The DREADED Gold Plastic Syndrome……Pain | #transformers G1 Thunderclash and Extravaganza - Розваги
Imagine if they made golden lagoon figures back in the day. They would be ironicly the most brittle toys of the line.
*new fear unlocked:'
That would be hilariously ironic considering the golden lagoon is supposed to make you invincible
From golden lagoon to cosmic rust.
Hasbro : it was an intended feature all along
Solution: get the Optimus version of the mold, take the parts that are gold on Thunderclash, paint them, and put them on Thunderclash. You get the awesome mold without the horrible degradation.
If there are any toys that need a rerelease, it’s the toys with gold plastic syndrome (or anything with metallic plastic that’s turned to dust). Hasbro should do a whole wave of them. Call the toyline something like “Transformers: Golden Revival”
Ironically, the only thing from the GPS era that got a modern remake that I'm personally aware of is Combiner Wars Quickslinger (aka Slingshot) from the Combiner Wars G2 Superion set.
@@DragoonMS Based on the TF wiki page, G1 Black Zarak is essentially patient zero for GPS. So at least that has a modern release.
Really want a Legacy version of this guy. Commander class Thunderclash would be so amazing.
Oh fucking hell I agree wholeheartedly
Yep
even better would be a haslab. do this guy realy justice.
Try saying that 5 times fast lol. Commander class thunderclash definitely a tongue twister
💯 agree been longing for an official Hasbro release I really hope we get this guy
"Takes no effort"
*visibly putting force on it*
Literally thinking the same thing 🤣.
Thunderclash is so cool, but sadly the gold plastic ruins it
Quite literally at that
3d printing should hopefully be able to make replacement parts for these shattered bits easily.
I just had the machine wars version to avoid gps
Okay class take notes,
If you want a g1.5 thunderclash, buy a machine wars Optimus Prime, then either paint it yourself or hire a 'professional' to paint it into thunderclash. That way you don't worry about GPS
7:00 slight addition: while lime green was the only color to suffer this issue in bionicle sets released in 2007(with no widespread issues prior), its flaws spread to all bionicle sets released in and after 2008 up until the line ended in 2010 (while it was rebooted later on, they seemed to have their plastic issues sorted out by then).
edit: according to replies the issue that showed up in joints from 2008 to g1's end was an unrelated flaw in redesigned sockets and not a flaw in plastic quality
Prevailing theory for Bionicle is that the redesigned sockets are what caused 08 and beyond to break, seeing as they carried over into Hero Factory until they implemented the standard CCBS parts.
@@loran3860 correct. it's why the sockets don't just crumble like the lime green ones from 07 do. rather, the tops of the brackets just crack because of the molding.
Ok, I got to say, the Truck mode looks sick! The truck looks like something Hot Wheels would make.
G2 Slingshot is probably the worst case of GPS ever. Bro is ENTIRELY made out of gold plastic.
*Beast Wars Randy enters the chat:*
Him or Electro for G2
Allegedly the Masterforce Black Zarak was so prone to GPS that they would have parts disintegrate in box while sealed
that is because there is no position where it can store without putting stress on anything.
A complete Black Zarak was both a Holy Grail and a Schrodinger Cat for collectors.
Thanks for making me almost shit myself at 0:06 LMAO
Have you considered 3D printing the gold plastic parts on this guy: I bet someone on TFW2005 has the files for it.
The transformation for the truck looks really fun. Everything packs away so nicely I thought he was a version of Sideswipe when you made the first short.
3:20 oh cool, a bomb with a random but inevitable detonation
You should have put the "this toy will slowly fall apart and dieeeeeeee!" Intro again.
Also I had a heart attack when you slammed the bro down in the intro. I'm surprised you had the balls to do that
0:33 welp, call the series, he's lost his mind.
We really need to get gold plastic parts 3D scanned & modified to be more sturdy so we can get longer-lasting replacement parts easily.
