Title should be "The 2024 Ultimate Browser PRIVACY Tier List" - As a heads up to folks that might waste a bunch of time -- He doesn't speak of any of the features that each of the browsers present in terms of productivity that makes one app stand out over the other. Which if you've done your research on each of these browsers, you'll know that specific features that one app has, could enhance your entire browsing experience.
Vivaldi if u want features. Thorium if u want speed. Tor or Mull browser if u want privacy (but dont modify anything else u will stand out from other users). For mull browser u have to use mullvad vpn (or ivpn) to match tor browser (and exceed, imo, because tor exit nodes are often compromised)
It makes me so happy that you gave Google Chrome an F. I've always HATED this browser for so many reasons. I've never been able to figure out why people seemed to love it so much. My favourite browsers have been Firefox (although, that relationship pretty much ended a few years ago; still have it installed and use as a 'backup' now and again for certain things), currently using Brave but just this morning, I started thinking about checking out some other browsers as it's been a few years since I've done any research on what's available. That's how I just found this video. Very thorough and informative; thank you :) I've just downloaded Tor and will be trying it out for awhile to see how we 'get on'. I've known about Tor for quite some time but had just never taken the next steps of downloading and using. Thanks again for all the research you put into making this video.
You really shouldn't be calling it an ultimate tier list if you're basing it purely on security and privacy. There's more to browsers than that, despite how important those aspects are.
As a Librewolf user, I can't really agree with the criticism you levied against it, or the poor rating. The installer does offer an updater and it can be set to run whenever a user boots. Autoupdates are important, sure, but much more in critical work environments than for single users; all it takes is a bit of self discipline to check for updates once every few days, not the end of the world. While hardened Firefox does offer similar security benefits, it requires extra steps to modify vanilla Firefox that an end user may be unable or simply unwilling to do; Librewolf comes hardned out of the box. Lastly, Librewolf is current in regards to codebase. I used to use Watefox but migrated after its debacle. As you yourself mentioned, WF being based on ESR codebases is a massive demerit, despite its long track record.
Dude, I really don’t understand how you’re putting Safari in tear and you decided to put that graphing chromium VS right above it. Proprietary or not it’s built-in to the most popular phone on the planet and you’re saying it’s worse than all of those while flaunting how important privacy is…. That's true Functionality wise Edge is one of the best browser out there. But again this list is based on privacy and Edge is just a spyware when it comes to that.
ok, but if it is BAKED into my computer, SPIES everything i do AND is generally a HASSLE to disable because it tries to be the default app in everything.
Personally I like edge. It's great for reading purposes and does some translation of sentences of look up meaning of words on the side pane on right. Pretty neat when wanting to learn new words while reading without bothering to open another tab.
Librewolf and Ungoogled Chromium are my favourite for daily driving, they are both relatively minimal (not bloated), open source, and have private defaults.
The easter egg in the Thorium browswer was a lot more amusing to me than concerning (as easter eggs like that should be). What concerns me about it, was something that also was shown in the XZ utils chain of events. If that easter egg was a problem to the community, and the community was analyzing source code, as they claim happens; they would have raised the issue within hours of it going up. If it were simply an attack on the developer, without any true interest in the easter egg; these community checks could possibly still be occurring. However, the XZ utils backdoor was only found by the eyes a very specialized professional developer -- indicating, a second time, that there are no community eyes on these projects.
Huge disagree with edge. It's the fastest browser and customisable in terms of privacy, plus you can run a script on PC to disable all the spyware crud.
@@ZÏ̇̃ Vanilla Firefox is defiantly below vanilla librewolf Firefox with a custom user config sure I can see as being the same tier as Librewolf but not out of the box
Waaaaay too much emphasis on privacy and almost zero to none in other categories. There is nothing wrong with that, but name your list ''security tier list'' and not ''Ultimate tier list''... not everyone is a paranoid terrorist
For use with my personal information I agree mostly with the list. Sadly as Dev, I have to keep things like Edge, Chrome, Safari and at least two others around for doing work.
Not only as a dev, I would add. Professional use in general you unfortunately need Chrome because a lot of websites and tools will sometimes not even work in Firefox
Tor isn't for daily use. It's much slower and blocks many elements to achieve the level of anonymity it has. It's not a replacement to Brave, more like a complementary browser
for Apple users, does Safari have a problem showing certain websites in read-only format? mine does. I have to use Google Chrome on all my Apple devices.
I use Microsoft Edge because Firefox based browsers are really choppy dragging tabs around, and because it's the only browser I've found that has an option to make the UI bigger in the form of Touch Mode (Only available in Canary and Dev builds for some reason). I never expected to like Microsoft Edge, but after heavy customization, it's become my daily driver. Except for privacy. My browser history has been Chrome to Opera GX to Opera to Vivaldi to Floorp to Microsoft Edge.
This entire video is basically privacy focused. For anyone who actually wants to use good browsers: Best privacy and speed: librewolf Best speed: brave (or edge if you don't care about privacy) Best of all: Firefox.
The absence of Iridium browser, and a few others undermines the integrity of your list. You made some good points though... I don't agree with your tier list, but, thank you for introducing me to some new browsers, it was fun experimenting with these alternatives.
Can we get a tier list for people who don’t care about privacy over the internet? I know you were upfront about it but most privacy isn’t the only feature people care about, e.g. I like OperaGX because it’s makes it easy to limit the RAM/CPU usage of the browser. I was hoping this video would be more about those sorts of features and not 100% about privacy since I feel like the browser breakdown regarding that is 1. TOR if you know you definitely need guaranteed privacy 2. Anything else. But idk maybe I’m just a normie
i use chrome juste because of the features and i use a lot of the google app, i don't care about privacy on internet i have nothing to hide. I guess try each one and choose the one that has the best features and experience for you

