''Dance, as though no one is watching,
Love, as though you've never been hurt before,
Sing, as though no one can hear you,
Work, as though you don't need the money,
Live, as though heaven is on earth. ''
    Rumi

Mevlana Jalaluddin Rumi, a Sufi Spiritual Master, is my Spiritual Guide and Mentor. To be precise, Faqir means beggar, who is timeless, there is no desire for having palace, wealth, fame or anything, which belongs to this mortal.
Rumi says: Do not feel lonely, the entire universe is inside you. The Prophets accept all agony and trust it. For the water has never feared the fire.

    Mashallah, nicely said.
kur'an (fard) and hadith (sunna) on first place.
without that no one can call him self dervish (sufi).

    Inside water, a waterwheel turns.
A star circulates with the moon.
We live in the night ocean wondering,
    What are these lights?
    ~ ~ ~
    Walk to the well.
Turn as the earth and the moon turn,
    circling what they love.
Whatever circles comes from the center.
    ~ ~ ~
    Dance, when you're broken open.
Dance, if you've torn the bandage off.
Dance in the middle of the fighting.
    Dance in your blood.
    Dance, when you're perfectly free.
    - Rumi

Ironically, many posts here point to one of the things Rumi derided most - the feeling of possession. What he advocated was sharing, sharing of knowledge, of thoughts, of kind deeds. Here all this talk is about where he was from - Turk, Persian, Afghani. It does NOT matter much that he was born in Balkh (Afghanistan), wrote in Persian and lived in Konya (today's Turkey).
It matters a LOT that cord he touches us as human beings. His wisdom and kindness. Let's talk about that! Peace, Salaam.

Mevlana was a Persian not a Turk or Afghan.
His poems are in Farsi also , this wirling is performed mostly by Turkish sufi's (dervis as in darwish in farsi) Also by Iranian and Syrian as you see.
His tomb is in Konya Turkey , he is a holy man , the tomb is well know for his big green roof.

Because this was an performance in the city of Damascus. Then people there ( Syria) can understand the poem. And when the Koran is well interpreted it is one long poem of love, like Rumi's poems. May Peace Be Upon You

Just a quick note, this is a religious practice based on the humanist philosophy developed by Mevlana Celaleddin-i Rumi in Anatolia (today's Turkey) in the 13th century. , For more info, Search Google: Mevlana.

His full name is Moulana Jalaluddin-e Balkhi. He was neither Persian, Iranian or Turk. He is called Balkhi because he was from Balkh, Khorasan present day Afghanistan. Everybody grow up and enjoy his beautiful poems and don't fall for whatever you read in his biography on internet because they can't be trusted specially wikipedia.

historical fact- rumi was born in balkh as was already said. that is modern day AFGHANISTAN. during his life he traveled the world, "rumi" is the name he got from chillin in ROMAN Anatolia. he was influenced by pERSIAN sufi poets (see Attar from Khorasan, IRAN) and is considered a persian poet. all of his poems are originally written in persian (also spoken in AFGHAN.) unless he's freestyling in ARABIC. he left his mark in turkey too- the man like other sufis at the time- lived without borders

Hear! hear! I certainly agree with you. Well said! It is quite obvious that most these comments stem from sheer ignorance. They haven't really studied or know anything about the subject (any subject), yet they dare make comments that only shows how little they know and how poor their general knowledge is. It is a shame, as these people have access to the internet and obviously time to spare, but don't bother to take advantage of the vast amount of resources available to them and learn.

@DrSolare Your right, but he was born in the village Vakhsh in tajikistan, this is the border of Afghanistan. People in that village is afghani to this day. So his nationality is actually Afghani. But this is not surprising, as the head cover he wears and garments comes from the Zoroastrian religion which influenced the fghanistan and iranian areas.

Baris OZGUR. The wrong whirling is now only found in Turkey, where performances and sufism are forbidden since 1924, What you see there are members of the Türk Folklor Kurumu performing a kind of ballet. If you don't wanna critisize, know that there is no more original whirling as there are more original Mevlevi's since 1924...

capeheartriz usually the whirling dervishes they perform without audience, discreetly. It wasn't suppose to be shown to people as it could cause confusion in the society, espescially the layman. Most of dzikr or remembrance done from tariqas, they don't show openly to the layman. It is not for layman but for the people who follow the way of the sufis .
