Why haven’t they been given knighthoods yet ?! Contribution to music and British culture, one of the few bands every knows, loves, sings along with and dances to, seriously need to start a campaign !
The coolest dancing I have ever seen!. I’ve always loved Madness, but this to me is what I remember most fondly. Fresh on the scene, the whole 2-tone/SKA period was just golden. As a 15 year old, I remember everyone at school just turning up one day wearing green parkas with Madness, The Beat, The Specials, Selecter patches on them. Long Summer days and warm nights with mates, thinking I would be 15 for the rest of my days.
Same here mate, great days. Had patches all over my Harrington & school bag. But I was 9 year old when I first got into them in 79’. My Madness ‘M’ tattoo is looking a little weathered these days though 😂
I remember in a disco early 80s Madness songs came on I done a Chas dance I won a Madness tape cassette I didn't even know I was in a dancing competition True story
Me to had the pleasure as a chauffeur driving chas smash in 2009 they were playing Victoria park east London he gave me a free backstage pass when they done this song 30 years after recording it I had tears of joy in my eyes they were bang on point they were absolutely brilliant one of the greatest bands to come out of the United Kingdom
Amazing in respect of how did they manage to get that sound, those great songs, all nicely packaged and they were so young, they could play their instruments too! I mean One Step Beyond, I don't think there's a bad song on it, masterpiece. They were a blast of sunshine back in the late 70's, during the remnants of Punk, New Wave, Disco and Heavy Metal. This has grown to be my favourite track. A part from the great melody, there's a story there, of compassion, friendship, life's ups and downs. Perfect. Sax is brilliant.
I’m trying to replicate chas’s moves😂. I’ve got the hat and everything. I’m off out up town to show these dipsticks how it’s done. Wish me luck people because this might not go down well
As a teenager of the 80s madness we're my group still have all the singles the albums the picture discs couldn't wait to go to woolworths and buy their singles .I was in there one day and I'd never heard baggy trousers they played it and it and how fantastic was it ...as were all their tracks . Saw them loads in the 80s ..... Great , happy times love you guys ...... get chas back please 🙏
they played madstock live on radio nova ireland this afternoon, made my day on a boring drive to drogheda!! no ads and not a mention of covid 19, selfie videos, the new normal or any other SHITE!! thanks nova...
I grabbed a Selecter tape from a bargain bin. The next day I bought all the Ska tapes ..Then I scoured Record stores for all things Two Tone. I was tired of Mtv force feeding me David Lee Roth and Madonna.....Reggae fever all through the 90's . Worldbeat and Cuban...Now I revisit vintage Progressive . Ska is my favorite. My band did not cover them though...we stuck to up-beat Reggae, XTC, Paul MacArtney, Rundgren...never had strong enough Brass...
Chas' dancing often copied but never as good. This was when he was first joining the group as a full time member.. first album cover doesn't have him on. Brilliant song.
Suggs singing voice then had a different pitch and a genuine accent. In the early 80s it changed, mostly by becoming an inauthentic disguise of the accent. His singing voice there is no better or worse than it has been since. Thanks for uploading - awesome stuff
Their first album was all 100% ska. Then after “Our House”, they became a ska oriented pop band. The music and the style of singing changed. This always happens.
Dame. I use to listen to this in my living room growing up as a kid with my older brothers. Along with other great vinyl albums of those times. I was 9 years old in 1979. Devo and Zapp were my favorites too. Sometimes I miss being a kid. Sometimes.😉
SPECIALS...The SELECTER MADNESS...The ENGLISH BEAT...many dudes wearing Porkpie hats at colleges Inda early 8O's...influence Ofdose across the Pond Ska bands... Suggs MacPherson & C. Smash...fashion mavens
It was Top of the Pops on a Thursdays night, The Specials played, it must have been their debut. Madness played also and danced into the audience. Friday morning at school, we didn't know what had happened but we all knew something big had happened. The rest as they say is history but for us it was such a very special time.
However good the song is, it’s not strong enough to be a single. Maybe a B side. Also, look at the charts. What was that song competing against? Some UK post punk and pop bands, but mostly American overproduced singles. Like Michael Jackson or Toto.
A few years back, my girlfriend, who now lives in Haarlem - note second a - did a great Chas Smash dance for a North London friend of hers who had previously refused to believe there were Yank Madness fans. And meanwhile I was doing the appropriate "Don't watch that, watch this". Too bad they'll never make it over here except in the very unlikely event of their enshrinement in Cleveland.
Brilliant, the urban culture change that Madness and the whole 2 Tone scene bought in cannot be underestimated. Fashion ,attitudes and influence still resonate. I remember seeing this clip on Tv. a few years later and the guy introduced it and said “ This is Madness from 1979 and Suggs has been styled by The Salvation Army”. Ha
We always took the rise out of Terry , said he was he was the Breakfast man , he would get humpy and insist he weren’t nothing to do wiv the Fekin song , he still lives on to all in Chalk Farm , Kilburn etc etc & at Chelsea as the B&B man ,
it hard to believe that such a great performance,( technically, musically, etc.) can be ruined by such a bad mix. I get the impression they did it on purpose (or at the very least, didn't give them any time for a sound check) to bands they didn't respect?
Why haven’t they been given knighthoods yet ?! Contribution to music and British culture, one of the few bands every knows, loves, sings along with and dances to, seriously need to start a campaign !
Couldn't agree more 👍👍👍
Nope. Lord Suggs, Baron Kix and Baronet Barso. Etc. 😸

