Doing that method is actually helping me a little bit.. Maybe you could try it :D

Honesty the reason I love this movie is because Mirabel doesn't end up getting a gift. I really like that because it sets aside the generic idea that you will only be happy once you are useful, or once you are like everyone else. But by not have Mirabel have a gift, but still being loved by everyone at the end of the movie, really makes it such a beautiful movie. Especially for younger kids, who might feel like they have to be perfect and fit in with everyone around them in order to be loved and happy.

In the end, the house doesn’t receive another candle, which was the symbol of their miracles that they had to live up to. Instead of having their individual doors (symbolic of pedestals), the family is all together on the front door. The house was an extension of the family’s mental state, which was why it broke apart. Then it came back to life because of Mirabel, who could see the problems and brought everyone together, healing what was broken. She doesn’t have a gift because she didn’t need one. Her glasses are symbolic of the different perspective she can see. She is meant to be a family leader like her grandma.

I think the most memorable moments would be the Bruno scenes ( we expect him to be this edgy dark and messed misunderstood villain taking revenge on the family or something .. ) but he ends up being a sweetheart who got blamed for something he couldn't control and I think that's extremely personal.. as well as the fact the fact that the main character kinda feels like the middle child just trying to Impress everyone..and getting told : " shhhhhhhh!! Not now!! " I think that's pretty relatable.. as well as it's stunning music / soundtrack .. this movie REEKS of personality and the song numbers and interactions wouldn't be the same if it didn't..like at the middle / begining when the main character didn't know the little brother was the one she was talking to.. showing she's not focused enough and too energetic to notice the sister wouldn't eat like that.. and when he gets told to stop.. it's a moment of amusement because we know he does things like that on a daily basis and his parents are just used to it at this point..
    That's personality

    • @benjaminbierley2074
      @benjaminbierley2074 2 роки тому +54

Not only something he couldn't control, but (SPOILER bellw)
Alma literally asks him for a vision of Mirabel's future because she is worried about losing the miracle her family has, and when Bruno does see a vision that seems to be 50/50 on something bad happening he knows they will assume the worst of Mirabel...WHICH THEY DO when the vision is finally revealed. Alma is as close as the movie gets to having what would qualify as an antagonist since she is the root cause for the issues plaguing her family due to her lifelong grief over seeing her love die before her eyes, ironically the thing that possibly birthed the miracle is also tearing it down, since as we see in her flashback when she puts on the black scarf and continues to wear it into the present day that she never stopped mourning and has been carrying that grief hard and projecting it onto her family through her desire for their miracle, home, and family to be "perfect" and no one has questioned it since on the surface it seems benign, which is the same with the rest of the family who on the surface seem fine but beneath have serious issues with the roles they've been shoehorned into but feel unable to do anything about it since Alma is a seemingly unassailable matron figure in their family...which makes Mirabel finally calling her out on her BS all the rawer, and does lead to Alma realizing she has been hurting her family badly for a long time.
As the video said the movie is outside the norm in scope and stakes but is much more complex and intimate of a story than most.

I think them getting their powers back isn't undermining the message of the movie. On top of the main reason being that ANTONIO DESERVES A JAGUAR, the fact that with their powers back they can use it how *they* want, and not feel tied down to the past expectations placed on them continues with the message conveyed. Isabella can start growing herbs and more exotic species, Luisa can start to relax more and choose when she'll use her strength, Pepa can be more in tune with her emotions and be allowed to "thunder". At first I didn't like the return of the powers but now I see it as a way to continuing what they learned - that despite the fact they have the *potential* for greatness, it's up to themselves as individuals how they use it, and that they shouldn't let someone else's expectations decide how they'll live their lives.
Edit: also, it's a popular take in the fandom that Mirabel's gift is the same as Abuelas, making her sort of like the successor to abuela. And that being their connection to the Casita. If you pay attention Mirabel is the one that talks to Casita the most, Casita protects her and allowed her to reach the candle while the other family members failed, Casita's front door becomes Mirabel's gift door, etc. Mirabel became the candle, the light, the magic that tied the family together and allowed Casita to be reborn. Abuela doesn't have powers like the rest of the members, and neither does Mirabel, showing the mirror images they are of each other.

1:39 as a Colombian, I felt the stakes where really high. I think the part most impresed me, and surley most of Colombians, was the inclusion of the armed conflict in the movie. Colombian history is complicated, it's a country that almost since it's fundation has been in a constant civil war, a country sumerged in rural violence and displacement, a violence that has affected almost every familly in the country. That's what we see in " Dos oruguitas" at the begining of the movie, and that's what the miracle is for. The mountains protect the Encanto of all the violence and conflict behind them, and is that conflict Abuela fears the most. It's not just a House and people with cool powers, it's a hideout, a safe place, a paradise for a displaced Colombian, as many others. I myself can see my own abuela, who had to flee her house at a very young age for the same reason.
Nonetheless, they didn't touched that as much in the movie, nor explained it, but I understand why, it was kinda unnecessary to explain a sociopolitical conflict of the 1900's in a movie about familly and superpowers, it was more of a easter egg for us Colombians hehe.

