Author here! Thanks Skal for everything! Skal fans- you should be real proud of yourselves. Best fans on you-tube with great questions and a sense of humor! Thanks for checking the video out and any of my books! Be sure to thank Skal!
Author here - One month from the video's release and Skalagrim and you guys were great. We did great on sales and this will enable me to put out more books, some of which cost me quite a bit to buy the scans of the art from museums. Thanks again for being supportive!
This book seems very interesting not unlike 'The Martial Ethic in Early Modern Germany' in that they provide the reader with all important context. I shall pick this up when I have the dough. :D
I'm starting Hema this fall. Very late to the game (I'm 26) but I want to learn all I can, so I've ordered the book and intend to begin absorbing everything I can.
All hail the tyrant Richard Marsden, one of my favorite people in the hema community. If any one wants to watch his clubs videos they are under swordpal on UA-cam!
I would love to pick this book up because I’ve watched Skallagrim for a very long time relying on his information he gives us, but even though he is very intelligent I would love to have knowledge of my own as well so I can really know about historical martial arts and the weapons and not be told information. I will pick it up soon when I get 60$.
I know this video is real old, but I feel this comment fits here and I’ll throw a Hail Mary; Have you heard that Ridley Scott (who gave us The Duellists) is directing “The Last Duel” about the (see title) last officially sanctioned duel-to-the-death in 14th Century France between Jean de Carrouges and Jacques Le Gris? With Scott at the helm, we have a somewhat decent chance that it will be pretty good considering his chops.
Thanks for the recommendations Skall. A somewhat similar book I own is 'A Storm of Spears' by Christopher Matthew. He talks about how the Greek Hoplite fought, techniques they used etc. It's a very interesting book, it's well worth a look.
Ooh, I've taken a lot of inspiration from HEMA for my last book, but all my research has been online. This would have been a great resource; if only I'd known about it sooner! I'd still like to read it just for fun, though. Thanks so much!
Richard Marsden well, something is something, I guess. I'm still amazed we don't show up a lot more often in this kind of books and/or videos. I mean, Templars have legions of fans for their decade-long crusades, we literally had a thousand year long crusade in the middle of Europe
Atticus Thank you kind sir for letting me know, I have only started learning English since the last 3 years, my main language is Chinese so please forgive me for my shit English.

Atticus i don't have a problem with English but for many things I only know the english term so it's hard to explain things to people who don't speak english and it's better to read something in the language you're most familiar with (in my case german) because there will be some things you don't understand even if you speak the other language (here english) fluently.
All I remember is, Katanas are stupid, Pumals are made of explosives, A jacket and long sleeve shirt will save u from a knife attack, jorge spearve is awesome, KCd is glitchy, and if I send you stuff you'll unbox it for me.
Please, my medieval wishlist can only get so long (or can it?). I'm mainly interested in Sword and Shield as well as Mace usage. Know anywhere I could learned more about those?
We have actually very little material on early sword and shield and mace useage. A few plates here and there. In the 1500-1600s, we have sword and rotella, but again, not tons of material.
Hey everyone ! Talking about books, i'm interested about one write by Richards Colin ; " Viking Sword and shield " Does anyone already bought it ? Or if you ever heard something about it I'll take it ! Thanks
Is there any historical martial arts that involve stomping on your opponents foot and shoving them to knock them over? Does that maneuver have a proper name?
wiktenauer.com/wiki/Nicolaes_Petter Not exactly, but this is a link to European wrestling that has a modern combat-flaire to it. Check it out, and you can see in detailed images a variety of techniques, some with the foot close, but not atop the opponent's foot.
you can find books/manuscripts that detail the actions enough to self-teach but any self taught action such as martial arts or sword play, has its down side, which is the transition from "forms" and "shadow boxing" to actual combat effectiveness please refer to this video by metatron for further explaination ua-cam.com/video/-oZvzjDHCTo/v-deo.html how ever, simply "trying it out" and going through trial and error with shadow boxing and sparring can result in some level of competency, especially if you invovle "heavy(full contact) sparring" and combat simulation, just dont expect to emerge from your self-training and be a badass though ofcourse you must use great care for safety oh hey! my next search turned up this vid from skall, so he touched on this topic aswell ua-cam.com/video/SOJQJQw5Glk/v-deo.html
Skallagrim I hope you read this, I have a question it’s about a certain sword in the game for honor that the hero Warlord uses, or at least it’s just the blade. The blade is call Gudbrand and it has a serrated edge, now I know how serrated blades or very practical for cutting but the way this sword is, is different in the way that the serrated blades are actually pointing towards the tip of the sword and I’m wondering would that still not be a great idea to have for a sword? I hope you see this cuz it would make and interesting video. Your awesome have a good day.
Likely not, but I may do a cheaper paperback! If enough pressure and interest came my way I could do kindle. HEMA is so niche, I need to be careful on price-point and quality!
Finally a book review! I was interested where you got some of your information about HEMA. I will definitely try this read! Only one question though...does it have images or concept drawings?
Is the knowledge of this book the reason you say "whom" instead of "who"? Cuz if so want it so i can study it until i edup saying "Whomst'd've" like a real gentleman 👌