@jonaharagon I have always used Firefox (i'm not very educated in the software like you are) but should i use google as the search engine along side Firefox? Do I need to download anything or something different apart form a say a VPN to make my use of Firefox more private? Google as a search engine is not as good as it used to be so i have been using Perplexity AI more often to find useful information. Thanks for making the video.
Hello! I would definitely stay away from Google if privacy is a concern for you. I hadn't heard of Perplexity AI before, it seems interesting but as you probably know, many people are mistrustful towards AI. I mainly use Brave's search engine Brave Search, but I use DuckDuckGo for finding images. If you want a traditional search engine, those two would be my recommendations! As for making Firefox more private (or 'hardening' it), I know there are steps you can take to make it more private, but I just use LibreWolf since it's essentially hardened Firefox out of the gate with less effort, so I can't help you with that unfortunately. Best of luck on your browsing adventures, friend!
After ublock stop working on chrome i stop using it.. Also Opera sucks too , i thought it'd work with ublock but recently it stopped working. Not only that, it often prevent you to upload images.
Why is Firefox "hardened" marked as a separate browser in tierlists like this? If you have to make such big loopholes under the hood in order for Mozilla's marketing to be true, then that browser does not have good privacy protection. Average people will not deal with such a thing, because it is nerve-wracking in the first place. Considering that, I have no idea how Brave could be in a worse tier list.
Default firefox is like edge in privacy. Bloated, poor anti tracking, no anti fingerprint etc. I would recommend librewolf, zen or waterfox as you said nobody is going to tweak the browser manually or downloading a config file
If your tier criteria was functionality above privacy, your list would literally flip upside down, cmon man, proprietary browsers are not objectively bad by the lack of privacy, Microsoft Edge is one of the most complete and resourceful browsers out there, even though it's sending some of your data to Microsoft, you ranked Vivaldi just above the worst tier because bits of it's source code is closed?
i want to know too. i need one for my old notebook. Firefox is pretty slow, and brave is even faster than chrome. So seeing these two in same tier makes no sense, brave is definetly better.
Edge and Safari with ublock (all filters) and your own browser settings. They are the only ones that give you the highest quality in streaming Netflix / Amazon for all browsers.
At this point in time, Brave should be the only choice for normies. Its not he best, but it has the least bloat, least resource greedy and best privacy focus{for now} of all browsers.
it's very buggy, i switched from opera gx to brave purely cause opera was buggy, but it turns out it is just as buggy, firefox is the least buggy for me rn, but i've only been using it for a few weeks
@@handleOfParabellum08 Since i commented on this video i've tried many browsers, the one i am using currently is WaterFox with the Simple Tab Groups extension (an essential for most FireFox based browsers tbh), which has been a decent experience so far, i've encountered 0 bugs but it doesn't have automatic tab unloading so it uses A LOT of ram since i open HUNDREDS of tabs at a time. also it has a setting to autohide and show the address bar, bookmark bar, and tab bar on hover, which i really like. A browser i've been wanting to switch to is Zen browser which is also FireFox based and has the same autohide feature as WaterFox, the browser is quite new so it's probably gonna be buggy sometimes, but the only bug i encountered is that when you turn on compact mode (it lets you enable the autohide feature) and also turn on "automatically expand tabs by default" at the same time, if you push your cursor to the left the tab bar appears and disappears continuously, but that can be easily avoided by just not pushing your cursor to the left extreme on your monitor. It has tab unloading, and has some of the features that Simple Tab Groups has but built into the browser and faster (it has workspaces but they dont get backed up into a file daily like the Simple Tab Groups extension), the reason i haven't switched completely and have only been using it on and off is that it has a couple features that i would like to understand how to use before switching to it, but that's just me, you can use it like a normal browser. Chrome got an update which sorts your tabs into groups with AI which i find very convenient but i haven't tested it since it is for people that have an 18+ google account that also live in the USA, if you need chromium then this is the browser you'll get the least bugs on. If you're looking for my recommendation then it is definitely Zen or maybe if you want a more simple and flawless experience then go with WaterFox, Zen, or basically any FireFox based browser with the with the Simple Tab Groups extension. This might have a couple of grammatical or punctuation errors or since it took me a while to type all of this out and i cannot be bothered to reread it and correct it multiple times💀 Also i noticed we're born the same year (08) that's cool lol
Your reaction to thorium is very unjustified and you are spreading misinformation. It is not a dead project. Updated last week, the +-a month of inactivity was due to hospitalization of the main dev. It is relatively up to date, so saying you will get hacked if you use it is absolutely not true. It is more frequently updated than Waterfox and includes some hardening and security tweaks. The furry thing was an easter egg which opened up a furry picture if you specifically did a sequence of actions, leftover from when it was a smaller fork. It was a suggestive picture, but no nudity. While potentially in bad taste, it has since been removed. The “legally questionable pictures” were part of a personal anti-forced-circumcision activism page which were never part of the source code of the browser, but were rather hosted on the repository of the website of thorium instead of on their own private page. This shouldn’t have happened, and the author (being a young individual making mistakes) has apologized for it and has learned from their mistakes. But it wasn’t illegal material.
@@jonaharagon I’m sorry, you are correct about the last update being 3 weeks ago. I was going off memory, and I should have checked it before I commented. @@jonaharagon it's now updated to v122 , also the whole Drama is sorted, explained, author apologized in blog, nothing project-ending note that the same author makes browser Mercury which is Firefox ESR fork but with some extra fixes (including from hardened FF forks) both Mercury and Thorium have some for-privacy changes, security hardening patches (fixes from newer builds), contains UBO so the bias due to drama made others to overlook that difference/improvements (while it's posted and visible in the code/change-log/website) maybe for next update of the list, introduce also category E so you can spread it more fairly

