The lines she reads after ‘overexposed like an x-ray’ aren’t in the published version I have. I wonder if her publisher removed them or if her mother / Ted Hughes objected to them being included in later editions.
i have a version of ariel exactly as she intended and i was also confused about this. there are some lines in lady lazarus that were also cut out. i decided to look it up, and i think it’s because what she’s reading is an earlier version of her poems before they were published. it seems as if plath was the one who chose to edit certain lines out.
@@caralineg6568 Ted Hughes changed the order of the poems that was the original manuscript after Sylvia Plath sadly took her own life. Poems were also removed and replaced from a larger collection that Sylvia Plath had composed. I was not aware specific words were changed though. Please note Sylvia's daughter Freda arranged for the original order and contents of poems to be released. Please see: The Restored Edition Ariel. ISBN 978-0-571-23609-I. To note various drafts of the poems were made. There is an example of Ariel in the above book were you can see various notes and alterations.
@@marcusstoner1641 That's the exact version I have! Both versions of Medusa in the book are missing roughly a stanza from this recording. I'm not sure why that would be.
the editions read here are not the final versions. she made changes to them in the months between the BBC readings and her death. so the actual content of the poems was not changed by Hughes after her death, only the arrangement and selection, which was more than enough by itself lol

She did had her work edited for post mortem publication, but the version I have is "restored" still don't have it.
