    Thank you for this, Jeff. I spent many years in my 20s and 30s in agonizing pain, hopped up on pain killers, and spending a fortune on chiropractors, because of two herniated disks between my shoulder blades. NO ONE told me to build up my back muscles and neck muscles. They only treated the symptoms, over and over and over. Once I learned how to strengthen my back muscles the herniated disks vanished, and now in my 50s I am stronger and healthier and PAIN FREE, than I was at half my age.

I recommend some of my patients to your channel as a reference when I discharge them. That way, they can continue to develop strength and mobility at a higher level. There are a lot of incorrect information on youtube that can lead to more dysfunction in people following their advice so I try to filter it out for them. Please keep up the good work! Much appreciate it!

    2:11 - Bar Hang (toes touching the ground)
    3:23 - Seated Row (cables or weight band)
    4:48 - Reverse Hyperextension (lay chest on bench, keep legs straight, lift feet up). Note that Jeff did a separate video on this exercise (by itself) for fixing low back pain, so this may be the best one to do!
    5:47 - Hyper Row - (lay on your chest on a bench with feet under a piano or countertop or something, raise your back, then at the top of the extension, do a row with dumbbells, one arm at a time)
    6:44 - Pullthrough (cable or weight band)
    After building foundation of strength with the previous exercises, add in dead lift and barbell row:
    7:38 - Deadlift
    8:57 - Barbell Row

    Reading these comments and stories gives me so much hope. I’ve been in terrible pain for over a year now. Shooting and stabbing pain on my entire left side all the way down to my foot. The mornings are brutal and I’ve seen chiropractors and physical therapists here and there. X-rays revealed nothing. Just got an MRI finally after PT was not yielding results. Not only is my body suffering, but a few years ago I suffered a horrendous mental breakdown, which had many residual affects, and I severely struggle with physical touch. This pain has forced me to confront way more than I’d anticipated, but I’m so ready to have my life back. I used to cycle and mountain bike, but the seat causes too much discomfort to tolerate. I walk everyday and am still active. I miss the old me....but am trying desperately to get to the other side. Thank you all for your rehab stories. I want so badly to be well again.

    I can attest to all of these excercises. My physio recommend all of these to build up my back and glute muscles due to a very painful herniated disc.
    I worked at it consistently for FIVE years to avoid having a spinal fusion operation ($10,000).
    Today I am pain free, more flexible, stronger and never had to go for the operation. BUT, you have to be commited and CONSISTENT.
    I'm one of those disciplined people and enjoy being physical, but it was hard work. I'm 61 btw, so no excuses.

      @@cn1878 I forgot to mention my pain was so debilitating I could only walk 300 metres and then I would have to sit down, rest and stretch my legs, but everyone will have different levels of pain.
      Here is what I did:
      1) ALWAYS warm up before you train. Jeff has a good video on warm ups for lower back.
      I found the cardio rowing machine to be good with some stretches.
      2) Use your environment as a gym to the extent your pain can handle it. Indoors and outdoors.
      I do what I call "leg pumps" whenever I see a flight of stairs. I don't take escalators, I "leg pump" by taking two steps at a time. It gets the glutes and legs going.
      My mates laugh at me but it's part of graduation to the more challenging gym exercises. I still do them today even though I'm better and some of my mates join in now.
      3) I found a good warm up helped me to train through the pain. Funnily, when I trained in the gym the pain wasn't that bad, but the next day I would feel it, but it was more of a "good" pain.
      I guess what I'm saying is you graduate your way through the more challenging gym exercises and start light. Don't compromise form.
      Leave your ego at the door, go light weights, have good form, concentrate on mind-muscle connection and be consistent ... turn up.

      This is encouraging. I have a slight slipped disc apparently (don't we all) and a couple years ago the Barbell row made my back snap really bad so now I'm hesitant about that exercise.
      Do you have any tips on how strong to get in these earlier moves in the video until it's time to move on to the more advanced stuff?
      I'd love to really get my back in shape but I don't want to hurt it again.