I had to use Edge the other day and after just 5 minutes I felt like I was transported back 20 years ago when I didn't know much about PCs and often ended up clicking everything on the internet using a crappy browser, leading to constant shady pop-ups. That's what the default Edge experience is like. Absolutely disgusting!
I've been using edge now for few months and this is absolutely not the case. After customizing it to my liking it has been far better than any other Chromium browser I've used. absolutely no popups.
It's ironic all the security holes chrome has yet ChromeOS is prevalant in Cyber Security workplaces. How do you personally feel about ChromeOS itself?
I would say unlikely. The privacy trade-offs up to that point are already higher (unless you play offline games exclusively). That being said, as a gamer myself, Opera isn't as good as it seems. My personal recommendation is to pick one of 2 routes, more security/privacy or more convenience. Use one of the S-B tier browsers for your gaming browser, OR take the convenience that comes from edge and co-pilot (this is what I did) that way I can hit the windows key during games and instantly search or instantly use co-pilot to ask a question about the game! Hope this helps.
Recently switched from Chrome to Pale moon, I love the Skeuomorphic design of it and speed isn’t that much of an issue, it’s not that slow + i would sacrifice one second for a better GUI and more customizations. I still use chrome sometimes, I still haven’t logged in any accounts of mine in pale moon but once im more familiar and comfortable with it i will. oh also safari isn’t that bad. sure it tracks it’s user (pretty much like most browsers) but using safari is probably the best option if you are on iOS. Better to get tracked by one company than two imo..

