That's really nice to say, Tee. I like to keep them at 15 minutes if I can. It feels so quick but I think short is better on these lists. Thanks for watching Tee.
Great video. I love your narration and the tone and intonation you use in your descriptions. This was a great list, I've played food chain magnate and I will definitely look for antiquity. I always wanted to try Agra, almost got it new for $19. I have Dominant Species and enjoy that with the right group. Gloomhaven is OK, I feel it is like programming a video game fighting monsters. I love Pax Pamir, it is a top 5 game of all time for me. I must try a Lacerda game, perhaps something I need to add to my collection. This was an amazing list of games. I will certainly follow your videos more often.
I'm glad you liked the video. Pax Pamir is now in my top 10 and possibly top 5. Just an amazing game. And if you enjoy heavy euros then definitely check out Lacerda. I've made playthroughs of Kanban EV, Weather Machine and Inventions, so you can check those out. I'd also look into the Gallerist and Lisboa. It can be hard to pick a first Lacerda game. Best to just jump into whichever one seems most interesting thematically. Thanks for watching!
What a great list. I haven't tried anything Lacerda yet and keep almost getting there but not quite. Super curious about the video you will make about them. Also, I'm curious what you think about Spirit Island. And ... if it ever comes up, I'd be so intrigued to see a tutorial playthrough of Pax Pamir because I've tried to wrap my brain around it, it is so elegant and beautiful (visually and game-design), and I'm still like not quite grokking it. Sort of how you described it. Your videos are frickin' awesome! Thanks for all the work you put into them.
I've got Kanban EV on the table just waiting to film once I get the time. I'm a bit busy so probably next week. Pax Pamir would be a good one, but I'm as baffled playing it as anyone. Maybe I could learn some strategy tips by playing solo. Thanks for the continued support and encouragement Christina!
Once I saw your number 10 I knew I was in for a fantastic list. If you haven't, I'd encourage diving into the pax series with Transhumanity and Renaissance. Arkwright is the only other game that I'd put in my room 10 that you didn't have. Great list and looking forward to checking out the rest of your list!
Thanks Aaron. Glad you enjoyed the video. I definitely have had my eye on the rest of the pax series, but never dived in. Arkwright nearly made the list but I need more plays. My couple plays were several years ago but I remember having a great time. Heavy economic games are tough for me to get to the table. I almost put Three Kingdoms Redux on the list, but again not enough plays. Thanks for watching!
I really like a lot of the games you did playthroughs on. Also love the way you do your playthroughs. I will give these games a closer look since I had a similiar taste in your past playthroughs.
Awesome! Thanks Tobias. If you give any of these a play, let me know what you think. I'd be curious to hear your thoughts. Thanks again for supporting the channel!
Lovely video, your pace and voice, along with all these pictures of the board make it very enjoyable. I want to invest in a crunchy euro and still a bit unsure which to pick. My games must have a theme i connect with, great board presence and player interaction and/or take that, which is important in our cutthroat group 😁 I'm contemplating Feudum at the moment, but im also mesmerised by Anachrony, especially since they glammed it up. Thanks for sharing your thoughts in this vid!
As a heavy board gamer have you tried 18xx type? So far I have tried 18cz and 1846. Both ‘lighter’ versions but I find those two very satisfying, 18cz especially has a decent 2 player version for when players are less available. Once your in them they are pretty straight forward rules wise but not choice wise, good stuff.
I have never really been drawn to war games either but I have been looking at the “coin” series games from GMT and they look awesome! They seem to tell a good story about the conflict that they simulate. Very deep and interesting strategy as well. Just a thought.
I definitely agree with you. COIN looks interesting and I even own a couple from an earlier attempt at getting into them. Kept putting it off. One day I hope to get this to the table with some friends. I'm not sure the solo is my kind of solo, but I could be wrong. Thanks XHuntinatorX!
@@TotallyTabled I felt the same way and bought Cuba Libre, but I have to say I was disappointed. The rule book is one of the most complicated I have ever come across and I have played far more complex games than Cuba Libre. I've probably now played Cuba Libre around 12 times because I wanted to make absolutely sure I'd given the game a chance. (This includes playing solo, which I wouldn't recommend as you have to manage 3 different factions which all have separate rules with a flowchart for each. I actually ended up drawing up my own flowcharts to make the process more streamlined, which did help, but I was still left feeling underwhelmed.)
Yeah, Liz, that is definitely too much AI upkeep for me! That is what has kept me away from solo. But with 4 players it looks like something I'd enjoy. The rules do seem intimidating. So many interesting games out there. Thanks for watching Liz!