HEMA is, as the name implies, is a form of martial art. That means sport and personal defense, as opposed to warfare. It would not be wrong to include techniques a soldier would have used, but it is neither common nor the focus.
RNJesus is wrong/spreading misinformation. HEME doesn't stand for "A Form of Martial Art", it stands for Historical European Martial Arts, and basically a very absurdly large umbrella term that covers everything from waving your hands around as a method of civilian self-defense, to stances, techniques, formations and tactics used in historical combat.
And let's not be too dumb/blind and remember that "combat" can be anything from a duel in an alleyway to a large-scale battle. Don't let RNJesus pull the wool over your eyes. I can tell (s)he knows much more than they let on and are deliberately trying to fool you. Russian bot?
As fascinated as I am by the book, a 60$ price tag seems a little high. I feel like for the size of the book, it would be better suited at around 20 to 30$
The price is high because I'm a small-time guy. I chose hardback, large size, and the most expensive color options I could get, which has all led to the 60 dollar price-tag. I may do a paperback to get a cheaper version, but no way could I get to 20 dollars even that route. The expensive color options for a small-time publisher is what is behind the high costs.
My book is hardback, best color I could afford, large size. A cheaper version that isn't hardback might come out, but the high-quality color keeps my prices high.

Now all we need is Metatron shouting about machicolations

Nope, I'm here for the beard...
It's a good place to grab and pull when your man is swallowing your sword.
wat
Atticus ...
Atticus: Yeah, I'll do that as soon as I decide if I should let go of my sword or my shield. It's a tough decision.
Oh Atticus, Great minds think alike my friend.

thank you so much for this recommendation! this will certainly be great for my research

Hundreds of sources in it for you!
HEMA is not only about Swordsmanship.
I love me some context.
Does it include Spanish "traditions" of XVII illegal street dueling, and the "special" rapiers we used, the "toledana"?
Alas no, being a broad history, it only skims over certain nationalities, but Spain does show up!
Richard Marsden well, something is something, I guess. I'm still amazed we don't show up a lot more often in this kind of books and/or videos. I mean, Templars have legions of fans for their decade-long crusades, we literally had a thousand year long crusade in the middle of Europe
A lack of source material for pre-Pacheco/Caranza material, including specifics, is our issue.
Does it teach you to end your foes rightly?
RuBiK Gaming of course.
Does it teach* - Your English capability is embarrassingly poor. You ought to be ashamed of yourself, you feather-headed, daggle-tailed fonkin.
Atticus
Thank you kind sir for letting me know, I have only started learning English since the last 3 years, my main language is Chinese so please forgive me for my shit English.
Does it teach you how to stop using old overused jokes?
2/10 unoriginal as fuck
I study HEMA with marozzo and manciolino books, but ancient italian is hard even for a native speaker
THE BIBLE OF HEMA
I don't know it that's a joke but Hema is far far out of the context of most medeval technics sooo... yea

