I'm realy looking forward to a video where you explain more about the angles and how that makes you opt for certain bits. This video burns all those that think a spade bit is an instrument of torture.

Iv done a little of those angle videos but they are still in the editing stage. Im sure glad to maybe open a few eyes about the spade bit. Your support means a lot to me.

Right? Most any bit can be torture in the wrong hands. On the flip side, a rider with good hands/feel can ride a horse with wire in mouth and never hurt the horse.
Appreciate the talk about the messed up bars on this mare and how that informs bit decision. Too many don't take into account individual horses anatomy when selecting a bit.

One of my favorite horses was a washed out Gay bar king gelding. Put him to work. Was really touchy at first about his face and your feet but soon stopped worrying about it. Good horse. Thats a nice mare. Looking forward to seeing more. Im doing same to a 15 year old. Now im rethinking my bit choice.

Those Gay bar kings could be tough to be around but dang they made nice sticks. Im sure proud of that little mare. E-mail me if you wanna talk shop about bits and angles.

Why do you turn the horse into flexion? meaning, turn her toward her hollow side.. A true turn on the haunch is always away from the side that the horse is laterally flexed toward. The true turn on the haunch is also called a pirouette. Practice it.

Bret, this is the first time I have ever seen someone just put a horse in the 2 rein. Your confidence is amazing. I don't know if I could ever do it but I enjoy the way you take some of the mysticism out of things. This horse is looking like a spade bit horse and this is the first time?????? amazing.

Like I say in the video, she is really broke but had never been ridden in a spade or a two rein outfit. I was confident because I know the horse but I would say most any broke ranch horse can be put in the spade in a very short time.

Fun video good job explaining and demonstrating. evidently I'm missing you on another channel? I'll try and navigate my way over there.
Side note I got a great cowboy hat too mine looks better on a rack. If I hadn't heard your voice wouldn't of recognized you. Personally I liked your choice of fashion ..uncommon hats and your grandna sweaters.
Your still my favorite cowboy to watch!
Thanks for the video great stuff

I'd very much appreciate a video on broken bars. My horse has some of the same behaviors and I've been puzzling what his problem is. I've not had the same problems with other horses I've ridden so it's not just me as a rider. I'd also appreciate some words on the pros and cons or "retraining" a horse into the bridle. Some people say you can't but never go into why or why not one should consider it. If this was on the patreon I'd gladly pay for it, if you weren't willing to go into detail for free. Thanks for all you do.

You bet, Im glad you like it. Find any horse dentist and they can give you a better "hands on" idea of broken bars. So glad to hear you get some good out of these videos.

Interesting. I have seen the bit selection based on the horse's head shape/breed but not the angle of the shoulder. Nice mover. El bosalito.

    • @HorsemanshipAsAnArt
      @HorsemanshipAsAnArt  Рік тому +2

I learned the bigger diameters are El Bosolito and the smaller La Bosalita. Just how I learned it doesn't make it correct. I catch heck for aglising things but most of my early schooling in this style of horsemanship was in Spanish. I have also worked with Mexican Vaqueros from several different parts of the country and heard it pronounced differently, the same goes for the time I spent in South America and Spain. In Argentina we called a halter Una Bosal. Point is it all depends on your accent.

Majinny is what it's called, named after Sam Majinny. Im not sure about the spelling but any research on the internet I have tried has come up with a little info on Sam and none on the bit. What I know about the bit and Sam comes from old men that knew him when he was an old man. The bit that brooks brothers makes in there cowboy collection is pretty close but not quite. Rod Tuessuer made both of mine and has the pattern off the original. He won't build them for just anybody he quizzes a guy first. What I like about his bits is they come already broke in, a lot of bit makers build them so tight it takes ten years to make them feel right.

@@HorsemanshipAsAnArt Thanks…I think he said that those ones were very expensive but there was a factory made one that was pretty good…a Gava or something? The Canadian maker I was thinking of of Brooks Silver

Grijava is the name of the one I was using. By factory made I mean semi production as he is also a custom maker. I think they go for around $600. The Brooks "cowboy collection" are production built and very good. I am not sure on the cost.@@thiesenteam

Love the vid. I don't understand the psychology behind the different types of 'bits' that you use, or why they are used in the first place. I love horses, I'm not a horsey person.

well I would love to sit down and spell out all the why's and what for's but that would be a little much for a UA-cam response. I will sit down and do a video explaining a bunch of that if you please and maybe that will help. Search the archives a little and you will find a few videos that may help you understand a little better. Thanks for the comment.

Where can I find out more about this angle of the shoulder influencing what kind of bit that sits better in a horse's mouth? My guy has a lot of shoulder but not too much up hill. He is just in a fat snaffle adjusted pretty low on the tongue.

As far as I know there are no books or videos about it. I am working on both a book and have done a few videos that are yet to be edited. Everything I know is from talking to old masters and trial and error with horses. Keep watching we will have more on the subject in the future
