The Pixel4 was ahead of it's time. It got a bad rap because of the battery life but it had a ton of features that don't even show up on the Pixel 8 or still missing on flagships. If you turn some of them off, the battery is fine. It was a flagship phone back in the day. It's a phone that still deserves getting security updates, it's too good to turn into ewaste.
Great video! Basically, in the past, you didn't want to take pictures with your phone because the pictures weren't pretty compared to professional cameras. Now the photos are too sharp and artificial that the only way to enjoy photos from phone is to shoot in RAW so you reduce that effects, but our phones don't have enough capacity for that. HAHA. The iPhone does the same thing unfortunately, but the oversharpening is much much lower. They need to change this ASAP! Another thing that is obvious from this video is that phones don't need to come out every single f****ng year! 😅
Really happy to see you do this video. I got a Pixel 4a recently to compare it to my Pixel 7 pro. Because i had been having the same thought, the camera quality has gotten worse. Especially Portraits and Night mode, Google was the king of both these modes. But both have gotten worse over the last 3 generations.
Marc Levoy who was google's computational photography wizard left google in 2020, I think that's why newer Pixel's hasn't been as amazing when it comes to photography
Pixel 6 Pro and 7 Pro take fantastic portraits with Periscope/Zoom lens, no need for Portrait Mode and fake bokah. To take decent portraits with Portrait Mode use only 1X (with retouching off) which is actually 2X, and 2X option is actually 3X, it is digital crop of a main sensor, so it turns out with extremely digital and edge detection basically becomes impossible to be accurate at all. So obviously it does not compete with dedicated 2X or 3X telephoto lenses for Portrait Mode, like P4, new iPhones or Samsungs. but it takes amazing portraits with 5X. With that said, Marc Levoy leaving Google after P4 line made Google Camera progress slow down big time, he was responsible for all the camera engineering and this computational software.
i sometimes hate the edge detection on google camera, i much rather prefer to add portrait effect on the gallery which lets me control intensity and depth.
As much as I love my Pixel 7 Pro (and its camera system), portrait mode has to be its main weakness. Lukcy for me, I have a workaround of switching it to 5x and then taking a photo, which makes it a million times better. Still, having a dedicated portrait mode which is this bad, is bad for google.
Finally someone made a video, qs a pixel 3xl user at past, i had the same feeling, from 2 to 7 on portrait mode , google hadn't improved at at all, it looks so fake and over sharpened, when i zoon at my face , it makes me sad, too much over sharpness and very bad edge detection, now im a iphone xs max user, its sooo so much better on portrait mode, i only take portrait mode most of the time, 80% . Google should have a 2 or 3x lens for portrait mode, that digital zoom is so bad, i would definitely buy if this happens because im a android lover, bought iphone just for that portrait mode
What would have been great for you to do is to use the 7 pro's 5x telephoto lens, and then put the portrait effect on it and the photographs are very professional
The 5x lens is impractical in most situations for portrait and I find it tends to take very, very soft images. AND the autofocus on it isn't great either.
Dude, I was just complaining a few days ago to a friend how fried they made the latest camera app. Its bogus, and outputs overly denoised mashed potato looking images. Whats worse, even the raw images took a big hit in detail and quality, they are no where near as good as the raw images it output at launch, and even worse so when the pixel 6 launched. IDK who's running the camera department over at google but Im convinced that bozo has never touched an actual camera before. You know what I've been doing for images that I have time to setup and think about? Using the built in camera in the lightroom mobile app, it takes amazing images in raw and even has an "experimental HDR" mode that does really great. Give that a try and let me know what you think!! Motion Cam Pro is also a great photo app and outputs really great RAW images. I can't wait until Adobe releases their upcoming camera app. Marc Levoy, who pioneered a lot of the pixel camera app processes is heading up that app so it should be very special.
Yes for some reason Google has a problem with portrait mode since Pixel 6 series. I have both of 7 Pro and 4XL and I still prefer portraits of the 4XL.
the one thing is, the step between each generation are getting way more smaller and not as big as we used to, 5 - 8 years back... remember the difference between an iphone 4 & 5, or 7 & 8, an Pixel 2 & 3 and so on. Now an Iphone 12 Pro is for sure not as good as an Iphone 14 Pro, but the step between is not so extreme.