@@TotallyTabled If you do buy a COIN game be interested to hear your thoughts. For me, Pax Pamir was so much better. It's everything I hoped Cuba Libre would be and wasn't.
@@whatyourgpdoesnttellyoupod2598 I have been considering coin games for a while too. The upcoming Red Dust Rebellion on GMT P500 looks like the one I will try out. It might be the game that introduces a wider audience to the coin series.
Ooh, 'Pax Pamir' is incredibly good. So good. Really, really good. Wakhan (solo) is good. I'm eagerly anticipating Cole's 'John Company' right now. 'Lisboa' is 100% fantastic--like, few will ever top it fantastic. Challenging to teach, but worth it. I desperately wanted the same from 'On Mars', but... uh... it just didn't land in the same way, even with the brilliant theme. For civilization games, we (two-player) *loved* 'Clash of Cultures Monumental'. If you haven't tried it, please do!
I've played the original Clash of Cultures and really liked it. I still need to try the new one. Pax Pamir and Lisboa are high on my to-do solo video list, probably with Pax coming very soon. One of my favorites of all time! Thanks Brian!
I'm very glad to hear that. I also have a bunch of playthroughs of heavy games like Robinson Crusoe, Frostpunk, Kanban, This War of Mine, Mage Knight, Inventions, and many more. Those are also great for seeing if a game is right for you. Thanks so much for watching!
Thanks Richard. I've wanted to try Churchill and Power Grid is one of those weird holes in my gaming experience. I've seen it played. I've even read the rules. Just never actually got it to the table. 18xx is not for me, unfortunately. I don't like the theme or gameplay enough to deal with the length and oppressive bookkeeping. Probably my most disliked gaming subgenre, honestly. Thanks for watching!
I was hoping nobody would remember that. 🫣 Yeah, that video has been put on the back burner, because I wanted to play a few of them solo a few more times. I would recommend the Gallerist as a great first Lacerda. Plays great at all player counts and solo is very easy to manage. If you aren't worried about complexity, I'd check out the one with the theme you most enjoy. Escape Plan is the only one I would avoid at first. I like it a lot, but it feels very different than his other games. Hope that helps! Thanks Eighty6d!
Do you have a video about all Vital Lacerda games and how you rank each one? So far, I could not find it but I did find your playthrough of a couple of them.
Ah, yeah, that is one of the several videos that has fallen through the cracks. I still play on making it, but I have a bit more homework to do. I like to play games a lot before putting them on lists and whatnot. And while I've played all the Lacerda games at least a dozen times, I've not played them all solo that many times. My current plan -- Inventions: Evolution of Ideas is on the way to my house (once all the ice melts). I will try to make that list after playing it and making a playthrough video. That should make a nice combo. But I can only promise "sometime in 2024." 😁 Thanks so much for checking out the list!
All Lacerda's on two? I do not mind the cheat but it is wrong ... On Mars for example is a lot heavier than Gallerist... there is a lot of difference between the Lacerda's. Your list is interesting, but mine is totally different, but that's to be expected, ask a 100 gamers and you'll have a 100 different lists. When it comes to Mindclash I find Trickerion a lot heavier than Anachrony. My list also contains Barrage, Praga Caput Regni, Trismegistus, Imperial Steam, Arkwright, Curious Cargo, and I agree with TTA.
Good list of game Pascal. Most I haven't played. Trickerion is great, but I do wish parts were streamlined a bit. Anachrony feels perfect to me. They just nailed it. Thanks for checking out the video!
I'm of course more into wargames ... but I would say that a lot of 18xx games are really not that complicated. A game like 1889 is even in the low end of medium. But in the genre you presented... Barrage would be a good candidate for a spot in the list.
Barrage is one I acquired during the pandemic and I haven't been able to table yet. Really excited to try it, looks right up my alley. The solo didn't seem appealing for some reason. Can't remember why. I really want to knock it out multiplayer. Thanks for checking out the video Peter!
@@TotallyTabled I'm not a solo player (actively dislikes it) ... so I can't speak to any objective solo experience - for me it's always dull. But Barrage has a refreshingly high level of player interaction.
Yeah, it definitely feels like the solo would suffer because it is so much about that player interaction. A very exciting looking design. I'm getting Brass vibes but that probably isn't exactly right.
Pretty good list! I’m very curious what about 18XX does not work for you? Clearly you don’t mind heavier games, but what about that subgenre doesn’t draw you in?