As shown by Mirabel's treatment, you have to have a gift-and therefore be actively using it to prove you have one-to be considered special or worth paying attention to. Camilo is constantly changing forms to get noticed, so he probably doesn't spend much time as himself. He hasn't been given any character development because he hasn't given himself a character to be developed.

I disagree that they should have lost their powers. It would have come across as an overly preachy and unsatisfying ending… sort of like an adventure story where they don’t get any actual treasures they were hunting for except the friendship they made along the way. 🙄The powers aren’t the problem, but how they approach them, and it would be so unsatisfying if they suddenly don’t get to utilize them anymore when they’ve finally figured out how to have a healthy view on them. Marible does get something by the end, and it’s heavily implied it was always her based on how the house responds to her throughout the movie. Her magic door is the front door to the house itself. She’s like the next in line to take the grandma’s position… as someone who doesn’t have individual powers but who is the keeper of the house and family magic as a whole. this, and the powers not coming back would be inconsistent with the miracle and the casita being partly a metaphor for their family's bond.
the miracle died and casita collapsed because it needed to - someone needed to have that argument with abuela, and break down the current family dynamic, the 'foundation' that they needed to be perfect to be safe and that the miracle is more important than the family itself, and they rebuilt it anew and formed a different family dynamic and stronger bond, so of course the miracle came back. especially after they included and properly acknowledged mirabel.

  • @zenawyn1952

I really loved the fact that they didnt give Mirabel a gift- because along with these themes, the lesson itself was so meaningful. Mirabel doesn't need one. Bruno says it too. "You're exactly what this family needs." yeah, she is because Mirabel proves to the family that you don't NEED a gift. Mirabel does so much without one, because she's had to figure out what to do without one. Think about it- the most she has in contact with magic is Casita whom she actually communicates with, like emotionally. She is also more understanding and open. She is expressive and daring. Despite everything, she still wanted to make her family proud.
I also love the premise of everyone's fears- they don't want to disappoint Abuela. You see Isabela's face drop when she enters the scene after her song 'What Else Can I Do'. Abuela described her as 'out of control' and you see the anxiety on her face.
I personally loved seeing Luisa emotionally broken down by the fact that her powers werent working. Because it let her emotions she was building up flow out- when you have to feel strong all the time, your emotions become more sensitive and it's hard to work with them.
I'm glad they got their gifts at the end because now they get to express them as an extension of themselves and not the definition of themselves. Luisa should be able to use her gift for herself now too and not just for others. Isabela should be able to express herself more openly and not adhere to what others believe her to be. Pepa now doesnt have to keep the facade of always being happy (also expressed in the colours she wears as her whole family wears yellow). Like this entire movie showed what can happen to a family when things go unspoken- you're compared to each other, pressure is out on you- you forget how to express yourself, you become fearful of disappointing others. It is such a deep movie.
(I'm sorry about the essay but I am so glad you reviewed this movie because it really hit home for me. I love your content!)

Camilo, Isabella, Luisa all are trying to get to the candle to save it using their powers, but they start to fail so they can't. Mirabel is able to get there because she knows how to not relly on a magic gift, and is the more in tune with the house to make it help her get there.

I personaly didn't feel like them getting there miracles back undermined the message. Miracles are like talents, and for me the movie was way more about them realicing that they are more than just there talent (and abuela realicing that she has to stop mentaly scarring the kids by putting to much pressure on to them), than it was about them learning that they don't need there talents. I mean, Issabellas howl thing was about embracing her miracle by doing the thing SHE wants to do with it. Antonio was happy with his gift to talk to animals, and Mirabels mom never seemed to get in trouble for her gift (probably becouse she is literally the only one that abuela can't put as much pressure on, becouse it doesn't get better than healing by providing foot).
Sure, it would have still worked if they hadn't gotten there powers back, but for me it would have feelt like a punishment for characters like Antonio. The characters can always decide to not use there miracles (like Bruno did before Mirabel confinced him to try it again), but if the miracles where gone for good that form of making decitions for themselfes would been gone becouse they wouldn't have no choice left.
I think the only thing I didn't like about the movie was how little we got to see of some of the characters, which is why I would love a series or more movies! (I mean, it didn't even dip it's toes into the possibility of Camillo having to always be someone else, becouse everyone else is more usefull than him just beeing himselfe, or Dolores beeing able to hear EVERYTHING, including bad things like her family members arguing behind closed dores! So much untaped potential!)
Oh, and the concluding conversation with abuela becouse I think Mirabel was WAY to forthcoming! Sure that women had to go through terrible things before getting the miracle and got probably traumaticed by it, but that doesn't excuse her from mentaly damaging two generations of kids to the point that one of them RAN AWAY and the other one was cowering under his bed at the age of 5 becouse he was afraid to disapoint! And that might be a cultural thing, but she also isn't the only one making them a family. They would still be a family if she where gone. (The ending line of "there are no cracks we can't fix together" was good though)
Aaaand at this point I'm just venting and rambeling xD At least Mirabels words didn't sway her from realicing that she needed to change and treat her family better, which I find great! Love me some characters that are willing to work on themselfe after finally noticing they screwed up!
(Also, I can't be the only one who thinks Mirabels miracle was literally the entire house, right? I mean, the hous listens to her even more than to the others, and she is the one who brings the magic back by opening it's door. Would also make sens why she didn't get a room, since the rooms reflect the persons miracle.)

