  • It can be difficult to find your way around the lyre with no reference points! You can get sticker rhinestones on Amazon to mark your place: amzn.to/3MgHLlv
Or use paint markers! Posca (name brand) can be purchased here: amzn.to/384q0qT
    Or the off-brand I use: amzn.to/3EtzuYK

Ha! I did this too. I thought I was being smart. Marker gets on my fingers, but at least I can find my place. :D

Haha, yep! I tried sharpies first and had that same problem. Paint markers are awesome though!

Another tip to find strings on lyre: (note: this is ALL assuming you use therapeutic glide technique, not harp plucking technique)
Rest your ring finger on the e string and index finger on the e string (all of this for the left hand)
This helps put landmarks for your strings (more visible than thin red or black, and can mute them in case you play them accidentally)
If you have a chromatic lyre, you’ll notice the gap between the e string (and anything after) and the b string (and anything after), this is because they don’t have accidentals, which makes a more visible landmark to have both hands play with ease
    Hope this helps!

Hi Molly! I used to play harp and am wondering if you have restrung any of these lyres with gut/nylon strings? I have tried the Posca markers, but they wear off so quickly, I figured I would just change all the strings. I'd love to know your thoughts!

I did this, but I think the sound of the strings is a bit more suppressed with the paint on. Plus the paint does go off after some time... Maybe its the paint type I used, not sure. Its not a big deal as I am just a beginner and playing for myself or some friends, but maybe into the future, I will try to find a better system if it exists! :-D I like those rhinestones though, they look very pretty on the lyre.

Could you use an oil based marker?

Can I simply retune the C strings and F strings to C# and F# to enable me to play other in other keys? I have some violin music that I love in keys requiring sharps.
Sounds possible to me--but I am a music newbie who is totaly self taught and ignorant in many areas!

In case you don’t get a reply go to the lyre harp subreddit. They have beginner information. You’ll want to decide if you want a hollow body, solid body, dear shape, bean shape, wood or acrylic. The body type and material will influence the sound so that part is a personal preference thing (plus the type of music you plan to play). I’m actually a beginner so I can’t help more but I just wanted to make sure you knew about the different body type and materials having different sounds.

do you have 21 string harp that goes from E6 on the left as you look at it to F3 on the right as you look at it?
Where can I find sheet music for beginner lyre. I have played the harp.

these are basically *acrylic paint* markers. (posca is higher quality which is why it's more $. sometimes it really matters that the application is better, paint isn't as thin, sticks better, doesn't gimp out fast, etc.)
ANYWAY ---> *you can also use actual acrylic paint also* . put a little between your fingers and press together multiple times till you have something a bit tacky and not too much to be gloopy, then you can press on down along the string, or dab, or however you like. KEY IS - *thin* like you just have a dab or layer you'd wipe off on your messy jeans.
i paint, so i have artist grade acrylic. the cheap stuff is generally thinner, more watery. it will still work but will be paler at the consistency needed.
markers might be easier for most. but if you have paint on hand you can use that too. works great. : )
tried blue sharpie first and the small strings basically look to disappear. (too dark)
    * also, i just marked the strings from the top down to where i'd mostly be playing. that way it wouldn't flake much. didn't figure i'd be looking lower, as my hands would be in the way. so that's an option to try. or mark above and below where you'd be playing.

Does the marker color come off on your fingers? The info says they are water-based paint. Some harp players have colored a faint F string with permanent blue Sharpie marker, but even that comes off on one's fingers. Do you know of a better solution/marker? Thank you, as always, for your videos.

Personally, I've used these markers on my wire strung harp for several months and (once it's dry) have never had a problem with color transfer! But I've played enough string instruments to know that some people's body chemistry reacts differently with some substances than others, so it's difficult to be sure.

Hi, can i use acrylic paint,??
Because i don't have paint marker, and i can't find in the market pls answer my question plss

    • @MusicalMollyKhan
      @MusicalMollyKhan  2 роки тому +1

That is a great question! I think the paint used in the paint markers is acrylic so it should work, but you'll have to be more careful brushing it on in order to not splatter on the instrument.

@@MusicalMollyKhan i will use acrylic paint, because it's affordable, and i will put the acrylic paint in the lyre string, so that i would not confuse.