Sorry it has taken me so long to respond. This is a very good question. It is sort of a perfect storm of things I don't like: 1. trains as a theme does not interest me at all, in fact it often infuriates me; 2. economic games are not really my cup of tea, especially when I'm not really building or creating something that I care about; 3. the gameplay-to-bookkeeping ratio is WAY off. It felt like I would take one or two small actions and then 10 minutes of boring bookkeeping. It is so long with so little action and in one game we just "calculated" the final round because the gameplay had all dried up. Yikes. The design feels super rusty to me and I just don't get that excited about making slightly more money one turn to the next. I find the route building to be more interesting in something like Age of Steam. But that is just my taste -- similar arguments could probably be made against my beloved Lacerda games too. Thanks for watching!

You are correct bgm. I've never played HF. Talk about intimidating! I might not be serious enough for that one 😃. Maybe one day. Does it solo? Thanks for watching.
Not yet. Sorry. I keep pushing it back. Now I want to play Inventions: Evolution of Ideas and then make the list. I still need to play On Mars and Lisboa solo a few more times. But really they are all great and you can't go wrong. Thanks for watching!
Hi , you sayed you are going to do a seperate Vital Lacerda list but I can not find it , can you please tell me if you already did it and how i can find it ?
Sorry, I haven't done it yet. But if you watch my series of Top 50 games of all time, you will see my top 4. And I am currently working on a Weather Machine playthrough. I plan to do a review as well and discuss my rankings. Thanks Sabine!
@@TotallyTabled No worries I will follow and can't wait to see the Weather Machine playthrough , I got it in the Pledge of an other game so will get mine hopefully next year . I own Kanban EV and The Gallerist and I want to buy more of his Games but I watched a couple of reviews and it seems to me That On Mars is for now to heavy for me , so your review might help me to decide between Lisboa and Vinhos . the Top 50 games I have watched but I am still very interested in the review of all of them !
@@sabinebaurand471 You definitely can't go wrong. I have a soft spot for Vinhos because it was one of the first Lacerda I played and I've maybe played it as much as Kanban. I also love the theme. But Lisboa is probably the deeper and more interesting game. I find Lisboa heaver and harder to wrap my head around, which might be a good or bad thing depending on how you look at it. Lisboa also gets the nod as a solo game, but i haven't played either one solo all that much. I usually play them at 2. Both are great! Thanks Sabine!
@@TotallyTabled thank you so much for all your help , now I got a better Idea about Vinhos - Lisboa , I have watched playthroughs of both and I understand both and might end up getting both but Lisboa probable will be the next , and then I will see , Escape Plan I am not interested in and later once after playing the others I hope that will help to be able to understand On Mars and CO 2 . But I will deffo continue to follow reviews about his Games , well the good and helpful reviews like yours , he certainly is one of my favorite designer . Thanks again for the help and your great playthroughs and reviews
No, Madeira doesn't have an official solo mode that I know about, unfortunately. I bet you would enjoy most of the What's Your Game lineup. Good stuff. Thanks Nir!
Great choices. The problem I have been s not the complexity of a game but the rule book ! If the rules are logically laid out then a bit of time and effort will suffice. However, if the rule book is badly written ( mainly due to lazy translation ) then it becomes frustrating and eventually boring trying to " decipher" how best do I play this game without cheating ! Robinson Crusoe: Cursed Island (1at Ed) had my head spinning but I did so want to play it that I started writing notes with lots of ??? Did "this, that it the other make sense " ?......The answer was invariably no ! You may have guessed by now that I started playing a sort of " my own game " version ! Not a good idea at all because it can become a habit and a bad one at that. What helped ? Yes, watching UTube. Needless to say, some videos are better than others as are the ones explaining. Shaggi, you are calm and collected and that helps so much whearas there are others that talk fast, camera angles and audio problems to boot and " well, that is it ' attitude......I cringe at those. Congratulations for being the best. BTW: Yes, I lost again playing " This War of Mine " and not due to fighting this time but due to the cold and lack of food. Will try again next week 😊 Kind regards and more great games.