Yes I do
Sounds interesting, have to look for a German version
No, you really don't. Learn some English.
"Stuff your language elsewhere", he said ... in English ... Atticus smirked and nodded in glee.
"wofür sie besonders schwärmt, wenn es wieder aufgewärmt"

Sounds great!
Skall what’s your opinion on Damascus steel?
What books should I get for actual techniques?
What about pommel throwing though?
Are there training books for teaching yourself to train? Because there's no HEMA club near my home.
you can find books/manuscripts that detail the actions enough to self-teach
but any self taught action such as martial arts or sword play,
has its down side, which is the transition from "forms" and "shadow boxing"
to actual combat effectiveness
please refer to this video by metatron for further explaination ua-cam.com/video/-oZvzjDHCTo/v-deo.html
how ever, simply "trying it out" and going through trial and error with shadow boxing and sparring
can result in some level of competency, especially if you invovle "heavy(full contact) sparring"
and combat simulation, just dont expect to emerge from your self-training and be a badass
though ofcourse you must use great care for safety

Any chance of a Kindle edition?
Likely not, but I may do a cheaper paperback! If enough pressure and interest came my way I could do kindle. HEMA is so niche, I need to be careful on price-point and quality!
Haven't watched your video for the last 1-2 years. Nice to see you've gone back to having some hair on your head. It suits you!
Is there any Viking martial arts in the book or not?
Not much, the main thrust of the book is between 1300 and 1750 with a few outliers. Holmgang is mentioned, but not the main part of the book.
Lol, I'd imagine it has the "end him rightly" technique.
Which is obviously the best.
Finally a book review! I was interested where you got some of your information about HEMA. I will definitely try this read! Only one question though...does it have images or concept drawings?
It has historical art and modern HEMA people.

Cuz if so want it so i can study it until i edup saying "Whomst'd've" like a real gentleman 👌

is there an e-book version of the book?
Not yet, just the hardback so far.
In hema, there are different techniques for duel and army combat?
Or there's not that much of of a difference between the 2?
Comparable to the difference between a personal marksmanship test and live-fire combat, yes.
HEMA is, as the name implies, is a form of martial art. That means sport and personal defense, as opposed to warfare. It would not be wrong to include techniques a soldier would have used, but it is neither common nor the focus.

is this going to be translated ? i think i would have trouble reading a scientific book in english
At the moment, no. The book is done with the idea of popular history behind it and you may do fine.
Cool. Is it translated in any language, at the moment?
Not as far as I know.
Hi skal! how are you doing?
As fascinated as I am by the book, a 60$ price tag seems a little high. I feel like for the size of the book, it would be better suited at around 20 to 30$
The price is high because I'm a small-time guy. I chose hardback, large size, and the most expensive color options I could get, which has all led to the 60 dollar price-tag. I may do a paperback to get a cheaper version, but no way could I get to 20 dollars even that route. The expensive color options for a small-time publisher is what is behind the high costs.

I would also add the german link, because we seem to be a big part of his viewers

If someone made a book about the best scam artists in history, would it be a Historical Con Text?
Do they describe which techniques are especially effective when dueling samurai?
Tycini1 Only if there is a chapter on the Portuguese.
If that's the case it'll read like,
Show up to a Japanese port.
Get drunk.
Insult a Samurai.
Challenge him to a duel.
Kill him with a Rapier and dagger.
Be banned from the island.
In such case I am obligated to ask you a question:
Does your way of thinking happen to be inspired by some historical sources?
Tycini1 Yeah, the Portuguese had a trade agreement in the 16th century but fights between Portuguese Sailors (using Rapiers and daggers) and Samurai first banned Portuguese from carrying weapons in Japan and eventually ended the trade agreement.
No one knows for sure how much the Portuguese won these duels but a common thought is the Japanese (a warrior culture) wouldn't have banned them if they had been winning so the losses must have been exceptionally one sided.
As you may be aware of, I knew this story before in one way or another. It's a real shame there are no documents confirming this.
Tycini1 Just parry and their katana will bend into a pretzel