Loved this video!!!! I desperately hope Google listens to you. Also, Googles software processing has been using on Google photos and Google camera. I bet the processing looked better on the pixel 4 and 3 longer so than it does now.
Until last August, I had a Pixel 2XL. Had that for a long time because I really liked it. Now, I have the Pixel 6 and I swear the Pixel 2XL took better photos. I can't compare video because I didn't really shoot any with the Pixel 2XL. But, I'm definitely not really thrilled with the Pixel 6 images.
Someone sent me a folder of pixel 2XL portrait mode shots and I was blown away. This is what prompted me to make this video because I wasn’t impressed with portrait mode and I remember it being way better on pixel phones
I was searching for that particular thing, *the over sharpening* on Pixel 7 Pro, it's really annoying and I thought of selling my phone because of it! thanks for the amazing Video and hope they will come with a fix.
The Ridiculous oversharpening on portrait mode was the reason i sold my Pixel 7 Pro.. So disappointed its strongest point which was on the P4 & P6 too became its weakest one on the 7. Pleased you made this video addressing this Annoyance with what used to be the wow factor owning a Pixel.
@@LeeZavitz Looking forward to your professional opinion of the new Pixel 7a with its new 64mp camera. Your the 1st person i thought of when all the reviews came out.
You can actually get much better detailed shots without much of the processing if you take some time to set up a modded gcam on pixels. As like all other stock apps, google too does a lot of unnecessary oversharpening
You have option to smooth out skina when you drop down menu from top in portrait mode , i always choose second option it a nice balance between , it's called face retouch and set it you subtle ❤, enjoy
@@LeeZavitz i own pixel 6 pro and i wish they give option to choose between main & telephoto lens for potrait mode although normal shots also have some short of Bokeh using telephoto lens but lacks wide angle looks 🥲 and very nice content keep it up 🔥😍
the reasoning for pixel 4 being the best portrait mode shooter for the pixel line is because it uses the 2x telephoto lens as a depth sensor. however if one doesn't use portrait mode then it's pointless. the 6 pro has the best telephoto lens and is essentially a portrait mode on it's own
So the 6a is the last phone to use the old sensor but with the new processor. I think that comparison with the 7 pro would be awesome! MKBHD did a blond test for all phones and the 6a actually won!

I've deafly noticed this with my pixel 4XL way. Better photos on my seven pro. I did have a six pro which was a small upgrade. The 4XL has the best camera in my opinion I don't know what they've done to it
Started my photography journey officially on a pixel 3 and people couldn't believe it was a shot on a phone. Used my pixel 7 pro 2 weeks and I had to return it for an iPhone 14 pro. I couldn't deal with how disappointing the portrait mode was. I'm a huge pixel fanboy and I'm sad using an iPhone and missing out on some of my favourite features on pixel phones but until the camera gets good again I'll be 😢 sticking to the iPhones
They are struggling with the new sensor to do portrait mode for some reason. Been 18 months and they still haven't fixed it. I still prefer my 7 though, because it is incredible for everything else, and personally, I don't use portrait mode
Honestly you can also use the 2x it crops the 50mp sensor and its great during the day and afternoon but wouldn't recommend using it at night since the pixel bining isnt in use and the pixel size drops from 2.4 microns to 1.2 and i have tested every way and every mode on the 7 pro so trust me its no good at night 80% of the time since the details arent there from the extra noise reduction! Also that doesn't just zoom and crunch up everything like in portrait mode plus u get a 50mm equivalent wheres the 1x in portrait mode gives u a 35mm and the 2x button does give you a 75mm equivalent so using the normal 3x just combines the 2x sensor crop with the 5x and if you look for it you can see the difference where the pictures are stiched together but its not a big deal! The detail looks much more natural if you use the 2x and 3x from the normal camera and add the portrait effect later in Google photos... Fyi if you use the portrait mode just use the face retouching feature it smooths all the imperfections the extra sharpness brings out on faces but hair remains the same and u have a subtle and smooth option if your lazy and dont feel like editing every picture on your own so for social media it does the job...hope this helps somebody😅
I went to that lineage os(with the google apps mind the gapps zip package) train and for me its working better. And PS I'm not a sponser or developer of it. I bought an unlocked pixel 7 pro to use custom roms. I also tried calyx os for microg and go back and forth.