This movie is a nice little one shot. The family getting it's powers back I see as a reaffirmation of that they can be more than their powers by giving them the ability to say no, it's their choice instead of the choice being taken away from them again. Throughout their lives, the didn't distinctly have a choice about wanting to help because of the pressure from Abeula and the community. Bruno made a choice for himself but it was the same sacrificial choice for the family like his father. To protect them and ensure their peace, he removed himself because he felt that was the better option.
I would love to see a mini series that continues to show the family and the progress about being able to live for themselves more and exploring who they are with their powers and not needing to be stuck with them.

I kinda feel the opposite way about the family getting their gifts back, they were worried about meeting people's expectations precisely because they have those powers, if they didn't have them anymore, they could simply avoid their problems with the excuse that they don't have their gifts anymore, by keeping their powers it shows that they don't have any excuse to not meet people's expectations other than taking care of their own mental health.

She's just the guardian or something. With Mirabel's sister, Luisa finally having her rest, Isabella finally feeling herself. Tia Pepa expressing her emotions, and Dolores finally being with her crush. What's even fun about Dolores is that in the song "we don't talk about bruno" her lines was "He told me that the man of my dreams
Would be just out of reach
Betrothed to another" while we see the guy slowly walking closer to the house, FOR ISABELLA!! And take note she didn't fell for him with his looks, she fell for him cause he cares so much for his mother, always read a poetry everytime he sleeps. I disagree about the getting their powers back at the end thing. I think it’s somewhat necessary for the point the movies trying to make. Regardless of whether a member of the madrigals had powers or not, they had a certain role and position in the family. Isabela is the first born and expected to bring in the next generation of Madrigals. Having powers doesn’t change that. I experience that in my own family. I mean, I’m male so it’s a little different but there’s still a level of pressure to live up to that role. Imagine the madrigals were exceptional engineers instead of magical, who built the area they live in. There would still be the same type of pressure on the family to live up to standards, continue the family legacy and protect the community. The family loses their gifts because there wasn’t any harmony between them. The same way a normal family can’t function without some level of unison. In my eyes, the gifts are the equivalent to knowing how to drive. The car getting totaled doesn’t make everyone forget how to use it.

i just love how the family are made to be relatable. Each character corelates with either yourself or opens your eyes to how someone could feel around you. When all the fans started raving about characters like Luisa and how she screams 'older child with all this familial pressure on her shoulders' made me start realising that i'm definitely not the only person who feels like that. They made these characters to be people - not just characters. They made them relatable and highlight the fact that the older you get, the more likely you feel pressured and defeated. It highlights the amount of strain parents and familial expectations can place on a child and shows the after-effect of those expectations, through anxiety, weakness and outright anger/spite.
The reason Antonio is so happy about his gift? He's a child - all of them would've felt that way when they first got their gift, Bruno can see into the future, Luisa can start throwing heavy things around. I can only imagine how each of the characters felt when they got their gifts the first time, all the excitement and joy they would've felt inside. It shows the world is bright and beautiful and wonderful. But you have to grow up, you have to start being an adult and start facing the expectations people place on you. Start feeling the pressures of life as they start to weigh you down, and you realise that you aren't as special as your 'power' and the notion of never living to your full potential just hangs in the back of your mind. Who knows what Camilo and Antonio would be like if the film were set 5-6 years in the future when they're older, would they still be happy to shape shift and talk to animals? Or would they have been working and formed to be like Luisa who never stops?
It's just an all around great movie in it's deeper messages and underlying theme. I honestly love it for that.