I would love to see some of the upgrade kit companies to just take gps type parts and just release them in more solid plastics
Would be funny to see you do a video review on Randy
Honestly, my favorite youtube videos is the Randy gold plastic syndrome video
This is the kind of stuff someone should be making spare parts for. Maybe add some kind of seal or mark to differentiate them from original parts
Lego also had a problem with this outside of bionical, redish brown pieces would break just as easy as gps
I never knew this toy existed and it's a shame that it's a victim of gps because it looks like a lot of fun
I got three Thunderclashes, and don't have anything broken on them. A bit loose legs, but that's just normal. Also designed the rear platform and gun for 3D printing by Shapeways if you're interested.
I saw a digibash of the new animated Optimus made to look like Thunderclash, and it makes me want that to be real. If only so as for people to get a Thunderclash for their collections. I’ve heard even his third party figure is prone to breaking problems.
I was expecting it to just shatter right in the intro when u slammed him down, made my heart skip a beat
looks cool, yes the lime green problem was the reason that Elek is the only Barraki I couldn't restore, used his parts for other figures
I actually had gotten out of Bionicles before the lime green thing (didn't hurt that I only ever collected the Earth ones either), but I remember a LOT of issues with that pearl silver they used in the Metru Nui stuff, it's actually WHY I stopped buying them to begin with actually.
Been enjoying all of your videoed recently
Tuma's problem is more the bad socket design they've shifted to during 2008-2011, those do not last regardless of color. It is mostly the 2007 toys that have brittle lime connectors.
'SCHLONG CANNON' You nearly made me choke on my Pepsi, man XD
"oh this piece is really sol-" *piece snaps*
This is the real battle: Green Bionicle vs. Gold Plastic. The true winner will also lose
Love him just breaking things
The sticker on the windscreen gives him a Rock eyebrow lmao.
Had this guy as a kid and though it is long lost to time always had mixed feelings. The design and colour scheme are fantastic, one of the nicest looking of its era. Truck mode looks great, base mode was ok, but I always wished that the robot figure was about 50% larger with some actual articulation in the joints. I know that wasnt really a thing yet, but that is what I remember. A modern leader/ commander class figure is guaranteed to sell.
I think you've stumbled on a new format: GPS ASMR
I still have my childhood G2 Electro. It only broke in 2 places, which just so happen to still allow the truck-mode to hold the figure together for display. I treat it like a faberge egg now.
I've got my original in storage somewhere and I haven't touched him in years, mind you I did break one of his hands, the mini peg off the gun and I'm missing the missiles. And since Hasbro is taking forever to give us a new one, Armada Prime will be standing in as my Thunderclash.
That’s sick I love it!
I never once felt I needed an updated Thunderclash, but given how retro cool the colors are, and that Hasbro just dropped a Legacy Nova Prime, I'm all for it. As for this thing, I lucked out on Ebay 20 some years ago and got a completed Machine Wars iteration in the Optimus Prime deco. Not as eye catching, but still a really unique and fun toy to have in the collection, and I can mess with it on and off without anything breaking. The European release of Thunderclash had a rapid fire bullet system for the canon while I think both Prime, and Thunderclash only had the spring loaded one shot canons of which were two. In addition to the missing platform he had a small gun that could be both held, and plugged into the top of the trailer. As for GPS. Rip BWs Air Razor, Dinobot, and Energon Scoponok which has long shown signs of cracking.
1:30, hey jake, you hear that monkeys's paw.
Wow....just wow. Just when I thought G1 Smokescreen's die-cast hood was fragile, the gold plastic on Thunderclash puts it to shame instantly.
At least this figure got a non GPS affected repaint. So, if you were to find a cheap Machine Wars Optimus Prime cab, you could use that as spare parts.
I personally would try to measure and 3d model the gold parts to 3d print to replace them with stronger plastic. Not sure how difficult that would be, and it definitely would lower the value, but at least you don't have to worry about gps when you look at it wrong.
And I will say that the mushroom peg of a leg on one of my Power Core Combiners recently broke. I forget the name, but it was the Aerialbot-like one...
Thunder Clash *desperately* needs a new figure. I hope Legacy fulfills that void (and maybe repaint it into Machine Wars Optimus just for fun).
Speaking of GPS, does anyone remember Randy? IYKYK.
Thunder Clash's longevity can be done by removing the ratchet catch from his ankles and sanding down the grip of his gun a bit.
