When is and Was a Real Boy came out, they were severely underrated, imho. I think this album is just the same. In a few years, I think, especially fans will really embrace it for what it truly is, very similar to what happened with Brand New's Daisy album

Max Bemis is just growing older as a human being, so his music grows with him. I love it cuz it shows his story with every album after the last. It's not about the genre or the sound, but the meaning behind every lyric is what i listen to. Not to mention he wrote over a thousand songs that's on the youtube right now. Hidden treasures among youtube. ^~^

i think the only reason i was in any way dissapointed by this album is because i came into it expecting the same old say anything that ive always loved. initially i was dissapointed. but coming back to it knowing what it is(just a little bit different) i completely love it. its still amazing. you just have to look at it for what it is instead of what its not or what you were expecting it to be.

What it comes down to, is people have different tastes. Some people want to hear Max's angsty songs about girl problems. Some people like the songs with the uppy beats and happy vocals. The great thing about Say Anything and Max Bemis is that they cover ALL of these ranges and they have songs for everyone to enjoy. If you're feeling down, there are songs for that. If you want a happy song about love and romance, there's songs for that. With that said, I love, and will always be a Bemis fan

Starting to agree with you now man, I'm finding myself skipping 90% of the tracks from the last 2 albums and desperately scouring youtube for some undiscovered demos of their older stuff

I've been listening to them since IARB and then went back to listen their old songs, which were filled with heartache, and lyrical genius. I believe Max's lyrics have evolved in the same way his life has; as his life gets better, his songs get happier, which results in different sounding songs. I'm a long time fan and can't wait to see these guys tomorrow at Hollywood!

I haven't listened to Say Anything in a while and I didn't realize until I heard him sing that I miss the dude! It felt like something was missing from my life and now I know what it was. It's musicians like Max Bemis that help us awaken and feel alive.

Your honesty is admirable but at some point Max Bemis is going to hear this. Give him some inspiration, he's came through more than often! It does need to be said though and his songs aren't bad.. you can't beat him up too much. I think he still has that raw feel to his music but the "Is a real boy" and "Was a real boy" albums were my favorite when it came to his raw thought process. Each album has some of my favorites and I love Max Bemis

You can say that about there older work too. There is just as much quality in this as before and your opinion on that doesn't matter. Whether you "Like" it or "relate" to it doesn't change it.

i think i just havent embraced this album the same why i did the others, i know i will eventually, like with the last one, it took me a while, but now im completely in love with it. From the first play though i fell in love with 'so good', 'admit it again' and 'peace out'. theyve released so many great songs in only a few albums, that even if they only ever released crap after defense of the genre, id still consider myself a huge fan! just my thoughts on the new record, peace and love to all!

  • @Toastytop

That's because they wanted to go in a new direction with it, and if you're a true fan of the band you'd notice how many different styles they play with with their music, every one of their albums sounds different than the last, there's nothing wrong with exploring their creativity, you should welcome it, it shows they're growing as artists.

I personally enjoyed this album, you have to take in account that he's trying to get used to the fact he can write anything he wants. He spent a majority of his career getting told he cant do this and that with his music. Once he settles into this new era of say anything he will relax a lot more and we all will be graced by more amazing music that will concrete their way into our hearts and souls.

I'd say the quality is still as good as ever, the lyrics and sentiments have just progressed away from teenage angst and apathy. Still, none of the recent stuff comes close to "You help them/Mystery Rash/ But a fleeting illness".

I just got back into Say Anything as I lost touch with their music after the self titled album. I've absolutely loved this album in the past couple of months but this song is not on it.....at least not my stupid Spotify version.
I gave Hebrews a few listens too but that album hasn't clicked with me yet. I'll be listening to Anarchy for at least another month if not longer, then I'll give Hebrews and the remaining albums a chance too.

Gave this album a chance, Im still giving it a chance, heck ill never stop giving it a chance. Say anything is my hands down most favorite band of all time but I cant wrap my head around the sound of this new album.Aside from the less angry lyrics (which is not the reason i dont like it) the sound of the instrumentals and his voice are so different. Idk sigh... hopefully someday ill grow to like it.

I have to agree, until this album, I could honestly say I LOVED every song, but, then I heard the song "Their Notions". It made me feel sick, that Max could actually write shitty, and I was disappointed in a few others from this album, but I still appreciate them, and the album, I think I can be forgiven for skipping a song or two. :P Say Anything, is without a doubt, my absolute favorite band, for the sheer fact that I can relate so much to their songs.

I know these comments are from forever ago, how do you feel about them now? I still love them, the break up was super sad. But yeah, I remember really not liking this album that much, especially after the self titled, which was such a gnarly record. It's still "good", because it's Max, but it's definitely not up to his normal standards. I think a lot of it comes from the guitar playing, a lot of the "main tracks" on this album are lacking the whacky wonky guitar parts from the first few albums - it's mostly 4/4 1-2 straight up acoustic strumming. That's how I remember a lot of it anyways lol. Hebrews was an excellent return to form, and I'm still trying to digest the newest one lol.

I love this album just as much as all their other stuff. Sure it's a little bit different but it's still Say Anything, still Max's amazing voice and song writing, and it's still amazing. Just not as teenage angst-y as what some people are wanting from them.

maybe it wasn't perfect but it did have some amazing tracks, and besides, max bemis's earlier song were fueled by personal, intense problems he was dealing with but now he's settling down a bit. He still plays his heart out every concert and he's still amazing. Maybe the album isn't up to the band's usual standards but they're still young, I'm sure they can make it up with a kick-ass album in the future:)

It's almost impossible for a band to go back to their old stuff no matter how hard they try, because even if they do it won't sound the same as they did, Max even said so himself in an interview that they wouldn't be able to copy the same sound as before.

A band makes their first album...if it makes enough money, they will get to make another, when they make another, they have more budget experiment with new equipment, new sounds etc. People who listened to Say Anything in the old school days, maybe they just prefer that sound, and find it hard to get used to this new stuff, but it will eventually grow on them if this band means a lot to them. It happens a lot when bands make new albums, they can't make it sound like one they have already done.

  • @supertrooper84

It doesn't sound like the old stuff, but that's the point. It happens to every band. If they're not pushing themselves creatively, their sound becomes stale, and no one wants that to happen to a band they like. Say Anything wouldn't be the same if every song sounded like it belongs on Is A Real Boy. Max isn't 18 anymore. He still writes great songs, just from a more mature perspective because he's grown up. Happens to everybody. Listen to the album without picturing him as a pissed off teenager.

Well, in my experience you can only write about a certain topic so much before you've explored all aspects of it and just don't feel anything about it any more. Maybe that's what happened to him. He finally worked out all the issues he usually sings about and because he's not full of mental anguish, he doesn't have anything to sing about.

Im sorry that you think that they aren't allowed to evolve their music and that they have to make the same album over and over. What does he say in Mara and Me? "Wait a second, I cant write the same damn song over and over again." It's not fair to say they don't make good music anymore. Personally the more i listen to this album, the more i like it. The classics will always have a place in our hearts, but there is always room for their evolution and new material.

How so? It's still the same band lyrically. They just arn't throwing out the "noise" as it were that they did with Real Boy or In Defense. If anything this album is far stronger than the self titled one before it. Sure, there are songs like So Good which border on cliche, but for the most part it's a solid album, just with a different step in direction. Say Anything is one of those bands who aren't entirely mainstream, so they need to alter their sound every now and then to tap into new markets.
