is not the speed I would need. I am still looking at MOCA and that might work with my existing cable wire in my home.

      @@jimholloway1785 I have similar situation and I get gig over my cat5e by using ALL eight wires. In other words I converted the RJ11 plugs to RJ45 and used ALL eight wires. I have gig going in all bedrooms.

    Thank you for linking to your tools, I also use the Trendnet punch. Could you provide a link to the cheaper tone & probe please? Link provided is for a Fluke :)
    Look at a Led tone kit, it's great for toning an initial install to the patch panel almost instantly.
    After 15y in Smb IT services in moving away from traditional patch panels to inline keystone patch panels. Crimping & testing a (good) Rj45 end takes about 1/2 the time that it takes to punch down a good IDC port. Its more expensive (significant in my country) but considering it cuts your time by 40-60% per 24port patch panel, it really makes a massive difference per site. Also its easier for a Jnr tech to make a good Rj45 end, than a good punch down (tight twists to the termination point ; bare min jacket removal ; not working the cables over each other ; strain relief install etc).
    Thank you for sharing your install / upgrade!

    Good job. Will you look at mounting the APs on the ceiling at any time?

    • @MillerTechnicalServices
      @MillerTechnicalServices  3 роки тому

      There isn’t any access to run cables. I HATE leaving them on the floor, but there isn’t any way to get cables to the ceiling except for on the third floor. That ap will be ceiling mounted.

    How did you get started with this business? I’m in love and I want to do something similar but finding clients and building a business at 19 is hard in India

      ISPs suck here so I wanted to do it better. I told someone about it and they asked me to network their house too. Everything has been word of mouth from there. Being young doesn't make it any easier, but it did allow me to have lower prices because I didn't have any overhead cost like rent. Now I have raised my prices and have previous work under my belt to use as justification for my pricing.

    Never skip quality due to client requests, they do not know what they are doing. If anything goes wrong *you* will get the blame for not saying no & for not doing it the right way. If there is a gun to your head, make the client sign a document stating they have requested speed over quality & that xyz shortcuts will be taken with abc pro/con. It's far too easy for clients to turn around and blame us as "the don't know IT"..