4:36-6:36 wreckers to protoform in autobots return scene be like:
6:24 Not the Lime green bionicles! Oof.
i want to collect all these sorts of figures, and seeing people purposely break them makes me kinda feel bad lol
I’m going to say “Massive Battle Platform” constantly now
This video was painful and funny at the same time
FYI, I literally finally pulled the trigger on the Fanshobby Thunderclash in the past month or 2 (I already had the IDW inspired MMC version, which I love...). I can safely say that the FH version is worth getting. It's a surprisingly easy transformation and it feels sturdy and solid. Size wise he's approaching MP but could work with bigger CHUG and definitely with 3rd party/in between CHUG and MP scale.
He’s right about the lime green bionicles. I’ve had about four that have broken on me.😂 only one left.
This was ONE of the toys of my childhood! I’m kinda afraid since I know the gps situation, but only the handle of his gun, and the tower that I could glue again. Wish someone could make replace parts with 3D printing or, heck inject molding to repair these toys and have them complete again when they inevitable break
"SCHLONGGG"
😂😂😂😂
I will never touch my vintage GI Joe Serpentor or his Air Chariot again
RIP Andrew Sorahan. A devastating loss to the community
i love how people jus got here and are talking about the figure like they watched the 11 minute video already 🤣🤣🙃🤧🤧
it's such a weird toy! so out there, even for the TF mythology of the time. he feels very tacked-on in a funny way, and i think it's cool they clearly just wanted to make a BIG TOY. the IDW version is awesome as well but that's like, every character so there's that.
I had a Thunderchash with severe GPS and replaced the broken parts with Machine Wars prime and just repainted them.
As someone who hates toy brake-age this whole video is pain
I love Thunder Clash, one of the best G1 European Exclusives. I’ve been fortunate enough to own two, the first I got in 2020 but sold this year and the second is a boxed one I got earlier this year which even includes the gold gun. I’ve never had issues with any of mine but rarely transformed it and haven’t put the gold gun in his hand. Would like to get the Kenner Machine Wars Optimus Prime though which is much less fragile and the gun is not gold which is a huge plus. I’ve been hoping for a Legacy Uni (well Legacy United now) Thunder Clash for months now.
Love the BIONICLE reference. Lime green and the ‘08 socket mould is their version of Gold Plastic Syndrome alright.
He looks like an ice cream truck 😂
5:30 Stop! Stop…He’s already dead… 😢
commander class thundercrash/MW optimus would be AMAZING
I really want a legacy thunderclash but ultimately I got tired of waiting and got the MMC version.
There are some figures like Beast Wars Transquito that should break but don’t lol
I've bought a loose g1 Thunderclash a couple years ago and every time I grab him I dread his toes to just turn to dust
a video about GPS cracking and snapping the plastic, with half of it being surprised to have gold plastic cracking and snapping
a lot of thunderclashes were release at retail here, so it's not unusual to see one 'apparently' mint, to the point that sometimes I feel tempted to grab, but I know better
and it is a waste. the character is really cool, and the massive battle platform really would work with the additional battle platform mode from the modulizer and the other generations trucks; a modern day incarnation would probably be made by legacy animated optimus with a slightly retouched legacy armada prime trailer (so, likelly a gen sel).
if character like the monsterbot, cindersaur and the duocon can get their own new toy(or remold), as they did, so should thunderclash , and electro for the matter (come on, we have axelgrease that would be ready to go with just a different head and flattened spikes! could even be sold as the GPS Survivors Pack!)
I'm suprised Hasbro hasn't recoloured any Optimus toys into him, especially live action Optimus - change the blue to white, keep the red and blue head, and add Thunder Clash's Autobot logo.
I was interested in acquiring a Thunderclash last year. However, I ended up going with Fans Hobby Lightning Eagle to scrath that itch as was worried about GPS.
personally, I'm so incredibly tired of commander class Autobots BUT a commander Torca and Thunderclash would be absolutely awesome
Dude, you can make mold to replace the gold or whatever bronze. If a Model kit builders don’t like a part or broke something by accident.
A good example would a Gundam.
Lime joints were that bad only in 2007, in 2008 Lego got rid of air in them, but design of sockets got worse, so they WILL not break that easly on figures from 2008 to 2010.
