  • 2023 marks a milestone for Pathfinder Railtours, as they celebrate 50 years of operations. As such, their railtour season for the year has featured some varied and wonderful additions to help mark the occasion, with ‘The Pembroke Coast Explorer’ being no exception. Traction for the tour would be provided by West Coast Railways, with a trio of locomotives from their stables: Class 33’s - 33025 & 33029, and Class 47 - 47813.
The tour started out of Salisbury with the pair of 33’s providing the power for the entire outbound leg to Pembroke Dock. This saw the pair travelling via Westbury, Bath, Newport, Carmarthen, and Tenby. 47813 would then bring the tour back to Tenby for a layover period, before leading the tour onward to Swansea. From here, the 33 duo would regain command for the charge back to Salisbury.
Rising with the morning sun, the ’Crompton’ pair put in a fine performance for their first showing through Bapton, as they climbed away from Salisbury. Latterly, at Twerton, a similarly good performance would be had as the pair exited the tunnel, getting away from a passenger stop at Bath. Moving on to the return leg, 47813 would lead the tour through Ferryside, laying down the power as it skirted the River Towy. With the 33’s back in charge, the pair would race the setting sun as they hammered through Newton St Loe. Finally, in the last glimpse of light for the day, the duo provided some spectacular acoustics as they thrashed their way up Upton Scudamore.
All footage filmed on Sunday the 6th of August 2023.