AS A COLOMBIAN, lmao sorry i have to clarify, the movie is a perfect representation of what violence does to victims, idk if everywhere, but specially in Colombia. For generations victims of forced migration had do EVERYTHING to keep their families safe, even dying (like pedro in the movie), and the preassure is not just to "keep others happy" is also to survive. the magic represents the safety they have of an outgoing war outside of their little magical town, so any mistake could put them back to a place of uncertainty and violence, hence why abuela is so protective of it. she is the only one alive who was lived first hand the horrors of colombian violence and therefore the only one who know what truly is at stake. idk i guess its weird seeing how americans and foreigners interpreted the movie as a metaphor for impostor´s syndrome and insecurities and abuela being mean and traumatizing her family when in reality is a tale of a colombian family trying their best to hold onto the safety they magically found in a time where violence was at its highest. i mean is not a coincidence that they set the movie in a moment in history where violence was at its peak, they were armed groups killing people in towns and forcing them to migrate (i guess its set in the 40´s) when they could have just set it in the present time when violence has decreased a little. the dos oruguitas scene literally explains word for word why they have this preassure off and the backstory of the family and americans keep pushing this narrative of self worth and insecurities when they´re also there but forget about literal historical context (i think this is the disney movie that uses the most historical context of the country the're set in, not brave, or even coco do that so strongly) and im so tired of people overlooking that. anyways. great video tho and ty for saying abuela is not the villain but just another victim

Looking back on Moana, it was very empty a lot of the time, which isnt the fault of the artists, its just because the setting is mostly the ocean and generic islands. The two most interesting set pieces being the underworld, which we didn't get much of and the little coconut dudes pirate ship. This movie I think, took what Moana and Raya had and dialed it up a bit! I think one of my most favorite aspects of it was the movement. I like that they get their powers back at the end. If they hadn't, then it'd be more like they're being forced to adapt to the circumstances, instead of actively CHOOSING to change and put importance on themselves as a person. Like, Luisa got her powers back, but did she get back to work/do an action to help someone do something? No, after Casita prompted her to rest she kicked back and relaxed with a drink, showing that even with her powers back she's gonna practice more self-care from now on.
There is also the symbolism that, because of their family breaking, the magic is breaking too, and then the magic came back once their family relationships were fixed. And I love that Mirabel's door is the front door of the house, and surrounding her are the images of her family. I personally think that it was good that they ended up getting their gifts back in the end, for kind of the same reasons as you, just inverted. I feel like taking away their gifts permanently would have undermined their journeys and development and sort of blame all their issues on the miracles. And it is mainly because of the miracles that they have these issues, but at the same time, taking them away would imply that taking away their powers is the solution to all thei problems. The miracles they are given are part of them, and one of the main themes is learning who you are and not what everyone else thinks of you. In cases like Bruno, who has suffered so much because of his gift, Isabela, who is just now learning how to explore the other parts of her miracle and not just the perfect side, and even Pepa who always has to worry about controlling her emotions for the sake of others, coming to terms with what their powers mean for them is one of their main problems. I feel like just taking away their powers would feel like an easy fix, and even though getting their powers back at the end feels like an 'Everything's fine again' move, it's important to remember that a lot of members need to learn that their gift isn't them, and a part of that involves accepting that their miracle is part of them, but not all.

Bruno told Isabella that she'd have the life she longed for. It was never revealed to us whether that or not that meant, the "perfect life as the perfect daughter", or _"Being able to have the freedom to choose, thus, finally being in control of _*_her own_*_ life."_ Which comes _after_ Bruno's vision involving Maribel.

I think it's okay that they kept their powers because I read Mirabel as a disability metaphor. It's fine if everyone gets powers and she doesn't, she's enough without them. So is everyone else, but their gifts are still part of who they are. From now on they can build relationships with their skills that aren't unhealthy.
I feel like every artist and/or gifted kid can relate to that.

I think it's actually more powerful that they got their powers back.
Had they lost their powers, any change that came afterwards in their behavior could be caused by the lack of powers.
It is more powerful in my opinion if they keep their powers and learn how to deal with their emotions even when they have the possibility of relapsing into old destructive behaviors.

I absolutely LOVE this movie and I haven’t even seen it yet cuz I don’t have Disney+. As someone else in the comments said, I really hope they make like a series or something bc Camilo and Dolores deserve more screen time.
Also the songs were the best part of the movie, fight me. I wasn’t even aware that Lin made most of my favorite movie music, like in Moana, Hamilton, or Vivo (underrated gem, music wise) and the music in Encanto is now added to the list. He’s a genius!
I don’t even care about the movie plot wise, (tho it was good); the animation and the music made this a movie I will be obsessed with until I die.

To be honest.. The past few movies have just been action on action on action like Moana, Frozen/Frozen 2, and Raya. Not that there’s anything wrong with it but once you start thinking deeply about how much Disney puts high stakes on a lot of their movies it starts getting dull..
Which is why Luca, Coco, Onward and even Encanto, are my favorite movies, yes there is a little bit of action but the deeper symbolic storyline under the surface ( pun not intended ) is what makes the movies unique.
For example Luca might seem a bit Generic like how the kids wants to have a good summer by winning a Vespa and keeping a fishy secret, but the symbolism underneath is that you can live a good life despite not all people would accept these flaws you would have such as ethnicity/race, sexuality, religion, etc.

