Another great video with fantastic insight! I had no idea that ENVE was making wider wheels! Thanks again for your hard work! You are building an amazing brand with an increasing amount of pull with a very passionate group of people that carry some serious purchasing power! Bravo! Thanks for putting ENVE on my short list of wheels!
Idk if it's the Maniak prototype, or the big chunky tires or the + sides wheels...or maybe just the combination of it all, but I keep coming back to this video. This is probably the 5th time I've watched it. I can't quite put my finger on it, but this video def has the "special sauce." Thanks for the content Steve!
@@hardtailparty Maybe I'll follow Coleman off those diving board rocks next time! I'm still super impressed by your speed through some of those chunky downhills.
Once I tried 29+, I never looked back. 29x3 XR4's on Duroc 50's on my Waltworks steel hardtail. They work year round in Northern UT from dry & dusty in the summer to snow and muck in the winter. Finding true 29x3 tires is getting harder though!
I have a lot of ENVE components on my hardtail’s and they’re an amazing company with #1 customer service. I don’t have the rims yet, mainly because I just haven’t thought of them as a wider internal width plus set. I was thinking of the G27 for my gravel bike but they’re only 650B and I want 700c. My latest SS has carbon i35mm rims, I just didn’t consider i40mm for that bike and didn’t know they had a i35mm version. I’m happy that they are getting these wheels to you and your raising awareness. Thanks
You should check out the ENVE AG25, it's a 25i gravel wheel in 700c. Closer to your 27mm internal you're looking for. Also priced lower, still made in the USA, and include lifetime incident protection.
@@ColemanEdwardsPublicRelations I looked at that wheel set and it uses the Mavic hub that I have never liked. The rim is nice and i25mm is a great width for 700x42c gravel tires. I will be posting up my Zipp XPLO rims and you will see why I wanted wider.
You know what Brother, We love, ya great review of Great American made products on what I believe to be a perfect platform designed by technical and tactical subject matter experts yourself of course and Enve. Awesome riding, and you're making me jealous talking about the Maniak. I need to go down there someday. Really want to test my skills. I nearly bought those same wheels around this time last year. Backcountry ran a sale for about a week at $1400. Once I decided to pull the trigger they went back up to $2500. So I bought my Bontrager Line Pro 40's. Been a great wheelset so far. First wheels I've ever owned to stay true and not pop spokes through a full season of riding. I normally run 17 rear and 15 psi up front. But another great thing is I can really air them down for winter riding in the snow. I go 11 rear and 9 up front. I'm not pushing hard in the the snow and just need max traction. I feel no need to ever get a fat bike. Please keep advocating for 29+. It's a gamechager especially on a hardtail.
Enve is premium priced for sure. Thanks for explaining why. I didn't know about the layup with the spoke holes already in the mould. My intuition tells me that's probably an expensive process both during development and the ongoing labor cost. The Maniak is so swoopy. It's retro klunkeresque and the look is growing on me. 29+ is by far my favourite size. I wish many more supported the size. Thanks Steve. I run XR4's on 50mm rims at 11psi on a hardtail in some pretty rocky stuff, and no issues.
@@quarkidee2878 I've had a Trek Farley since 2016 that I run fully rigid and fat in the winter, but for the spring, summer, fall I put a 29+ suspension fork and a 29+ wheel set wheelset on it. Love 29+. running 29x2.8 teravail Coronado tires (because it was literally the only tire available when I needed them) on custom wheels in my Orbea Occam full squish and Trek 1120 bikepacker. The float, grip and roll over ability amaze me everytime I ride. Great content as usual Steve.
Thanks for the adventure Steve I really enjoyed that one. That bike looks like it handles great. That made me miss riding a lot. I just had knee surgery two weeks ago and have a long recovery ahead. I'll have to live vicariously through guys like you until I can get back out there.
I have a trek stache 7. Going through two rear rims I upgraded to m640 rim with i9 torch hubs. Cost more than my bike brand new. Like 40mm can go down to 2.6 or up to 3.0. Light wheels front wheel doesn't dive like it did with crappy rim. Love 29 plus great traction in winter, spring, damp trails. A little over kill in the middle of summer on easy and intermediate trails.
I can only support buying ENVEs - they have the best customer service hands-down! When I punctured my rear rim with a nail (go figure), they replaced the rim for $50!!!!! Only took two weeks to get the new wheel back. You can't beat that in my mind. Steve will 3.0 fit the Rocker (geared)?
I hope plus tires in general stick around, 27.5 and 29. I love my 27.5+ hardtail, it was a blast on Back 40 and the Ledges in Bella Vista, Arkansas yesterday
"Every 29+ rim I've tried so far is stiff" so that's true even after you adjusted the spoke tension on the ICAN wheels? Their website says you can tell them if you're putting it in a hardtail and they'll adjust the tension. The Trek Stache Facebook group I'm in has said it makes a big difference
I know what you mean, Steve! Even the 27.5x2.8 or 3.0. I hope manufacturers don't stop this tire sizes. My wife loves her bikes with 2.8 sizes and I see them getting less and less especially the 3.0's. I want to try the 29x2.8 but not many in stock. I''m not sure I'm ready for the 29x3.0 yet. I also ride M635 on my 27.5x2.8 plus bikes as well as Reserve 37. The Reserves are heavier by almost 200g but they feel zippier. I prefer the M635 though because they track very well on choppy corners. The front doesn't skip like the Reserve's. Oh the other hand, Reserve's feel bulletproof, they just take it and if I'm going down fast on chunks (think Butcher, Downieville), I would choose my Reserve only because they will track straight on highspeed runs and idk why but I feel that wheel is just built to be punished. lol These wheels are on my full suspension btw. I don't dare to run Carbon wheels of any brand on my HT. I use custom built Stans Baron, laced on CX-Ray blades, 2x lacing... All wheels are on Hydra only hubs. Sold my Onyx wheels after a close call with hikers. 😬
I hear a lot of talk about i9 being a safety factor for hikers but I've never once had them alert a hiker. To each their own though. I'm definitely more of an onyx man
I would definitely not rely on a hub to alert inattentive trail users. I've had multiple folks not hear my timber bell going full blast in the chunk. One of the reasons I like some MTB only trails. You're not going to run into a jogger blasting their music into their earbuds. 😅
I love my 29+ stache, Trek really disappointed a lot of people by dropping it out of their lineup. Not a ton of other bike options out there as well as tire company's dropping their 29+ tires are making things tough.
Great review Steve, appreciate the ti frame, it is bar none my favorite frame material. Curious to know your crank length. I'm going to guess 165/170mm - makes pushing a wide and big 29" wheel easier especially if you have short legs.
