Great video thank you! I do a mix... I prune the L until my plant has so much fruit it can’t seem to ripen because it’s so loaded it’s working too hard, ( so much fruit 🤣 !) THEN I temporarily prune the new (just the newest not the existing) suckers until the fruit starts to ripen again... then proceed pruning just the L. 🍅 ❤️
You have changed the way I deal with suckers. Now I do not view them as a thing that merely sucks...I view them as potential yumminess. I may not keep all of them, but I am totally adding this to my San Marzano and Amish Paste Tomatoes care routing. Thank you!
Last year I did a test on 2 identical plants. 1 with pruned suckers and the other I did not touch at all. The one that I did not touch produced a lot more (maybe double the fruit) exactly like you said here and also seemed to be healthier. I didn't notice any size difference either but I will test that this year. I personally will not remove any more suckers from now on except at the base of the plant. Great video!
More fruit! I just cut off some suckers today. This is my first container garden, and in doing research, I wondered why I would want to cut off suckers if they were literally kind of producing another plant. I'll be cutting off that side stem instead now! With the exception of beefsteak tomatoes, it's been my personal experience that smaller tomatoes are more flavorful than larger ones. Thank you for video. Growing my first garden this year. I only have one plant because i did not know anything. But i've learned allot through just 2 of your vids so far. This and the snap peas. And yes i only planted one of those also. Im in that big learning curve. 😂
I definitely wish I had seen this a few years ago lol... I ended up doing both last year, we planted 4 plants as usual and pruned the suckers from 2 of them and let 2 go... It was a fun experiment. I meant to comment last year but forgot about this video. Just stumbled on it again refreshing my memory on what to do... This is our 4th year to grow tomatoes.... The first year shouldn't even count it was such a bad year! We did everything in the worst way, not having cages, or ferts, or soil/compost, mulch... Etc.... Basically we just planted them and watered them lol.... I am surprised we got the few we did out of those 4 plants! I think we got about 8 or 9 from everything that didn't get ruined or eaten before we got them! We have learned a lot since then.... With this being one of the best tips, for us! Having more tomatoes to be able to share with friends and family ... This year I think I am only going to prune the suckers on 1 of the plants we just planted today and let the other 3 do what they do and focus on the leaves and shaping and stuff. *EDIT* I thought I would add that the reason we like some bigger tomatoes is just personal preference for tomato sandwiches and BLT's and stuff... I love that the tomato is as big as the bread so that you only need one big thick slice lol.... Easier to control the messiness, i always end up having to try and hold multiple smaller ones in the sandwich because i would just about put a whole tomato on my sandwich if i could get away with it 😂.
If it's too hot the blooms fall off and don't set. Most tomato plants I grew did this when night's temp gets above 72 degrees. Get a summerset or another for hot weather

Does the method of leaving the suckers make a shorter plant since the energy is being split into all the suckers?
Not at all. My plants easily make it past 7-8ft.