    1) No villain, no huge adventure
    2) The writers get to focus more on giving us characters that a lot of people can relate to
    3) Accurate depiction of Colombian culture and a Colombian family, Disney actually did their research
    4) Its acknowlegdement of intergenerational trauma that hurt a lot of Colombians to this day
    5) It is beautifully animated
    6) Whoever they cast as all the voice actors and singers, I love them
    7) When you have Lin-Manuel take care of writing the songs, you've guaranteed your success, literally all the songs are flawless
    8) This movie feels like a big great family therapy session
    9) There are so many details that you can catch if you look hard enough on second watch
    10) No dead parents that serve as a tragic backstory for the main character, they're very much alive and supportive
    11) Very important theme: if your family treats you differently, it's not necessarily because they don't love you; it's simply because they face pressure of their own
    12) Makes me both laugh and cry
    13) It's about a family who lost sight of what really matters and mends back broken bonds, warms your heart, doesn't it?
I am so gonna show this movie to my mom!

i thought the exact same thing about the ending… but after one rewatch of the movie, i realized that then getting their powers back is the most fitting ending. the movie’s point is that “the miracle is you,” the you being every single member of the madrigal household. the reason that the house breaks and the magic dies is because of family division, and that rebuilt house becoming magic again is extremely symbolic of the fact that the miracle is indeed the entire madrigal family together, unified and in harmony with one another. and look at the final celebratory scene: everyone has those gifts, but now they are confident and assured enough with themselves to use them the way they want. tia pepa dances in her rain cloud, no longer afraid of her negative emotions. isabela gets to grow what she feels inside, and truly express herself on her own terms. and luisa tries to work, but she gets promptly thrown into a hammoc… the other family recognizes her work ethic and want to give her the relaxation she needs. and at the very end, the mural on the door showcased mirabel in front, glowing the brightest… maybe her true gift is being that connective tissue holding the family together? idk, but my mind has completely been changed, and i think the family getting back their miracle on their own terms is the most fitting and beautiful possible ending.

I agree a lot with what you've said. It was a film that went over a surprising amount of more mature themes of familial struggles.
Especially Luisa's song. That one hit hard for me personally. As the eldest daughter, I often ended up being the more responsible one, I was and am still pretty good with my academics as well.
However this lead to me putting expectations on my self to study harder as I began taking college courses while still in high school, try my best to be there for my siblings, help around the house where I could, and try to exercise when I could because I don't want to be physically weak.
It's not even my parents who put those expectations on me, the closest is maybe my grandfather who is in the medical field as a pediatrician. I looked up to him a lot growing up and wanted to be an amazing doctor like him. He never specified any standards for me, but I remember his face lighting up so much when I told him I wanted to become a doctor when I was 6 years old. Later on my mom told me that he wants to give some of the buildings he owns so that I can open my own clinic. I think partly why I put so much pressure on myself to push my limits. I guess I just really want to make him proud in addition to the fact that medicine has always been my passion.
However, pursuing that field hasn't been easy. It doesn't help that there has been tension in my family as well. This film in general hit a bit too close to home for me, even if the pacing felt odd at times.
The cracking of the house in the film was pretty blatant symbolism that I feel like explained the underlying brokeness of the family in this film. It explains it in an easily digestible way that younger audiences can understand and for older audiences to pick up on that deeper nuance. Like you said, this family carried this film and what made it so appealing to me personally.
I come from a large Hispanic family as well and just all of the mannerisms and familial dynamics we're shown so well. I loved all of the Spanish tid bits sprinkled in frequently because that's often how it is. If we're speaking dominantly English, sometimes Spanish phrases are added in for things that just can't be translated well, or we don't remember at that moment. It felt so real.
Going back to Louisa's song, the lyrics about the pressure always being on her just wow. I relate a lot. I have this weird need to be nearly always being doing something somewhat productive. I always want to help however I can.
If it wasn't presented in a comedic manner, I'm almost sure that I would be close to crying by the end of that song.