I hearniated my L5-S1 disc so bad I was having sciatica in my left leg and urinary incontinence issues. 1 year and 6 months later I was back at work after many excercise similar to the ones you show excluding the deadlifts. Fast forward 3 years after many rescues and zero issues I had to rescue a 490 lb man. Now I'm back to square 1. But now I have sciatica in both legs and feet. The problem is when rescuing large immobile people is that you cannot keep a symmetrical stance when pulling up from the ground with uneven loads, through small gaps and around corners. There is only so much the spine can take even when in good shape. When In perfect alignment the discs can handle phenomenal forces. Put them at any angle outside of nuetral and it's a gamble.

    Jeff, how long are we "supposed" to be sore/tight after a workout, and what does that soreness actually mean? For example, if I train chest & triceps on Monday, and by Thursday or Friday those muscles are still sore/tight, does that just mean I had a *really* good workout on Monday? Or does it mean I'm not recovering properly afterwards?

    • @athleanx
      @athleanx  4 роки тому +91

      Soreness is not really an indicator of a "good" workout or for that matter a bad one in the absence of soreness. The primary driver of soreness from your workout is from eccentric stress. You could theoretically do one set with a spotter helping you to perform slow eccentrics after reaching concentric failure and be so sore you couldn't touch that muscle for a week. Volume would be almost zero but soreness off the charts.

    Can you please do one on the upper back. Ie, traps and neck.
    I've had upper trap problems for 2 years. Tight neck, tight knotted traps which has given me headaches for ages. At the moment I'm doing rotator cuff exercises with hope that it takes load off of my upper traps and lets them relax.
    Thanks.

    • @tighconley6889
      @tighconley6889 4 роки тому

      Completely agree. No idea where this issue stems from, but I've been fighting it lately and it's a daily struggle to try and teach my traps to relax and not be in control of every single upper back movement I do while I'm at work. Stretching helps, but I can't figure out what muscles my traps are compensating for.

    • @akiraperera9574
      @akiraperera9574 4 роки тому

      @@tighconley6889 Yeah, it's crazy. I literally have no idea on what to do next. No way am I doing a specific rehab for 2 months, just to find that it wasn't the right one. (Rehab being, stretching, random holds, strengthening etc) There's like a 1000 different rehabs aswell. I tried helping to cut the grass recently, my traps were on fire! I mean, that's like a super basic task aswell.
      At the moment I'm thinking that the surrounding muscles aren't activated or are weak. So then the upper traps have to do everything. I'm doing lower trap focused shrugs and rotator cuff work mainly with hopes that it takes load off of my upper traps.

    I can vouch for this. I did extensions and deadlift while having back pain. At first with light weights and then slowly increasing. My back pain started to reduce slowly, and I was able to maintain good posture for longer periods of time.
    Now, due to lock down, i cant go to the gym, and I can feel my back and glutes are getting weaker. Holding a correct sitting posture is becoming more difficult now, and slowly my back pain is making a comeback.

      The time frame depends on your progress speed and that depends on so many factors is just unpredictable. Just take your time and check your body. It should be challenging, but not painful if you are not in an acute pain episode.
      One week is probably too short for most of the steps in my opinion though. Maybe not for the first one. But that is just a guess.

      It has nothing to do with calorie balance and how he plans his diet. If he in fact needs TRT to look the way he does means that he wouldn’t look the same without it. Alright. Staying lean though is diet manipulation and experience to be good at it without fucking up in any way. I’m ripped all year for a few years now and it is easier the more I do it. I don’t crash down anymore because I do it smooth. I know the important stuff enough so I don’t need much overthinking or effort. I don’t do complicated diets anymore. Everything is so normal and part of your life if you do it all the time for years. It is a lot. But it sure is natural to be ripped.