Addons are still an issue, because Pale Moon will never support WebExtensions, but since you can use old firefox extensions, it may still end up a bit useful
Performance is probably the best thing it has going for it, because it will run great even on low end computers, and it will also not eat up your RAM and CPU.

Brave (on Linux) blocks so much tracking that I can’t use it to connect to some of my financial institutions. It also has built in TOR connectivity so I would definitely rank it higher than Firefox, though I don’t know if the Windows or Mac versions do the same things. The IOS version does not connect to TOR.
The Windows version does have Tor built in.
You really shouldn't use Tor in brave. The whole point of Tor is the be anonymus, and you are not getting that in brave's knockoff version
Crippling accessibility and useability is a disadvantage, not an advantage. So Brave should be lower than Firefox.
That depends on how aggressive your ant-tracking settings are. I have not had an issue wirh Brave on Windows or Linux.

10:52 Vivaldi isn’t closed source, vastly open source, and the rest is source available. Plus, being open source doesn’t automatically make it a better option, open vs available vs closed source is comes down to a matter of transparency. Treat everything, including open source software as guilty until proven innocent.
Great video thank you for all these detailed information for each browser! I'll be probably switching to Brave from Chrome.
Which is best for low end PC/laptop to have running while gaming?
ungoogled or thorium

If its not de-googled, it shouldn't be on that list.
I use Librewolf btw
I use NixOs btw
Iam also use librewolf ❤

Many many examples of this beyond these two, just look into NPM and PyPI supply chain attacks. It is a big problem.
Huge disagree with edge. It's the fastest browser and customisable in terms of privacy, plus you can run a script on PC to disable all the spyware crud.

Did not even want to mention most personal information from banks or healthcare is on AS400, Java Apps (pre-2010), etc...

What about Ghostery Private Browser, where would you place Ghostery Private Browser?
I think that you obviously value privacy above anything else. Your list wasn't on how good the browser is, just how safe it is.
because how good is super subjective and almost all of these browsers are just chromium or firefox with some small differences.
Floorp? What is this, Rick and Morty?

This entire video is basically privacy focused.
For anyone who actually wants to use good browsers:
Best privacy and speed: librewolf
Best speed: brave (or edge if you don't care about privacy)
Best of all: Firefox.

Google Chrome, placed in the actual bottom tier: Unworthy of Attention
@jonaharagon I have always used Firefox (i'm not very educated in the software like you are) but should i use google as the search engine along side Firefox? Do I need to download anything or something different apart form a say a VPN to make my use of Firefox more private? Google as a search engine is not as good as it used to be so i have been using Perplexity AI more often to find useful information. Thanks for making the video.
You could give duckduckgo search a try
Cromite is almost strictly better than Brave, it should be A.

Also Opera sucks too , i thought it'd work with ublock but recently it stopped working. Not only that, it often prevent you to upload images.
Google Chrome should be in "G" tier (pun intended).

This might have a couple of grammatical or punctuation errors or since it took me a while to type all of this out and i cannot be bothered to reread it and correct it multiple times💀

But it wasn’t illegal material.
lol the latest release (3 weeks ago!) still uses Chromium 121, and everything I said about it was accurate, sorry!
@@jonaharagon I’m sorry, you are correct about the last update being 3 weeks ago. I was going off memory, and I should have checked it before I commented. Dumb question. Is there a risk to using Opera GX if you only use your PC for gaming? All purchaches are made via steam cards on steam.
Great point on the games themselves being a risk. The whole reason I limit my gaming PC, to just gaming.