I absolutely adore this movie and I don’t know why. Mirabel’s speech about never being good enough really hit hard, and I love the lyric in the song All of You where Mirabel goes “But the stars don’t shine, they burn.”
I also think that the movie was surprisingly funny too. I went in to watch the movie with an “Oh this is probably gonna be bad,” attitude, and I kept that attitude up until the end of the second song, which ruined the movie for me. But as soon as I cried during Surface Pressure, I knew I’d love the rest of the music and the movie.
I liked how they silently gave characters personality. There’s a clip where Mirabel hands a shovel to Camilo, and he accidentally drops it, then looks back up to Mirabel to make sure she didn’t see that. And whenever there’s a loud noise, I noticed that Dolores always covers her ears because of her gift, and I noticed how she’s very quiet until she loses her gift, and she’s more energetic. She’s also the only one who doesn’t talk bad about Bruno in the song “We don’t talk about Bruno,” because she knows the he never left.
And Bruno as a character is great. I like how he’s made out to be this scary and evil villain until you find out that he’s just an awkward and kind-hearted man who left to protect his family. He’s also funny too. When Mirabel lifts him out of the hole, he just looks around for a second and then goes “Bye.” That bit was really funny because it showcased how awkward he was immediately. And I like how every characters personality quirk has something to do with their gift. Dolores’ being that she whispers, Camilo’s being that he doesn’t know quite who he is yet, so he tries on different personas to try and figure it out, and Bruno’s being that he’s superstitious because he likes knowing that he has a sense of control over his luck by using some good luck charms, like throwing salt over his shoulders, crossing his fingers and holding his breath, and knocking on wood.
So yeah, that’s everything I can think of that makes me like the movie. Other than the characters themselves (except Alma, I don’t really like her.) They’re all funny in their own way. Mirabel’s dad is really funny for me, and so are Félix and Pepa. Bruno, Dolores and Camilo are all quite comedic, and Antonio throughout the whole film is just amazing.
    Okay, thanks for reading
No wait I have more actually.
The soundtrack is AMAZING! I could listen to it on loop forever. The Family Madrigals is a catchy, upbeat tune and it’s the perfect opener for a movie like this.
Then there’s Waiting On a Miracle which is so amazing. It’s beautiful and the visuals are absolutely stunning to look at. I love how Mirabel walks around in a freeze frame of the moment they took a photo without her, and I love how she immediately admits to herself that she’s not fine. She ends up doing basically everything she says she can’t do. She showed the family something new, she healed what was broken. It’s just amazing.
Then there’s surface pressure which is a perfect song for Luisa to show how stressed she feels about carrying everything. I like the line “Give it to your sister and never wonder if the same pressure would have pulled you under,” because it hits close to home for me.
Then there’s We Don’t Talk About Bruno. I like how it progresses from someone who knows a lot about Bruno, to someone who knows barely anything, only the things he was told by others. It starts with Pepa, who knows lots because they were siblings, then since Dolores and Isabela are similar ages, they have some memories of Bruno, and Dolores knows he’s still in the house. And then there’s Camilo who has barely any memory of Bruno, because Bruno disappeared when Camilo was five, so Camilo makes him out to be some sort of Boogey man.
Then there’s What Else Can I Do? Which is an amazing song to showcase Isabela breaking out of her perfection and seeing her power growing, just like Bruno said it would do.
Then Dos Oruguitas is a lovely, calm song that plays over Alma and Pedro’s love story. It fits so well, and it brings tears to my eyes.
And finally, probably one of my favourite songs, there’s All Of You, which is played over the ending. It has aspects of every song that’s been so far (minus Dos Oruguitas and Waiting On a Miracle) and it’s beautifully written. It has parts from the opener; “Look at our home, we need a new foundation.” And “This is our home, we’ve got every generation.”
Surface Pressure; “Give it to your sister, your sister’s older,” and “I may not be as strong but I’m getting wiser.”
We Don’t Talk About Bruno; “Okay so we gonna talk about Bruno?” And “We don’t talk about Bruno.”
What Else Can I Do; “Come on! Let’s plant something new and watch it fly! Straight up to the sky, let’s go!” And “How far can I rise? Through the roof, to the skies, let’s go!”
It also has a frozen reference when Bruno says “Let it Go.”
Out of all the songs, my favourite is waiting on a miracle because of how beautiful and stunning and heartfelt it is.
Okay, now this is all, thanks!

Being from Colombia, I have a special place in my heart for this movie because I have at least one aunt or uncle who matches a character in the movie! My mother is Julieta; every time someone gets sick she thinks she can fix it with soup or an infusion. I have an aunt who both acts and even LOOKS like Pepa; She's the ONE member of the family who is known for feisty, but getting things done. I have another aunt who loves to gossip indiscriminately, but she tries to speak in good tones about other people. Two uncles are doctors; they say, "Learn to eat low in sugar or your health will deteriorate and you will have heart disease." Everyone who doesn't listen to their good advice (especially men) do, indeed, end up getting sick. I identify with Mirabel because I loved reading books in English, so everyone perceived me like the off-beat grandchild. This movie makes me feel so homesick I have an image of the madrigal house on my computer's home screen because it reminds me of Bucaramanga.

Even the minor family members are shown to have some level of anxiety, Pepa has to hide her emtions because their dangerous even when she's feeling happy as seen when her pride in her son Antonio is dismissed because her cloud will get him wet, she constantly says "clear skies" to get the could away. Julieta is afraid of her mom to a level as she won't speak up to her and will leave at that and won't stand up for Mirabel sure she loves Mirabel but never stands up to her infront of her mom, Antonio struggles before he gets a gift on thinking "Hey maybe I won't get one, will I be like Mirabel?" Thats dark. Dolores almost had to watch the men of her Dreams be marry to her cousin and probably has to hide many people secrets which she over hears, that's alot of pressure to hide..

