  • Some may think nothing good usually happens when electricity and water mix.
But Fish & Game scientists equipped with electric fishing devices are helping to protect New Zealand’s freshwater fish and rivers.
Staff have almost completed summer electric fishing programmes to monitor fish populations on rivers across many corners of New Zealand.
Wearing backpack electrofishers and insulated waders, staff have been walking up riffles, runs and pools of streams.
They sweep the water with a pole that emits a low-voltage, high-current charge.