Thanks so much for the confidence boost! You are not alone struggling with rulebooks, especially Robinson Crusoe -- I still have nightmares! Adding poor translation to the mix. Yikes. Rules are definitely the number one obstacle to the board game hobby and I think UA-cam creators are essential to opening up the hobby to a greater audience and just making life easier for gamers. I hope I'm doing my small part. Thanks again and good luck with your next This War of Mine play. I'm rooting for you! :)
That's a tough question Richie. My first rec is to always try before you buy if you can, which can be difficult with these sort of games. With Lacerda I recommend the Gallerist if you want the easiest way in. If you don't care about weight then I would go with theme -- Kanban is my personal favorite but I feel like most people would go with Lisboa. You can't go wrong really. For Mindclash, I really love Anachrony. I haven't tried their newest game (I forget the name) but a strong recommendation for Anachrony if you like worker placement. Anachrony is overall probably the easiest to recommend for smaller player counts and the Gallerist or Kanban for higher player counts. Thanks for watching Richie!
I really like The Gallerist. It took me a couple of tries to understand the rules, and a couple more plays to understand what I wanted to do. I love it now. The theme is cool, and the art is really cool, all of it made by artists specifically for the game. Except for one sculpture. Scary scary bunny. :-) Many good play-through videos on The Gallerist.
@@TotallyTabled Toph here. I've got to chime in before my friend throws me under the bus. Brad just, well, doesn't appreciate the finer things in gaming. Great video! I'm really looking forward to your Lacerda list. I just haven't quite pulled the trigger on any of them yet but I want to at some point. Would be helpful to hear your opinion.
Thanks Evan. I'm glad you are interested in the Lacerda list. I'm currently working on a playthrough of Kanban EV which I hope will be out sometime next week. Hope you enjoy it!
@@TotallyTabled I'll keep an eye out for it!
You obviously don't own High Frontier. Otherwise it'd definitely be on your list! :)
You are correct bgm. I've never played HF. Talk about intimidating! I might not be serious enough for that one 😃. Maybe one day. Does it solo? Thanks for watching.
@@TotallyTabled Yes, it solos. There are solo rules for use with the core game and most of the modules. And a dedicated solo module is due out soon.
Hmmm, cool. I'll have to investigate further. Sounds interesting. Thanks bgm.
Hi. I couldn't find your Lacerda ranking.. did you make that video in the end? Thanks
Not yet. Sorry. I keep pushing it back. Now I want to play Inventions: Evolution of Ideas and then make the list. I still need to play On Mars and Lisboa solo a few more times. But really they are all great and you can't go wrong. Thanks for watching!
@@TotallyTabled Yeah, I know. I own On Mars, Vinhos, Lisboa. I just cannot wait to hear your opinion 😄
I love every Lacerda I played so far! Does Madeira have solo? Curious about this game. We have very similar tastes.
Will try again next week 😊
Kind regards and more great games.
Thinking about getting a Lacerda and/or Mindclash game, but not sure which one.
Any recommendations?
You and Toph will get along ! Hehe great list - Brad
That sounds like an insult. :) Thanks for checking out the vid Brad. Really appreciate it.
@@TotallyTabled not an insult we just have differing opinions on your #1 game 😂😂
@@BadatBoardgames Uh oh, them's fighting words! Well, good to know whose opinion to trust over there. :)
@@TotallyTabled lol 😂
@@TotallyTabled Toph here. I've got to chime in before my friend throws me under the bus. Brad just, well, doesn't appreciate the finer things in gaming. Through the Ages, in the limited play time that we've had, was too long and too difficult for him. I, on the other hand, appreciate fine game mechanics and the beauty that is TTA. Don't fear, I'm working on bringing to the right side of gaming. But, in the meantime, know that I've got your back in this duel. He is, after all, Bad at Board Games 🤣
I would guess that Magic The Gathering is the hardest card game and Go is the most difficult board game :)
So... Where is the separate Vital Lacerda list...?!?
Ha, it has been pushed back. I want to get a playthrough of On Mar and Lisboa on the channel first. So many games, so little time. Thanks for watching!
What do you think about pax pamir solo?
Btw putting all lacerdas at 2 should be considered as cheating 😂😂
Yep, sorry about the cheating AG Gar. :) I haven't played Pax Pamir solo, only several times at 4p and several times at 5p and maybe once 2p, if I remember correctly. People seem to want to see the solo mode, so I'm moving that up the to-do list. Thanks!
Golem?
Haven't played, but I want to! Thanks for watching!
Spirit Island is 🧠🔥
I agree! Thanks for watching!
"I don't play complex games, but these are the most complex games (that I play)." ?
I play a ton of heavy euro games, Chaos. I just don't play war games and I wanted to make that clear so I didn't get tons of messages about COIN, etc. Not sure I understand the problem.
"Through the Ages the number 1 most complex game? Bwahahahaha!", laughs Advanced Squad Leader, whose rulebook comes in a 2" thick binder...🤣🤣🤣
The list is my favorite games.