everyone’s talking about how mirabel didn’t end up getting a power but i feel like she kinda did.
she loved her family and her house as is shown at the beginning of the film. but when she was singing about how she felt like she didn’t fit in with her family right after antonio got his gift, the house started cracking because she was mad and felt alone.
when she was finally getting along with her sister isabel, after finding out that isabel was capable of making something imperfect and they were dancing in her room🥺💞🤤😝, the candle burner brighter.
right after this scene mirabel was arguing with her grandma and the house completely crumbled.
and when the house was crumbling you could see it was kicking everyone out APART FROM mirabel. it even helped her grab the candle and protected her when it collapsed around her (the doors sheltered her i think).
not sure if this actually relates to mirabel in any way, but i feel like the house depends on her bond with her family. or i could be completely wrong and it’s not just dependent on mirabel

I think Mirabel's "gift" might just be the whole damn house because in the end the whole movie is about the fate of her family being in her hands and in the end the doorknob placed in the front of the house has her name on it. You could say the house mostly has to be because of Abuela but even so, in the end she was selfish and "forgot what the house was all about" and Mirabel reminded her of that. There isn't any clear indication as to what her power would be if she got one anyways. The story mostly keeps Mirabel's desires, other than her family, pretty vague.

People seem to be missing the point that Encanto is about a community, and the Madrigals are part of it. Encanto is literally the name of the village. The gifts don't actually benefit the Madrigals personally. They have the gifts to benefit, protect and help the community thrive over the years. So the stakes of the magic being lost are not only the Madrigals personally losing their powers and magic house, but the community becoming vulnerable again. Remember that the miracle came from abuelo's sacrifice to protect his familly and friends from those persecutors. The Encanto community was created by a group of refugees who were running from a life dangering condition (much probably a civil war, given the context of Colombian history). So, if the magic, which created Encanto and protects everyone inside it from the dangers of the outside world (have y'all realized that was no way in or out of Encanto, being the place surrounded by mountains?) fades, what would be of the community? Would they be exposed again to the rage and violence that forced their ancestors to flee from their previous homes? As you can see, the stakes are actually pretty high, and I believe this is abuela's main concern and the root of her urge to protect her familly and her community, as well as the source of the expectations she so hardly puts on her gifted children.

I think the point with getting the powers back makes more sense if you see it allegorically. All the members have some specific skill that they shine (or burn…) with, but it is something they are only able to utilize properly being part of the family (the family unit represented in the house). The old family unit gets destroyed partly due to the demands from the old matriarch, but it gets rebuilt through Mirabel’s leadership and the hard work of each member. Which allows everyone to get their power back. And Mirabel’s power turns out to be the house (family unit) itself… Remember how her door just “disappeared” and there were “just” the house left?

  • @pianoanime3462
    @pianoanime3462 2 роки тому +1

Don’t know why no one else talks about this, but Mirabel did get a gift. She just didn’t get a room. She’s the only one who holds a conversation with casita. Not talk to or at, but a conversation with. Her understanding of the house is mirrored by Antonio’s understanding of animals. Abuela is the only one without a gift, but she has a room. Mirabel however doesn’t have a room, but does have a gift. Additionally, at the end, she replaces the candle as the source of the miracle. So, she doubled up. But because she didn’t get a room no one ever even considered that maybe she had a gift that no one even considered. Everyone else talks to casita, but the only times where casita talks to someone and they understand complex ideas and thoughts from casita is Mirabel. When your room takes shape based off your gift, what room would form from a gift that allows you to speak to the house and even be the replacement for the candle? Any room like that would just vanish, it wouldn’t be a room, it be the house itself. She got her door at the end, but she always had a gift. Just no one acknowledged the miracle and mirabel is, with notable exceptions. Bruno never says that Mirabel didn’t get a gift, but he was in the walls and surely would’ve watched the ceremony or at least listened. And he’d know from years of observing. Her mother and father accept her as she is, but still believe her not to have a gift. Bruno tells her at the end that she is the gift. But bruno isn’t talking hyperbole. He means that the gift no one noticed is that Mirabel is now the epicenter or source of the magic. She may not have any flashy talents or specialty that makes her more efficient in a particular field of work. She however is the source of the magic, and another generation will be ‘skipped’ so to speak to maintain the magic.

I just watched this last night, and I honestly wasn't expecting it to be such a personal story. The scene that really stuck out to me and actually made me gasp was when we saw that Bruno drew a place setting for himself behind the family portrait so that he could still join them. Before that scene, I realized that there was a deeper message when Luisa talked about having the weight of the family on her shoulders. I sat up and really paid attention. One of my favorite Walt Disney films in years.

