Kenya's president deploys military amid deadly protests over new tax plan

- Kenyan President William Ruto deployed the military to try to quell the protests that broke out against the government's plan to raise taxes. At least six people have been killed in the demonstrations and hundreds more are injured. The country's parliament building in Nairobi was also set on fire. BBC News correspondent Barbara Plett Usher joined CBS News with more on the stream.

The whole protest is stupid and basically an act of self-sabotage. Kenyans hardly pay any taxes at all, to give you context in 2023 they paid only $7bn. South Africa, which has a similar population collected $130bn - nearly 20x as much.

Explain to me how rioting, looting etc make the situation better? I understand the frustration at tax increases but these actions harm innocent Kenyans, rather than the government.
For some context, these protests were peaceful up until the politicians made it crystal clear that they had no intentions of listening to what the people were saying to them then it turned to rage.
@@brxan3096 I'm aware of this context. thank you. My point is they should direct their anger at the government, not local shop keepers etc. Stealing a TV doesn't solve the issue. Interesting enough the Government just announced they are rescinding the legislation. While this is a win for the people, there were a lot of innocents harmed and livelihoods destroyed.

@@CheekyBird790 Yes, I did watch a number of interviews with business owners last night where their stores were ransacked & basically left with nothing. I sympathise with these people because this sort of thing almost always ends up happening in these situations in a number of countries where a few people take these opportunities to engage in criminal activity. A lot of these folks will be starting from zero on top of all the existing problems which is really unfortunate.
The police are killing unarmed civilians, and all official channels for addressing this issue are compromised. Members of parliament serve the president as if the country is his private business, and the Chief Justice is also on his payroll. Demonstrations are the only avenue left for the people, but the police, who earn as little as $180 monthly and lack health insurance, are killing young unarmed men and women to protect politicians flaunting $60,000 watches and purchasing entire apartment blocks in Dubai. Are you starting to see the problem?