I love the way madness would change key in songs very talented and great songwriters very catchy melodic tunes 👌

Can feel in the album a true British classic god bless madness
and the dancer is just so cool fantastic

I'll guess you got a hoofing, but I hope I'm wrong!
Ah the old grey whistle test and whispering Bob Harris, had brilliant bands on. Madness one of the best, love Chas.....
Still sounds and looks ace in 2023👍
Thank God for UA-cam,where else would you see such classic stuff.
Thank God for the BBC and their policies towards the arts. The old grey whistle test had some fantastic acts - some real classics over the year.
Lol their dancing is the cure for cancer
How's about some love for Lee Thompson, saxophonist extraordinaire! One genius amongst 7, seems like he's always the bridesmaid & never the bride. xo
Best Madness track by far imho, pure Madness, should have been a single. My go-to track, takes me right back.

I got their first album as a christmas present. Age 14, the music helped keep us goin coz merseyside in late 70’s early 80’s was fucked.
Fuck me young and no fear saw them dec 14 again still indefatigable
Lee Thompson is awesome. That's it, really.
The dancing just broke my swagometer!!
Glad I found this! Kix is The Best😎

Que lindo !!! Em 1979 eu tinha apenas 11 aninhos.
They look so young! .... and they were ... as was I. Alas, we're not so young these days.
thanks so much for uploading this one... It's one of my favs, and live! wow.

Seen chas, cool as fuck
Thanks for the nutty sounds of Madness the best sound around..... One step beyond 😎
When posting a video from last century it would be wise to include the full name of the band so those of us in this century know who it is.
No me canso de escucharlos ! A tope con Madness
Eso es buenísimo Bro
Legends....
Staggering how talented Lee Thompson was, even at this early age!!
Bloody awesome Band!
There's another great version of this song from the John Peel Sessions.
great performance !
I wish Suggs never changed his dance moves! Now he sucks

never understand why this was not released as a single

Last time I watched an old Madness live video was a long time ago, so I'm a bit surprised by Suggs bad singing. I still love this though.
He was only a teenage apprentice learning on the job in 1979.
The "staple of life" .....just like 'eggs bacon, beans, and a fried slice' ....but don't quote me on that!👍👍

Love their early stuff!. Fifty plus and can still 'Ska dance!'🤣 Nuff said.

It’s good to see them as a band. Now they seem so distant to each other.