The reason I love this movie is that every family member whose problem we get to see, is a problem I can relate to. Isabela's forced perfection, Luisa's repressed anxiety, hell, even Pepa's struggle with her own emotions is something I've felt one way or another. They're aspects of something all humans feel, unmet expectations. And Mirabel is just... the epitome of that. In a family full of people who force themselves to be "perfect", she doesn't even have the capacity to. She tries, as demonstrated wonderfully by her "I will never be enough for you" speech and Isabela's "if you didn't try so hard you wouldn't be in the way", but she doesn't succeed because she can't and, ultimately, none of them can.
Because the expectations they set for themselves is way too high. Isabela could never possibly be the flowery golden child that she has been shaped into, Luisa would never be able to get rid of her anxiety, Pepa can't be emotionless just so there are "clear skies", and Mirabel can't "make up" (in a fucked up way) for not getting a gift.
And the point of the movie is that they don't have to. None of them *have* to make these sacrifices, they don't have to meet the expectations set for them, either by others or themselves. And I love it, I love it so much.
Lin, you bastardly cunt, I applaud you.

the reason the family got their powers back is because the powers themselves are not bad, it is not bad to be gifted. The problems arise when those gifts are too focused on. The gifts did not need to change, but their relationship to their gifts did.

I heavily disagree with the notion that the family needed to lose their powers in order for the movie to make sense. The point of the movie wasn't "powers bad". It was the complications that came with associating your entire self worth with your powers. For example, for Luisa it was the stoicism and inability to express and deal with her emotions in fear of jeopardizing her family. The lesson wasn't that her strength was something she needed to get rid of. Instead what she needed was to learn to not rely on it for everything, and let herself be vulnerable and accept help if she needs it.

The sudden undertones in the movie about how truly controlling the head of the household can be was just MAGNIFICENT!!
The way that Abuela picks off a single white flowers from Isa’s head when it contrasts with the pink flowers she suddenly grew from shock.
The way she glared at Mirabel when she is singing to the kids and “trying to get away from them” in a playful manner.
The way Pepa is forced to practically hide her emotions and is forced to make herself have “clear skies” even when it’s perfectly fine to not be okay.
And most of all, the way that she develops this rule of “If it isn’t here and you don’t acknowledge it, it never happened.” This ideology is present in her treatment of Mirabel (she wants to forget her entirely since she doesn’t “contribute to making the family strong”) and her treatment of Bruno (never talking about him, thus trying to make it seem as though he was just a moment in time).
I also love that the sisters didn’t have some huge magnificent show of emotion when things began to bubble up. We never truly got an “I’m sorry..” from Isa and hell we never got one from Mirabel either and I LOVE IT! 😭 My older brother and I still have trouble apologizing to one another and seeing it accepted in a movie is so amazing…
This movie has been my favorite and I think will be my favorite for years to come 😭

The best part of the movie is the characters 100%, the characters is what has me hooked on Encanto

A minor correction: Mirabel got a gift when she was 5, just like the rest of the family. She got the house. Which is why she didn't get a specific room. Her door is the one at the front of the building.
Beyond being Casita's obvious favorite, she's also heir to the encanto.
Everything you said was wrong with the movie is exactly why Encanto is so good. It's easy to write a villain trying to destroy the world. It's a lot harder to write an ordinary family working through their conflicts. This is the second highest level of writing.
The highest is when there's no magic disappearing, no existential threat; just personalities trying to understand each other. It's very difficult to create a compelling story within those limits.
I don't know of any American animation studio capable of creating a story on that level yet.

I've watched an Encanto explained video, the the speaker said that despite Mirabel not getting a power, instead is implied by her likeness on the new casita's front door in the center, she will be the next leader of the Madrigals due to her love and dedication to her family despite on having a gift. Abuela did not receive a special power but everyone looks to her for leadership and guidance. However, she's old and won't be around forever so she'll need someone kind and strong to lead the next generation of Madrigals, and that leads to Mirabel being the successor to Abuela. Its an implied idea and i like it. BTW twisted wonderland is getting localized to the americas, do u plan to play or just wait for the anime?

What if Encanto wins best animated feature film of 2021 in the 2022 Oscars?

I think Mirabel's gift may be controling the others gifts, when she felt most unstable the house became more unstable, when she found out that Luisa was so overwhelmed, she took it away, when she saw the true Isabella, she helped her find out she didnt have to be perfect.

I loved Encanto so much. The message about family and gifts was so nice to see done so well. Luisa's struggle is relatable to me too. I'm a middle child, but due to some complications I won't get into, it's me and my little sister and my dad, so I'm the older sibling by circumstance. I'm 16 and I feel this pressure to be perfect, and it doesn't help that my father wants me to be exactly what he wants me to be. I relate to Luisa because of that, because she holds a lot on her back, literally and figuratively, and I deal with all that I deal with, and that really shows how the message of the movie was so well conveyed

something i liked the most about the movie is that it didnt circle and prance around Mirabel having insecurities of not having a gift then realizing she doesn't need one like most people thought the movie would go when it was teased.
she's aware of her worth even though she doesn't have a gift, she just felt invalidated that her family(mostly Abuela) doesn't see it that way, feeling left out for something she knows she can't change or control.
As much as I can relate to characters who are insecure, it feels overdone when it becomes the main focus of a movie or series. I want to be able to see that you can still struggle even though you know your worth, loved, etc. and its still okay
ps. the scene with bruno's drawn plate is now officially engraved in my heart, tht shit hit hard