Thankfully, not as bad as the infamous Randy Figure. Gold plastic shell that you can easily crush in your hand without even trying.
I have a Hot Soldier HS-13 (G1 Goldbug) that is Metalic Gold Plastic and it's going to have GPS later on in life. I cringe every time I handle it knowing I have to keep it in its box now,.
Seeing as you mention your friend, get them to 3D print replacement parts for you ASAP that way you can replace the GPS parts to have a full function Thunderclash
I got Thunderclash for Christmas... I forget what year. It's long gone, well before GPS would have been a problem. But I think even though I haven't bought Transformers for like 20 years... I'd probably pick up a new Thunderclash if it was an original mold intended to be him.
SO my stupid head canon is Thunderclash is who hotrod becomes naturally in the future without the power of the Matrix. I don't know why but i always thought this toy gave off Rodimus vibes.
i have a 2010 hailstorm who has bronze treads made of a similair metalic plastic which is sparkly and a little swirly, but it seems to be largely supported by gray plastic inner parts aswell.
by no the toy is 14 years old but in not sure if this is a toy thatll actually suffer from gps.
i know another toy in the 2010 line does tho
Only lime green pieces from 2007 disintergrate, ones from beofre that are just as solid as any other color and ones from later years are just naturally brittal due to the 2008 socket redesign
Should've made a resin model of his feet before shattering them lol
they need to reissue this guy with maby not gold plastic
Generations Selects version of this character would be cool. Use the Volvo mold maybe?
Lagacy Break-formers be like:
This is so hard to watch my g1 megatron is like this
Whenever I think of GPS I think or Randy. 😢
This makes me wonder, has anyone ever tried replacing an OG G2 Thunderclash’s gold plastic parts with 3D printed parts that are then spray painted gold? Granted, one could argue that could be more effort than it’s worth but then again the option is definitely there-
I think I can replicate the platform, I do have this toy and I'm, on the process of designing the gold parts so that they can be printed and replace the original brittle pieces
I broke a piece off my magnaboss i got from my friend transforming it once. luckily it was easy to glue but i will never de combine him again lol
There is a knockoff of this figure floating around where it has dark brown plastic
Imagine if someone 3D printed all the GPS parts with proper plastic or resin?
Might have to see if I can't find myself a third party one online, cause god knows when an offical one might appear
It seems you’ve seen the animated legacy prime?
Should just get a machine wars Optimus, and some gold paint and get rid of all the gold plastic entirely you won’t have the working launchers anymore, though.
What's weird to me is the GPS thing doesn't always affect metallic swirly plastic. Transmetal megatron is notorious for his metallic plastic being fine and holding up for decades but the brown plastic doing the gold plastic thing of disintegrating if you breathe on it wrong like 2 or 3 years after being released.
I've heard some Thunderclashes that weirdly don't get affected by GPS as bad as others. I don't want to take the risk, though. Really a shame too because it's a great figure. There's an Optimus prime repaint that doesn't suffer from GPS, thankflully. I'd probably buy both and Frankenstein the two together if I managed to get them for cheap lmao.
Also primus is now suffering GPS-like symptoms? It's been nearlyif not 2 decades weird that it took a long time given how GPS tends to hit only a few years after the figure comes out. Hoping it's just weird edge-brittling wear on the plastic like how my n64 has tiny little chunks missing from the black plastic or what I've seen on some TM2 megatrons' legs around where the joint rubs and not full on GPS.
EDIT: Forgot to mention the lime green bioniclestuff applies to all lime green lego after a certain year. Stuff from before that year (like the og lewa/lewa nuva) tends to be safe.
EDITX2: someone beat me to it! blugh!
I've seen a ko version of this online, I always wondered who it was
That Toy Guy tries out Transformers Reviewing Hard mode!.
I wonder how viable giving a Machine Wars Prime a custom paint job is to have a Thunderclash. The trailer looks like the only section that would have a lot of paint scraping but even if the whole thing were prone to that it'd still be better than GPS
Huh. Ive been meaning to take a junker Thunderclash I have apart to draw up a printable model of the feet. Good to know what it looks like and er, what not to do?😅
