Thanks for the video, excellent! But I have to say, from my point of view, having left the town (then a town, now a city) in March 1975 for pastures new, almost nothing is today recognisable! Many road names are of course familiar, but looking at the place some 47 years on, one realises that one knows and unconsciously navigates a place by familiar landmarks, buildings and their familiar facades, even familiar shop fronts etc! So many changes have taken place in this regard that most scenes appear unfamiliar to me now! Looking along the river, whilst it looks quite pleasant for riverside walks etc., when I was a boy, I recall it being packed with ships, moored 3 deep, loading and unloading cargo on the northern bank, whilst the south bank was also very busy but with ships undergoing light maintenance work, replenishment of stores etc. The south bank was a hive of activity with numerous small and larger workshops, supply businesses etc. It appeared to me as a chaotic scene but I guess it all brought in revenue! Whilst the riverside towards the piers looks very clean, pretty and orderly these days, all of that past activity was the lifeblood of a thriving town and back then the shipyards were still going strong. I used to drive past busy shipyards along the river heading for Pallion in the very early morning to work in my father's bakery on the corner of Westmoor Road and Tanfield Street, now a dwelling I believe. Sunderland's past 50 years or so is economically a melancholy tale I think, but I do hope the future holds better times for the city!
Hi Stewart, thanks for the excellent commentary. I fully agree that the city will have changed dramatically. As a visitor rather than a resident I don’t have your knowledge of the history involved. What I have tried to do in this film is capture a snapshot in time, which is already history. I can say that the landscape is evolving rapidly in the centre, urban redesign unveiling new roads, buildings, parks, community spaces and importantly going forward - hotels. I would say that Sunderland is definitely on the up. Regards!
I spent 2 miserable years at Redby Boys school in the early 1970s Sunderland was a bleak miserable dump then and after watching your video i can see nothing has changed .

This was just after lockdown when the hotels could reopen so I was fine. If stopped though I have immunity as a certified journalist gathering footage during a time of crisis, I always carry my press pass for just such occurences. :)

Thank you for this. I was a Community Work student in Sunderland in 1994. I really loved the place and its people. Sunderland deserves better. It needs investment both private and public but in covid wracked Britain where is this going to come from?
The city is definitely on the up, there are new developments in place and future ones happening. There are still a lot of dead streets though, I think it will be a marathon rather than a sprint.

What was the point of the video showing a miserable looking Foggy Sunderland? Next time if you do a video at least show one where there are people enjoying life at the Beach, like surfing or just enjoying the places in Sunderland. A video like this doesn`t encourage people to visit Sunderland.
Hi Brian, you have missed the point to my film. I’m not and never ever make tourist films promoting places. I explore and I film what I see. One day it was foggy, the next it was sunny and it’s all in there, including Roker Beach in the sunshine with people enjoying themselves. My filmmaking is about what I experienced in the limited time that I was there whilst aimlessly wandering around. Some may say it’s art, some may say it’s fart, but we’re all different and see things in our own way. Cheers.

A lot of regeneration is going on. Kickstarted by the government. Regeneration is happening in lots of other places too.
Ahhh nostalgic. When I was living there I missed India. And now that am here I miss that good ol town.
