As a Brit living in NL, I think I understand constitutional monarchy, and I respect the work of the royal family and their contribution to the culture. I’ve learned some of the history of the dutch queens in the 20c and it helps me understand my new home and it’s people. Bedank.
The reason is that in 1934 prince Hendrik von Mecklenburg, Queen Wilhelmina's husband, wanted a white funeral. The Queen was so impressed (she seldom was) so she also wanted a white funeral herself. That happened in the early '60. The funeral coach was also white, but Queen Beatrix changed the colour. Now a sort of blue. What the rest of the world thinks? This is a Dutch royal funeral, not a world event.
The funeral is in the church of Delft, where all Orange members have been buried since 1584. And Delft is located between The Hague and Rotterdam. The soldiers in ceremonial uniform therefore paraded about 10 km from Noordeinde Palace in The Hague to Delft.
I really feel for Beatrix, she lost her husband Prince Claus in 2002 aged 76.She lost her Mother Juliana in March 2004 aged 94.She lost her Father Prince Bernhard in December 2004 aged 93. The Netherlands has had three queens before the present King Willem Alexander. Wilhelmina (1890-1948) Juliana (1948-1980) Beatrix(1980-2013 ) and after the present King it will be a Queen again,as the Kings has three daughters!

Hi there. The music in the church for the funeral was beautiful. Can anyone tell me the name of the hymn sung by the choir as the Royal Family left the church at the end of the service??
Is “Queen Mother” quite the right title in the Netherlands? Here, the title is reserved for a Queen Consort who is the mother of the current reigning Sovereign, but not, usually, the grandmother of the current Sovereign. Queen Mary did not assume the title of “Queen Grandmother” on the death of King George VI and the accession of her grand-daughter, Queen Elizabeth II. She then ceased to be referred to as “The Queen Mother” and then became simply “Queen Mary”. I always heard Queen Juliana referred to following her abdication simply as “Princess Juliana”. The title “Queen” would have been inappropriate, since she had not been a Queen Consort.
In the spring of 1975, a group of South Moluccans were caught conspiring to steal a heavy truck and ram the gates of Soestdijk Palace to kidnap the queen. Ten members of the group in a vehicle full of firearms were arrested. The group's alleged aim was to force the Dutch government to recognize the Republik Maluku Selatan (RMS) as an independent state and try to make the Indonesian government do the same. Seventeen South-Moluccan youngsters were tried and convicted and sentenced to up to six years imprisonment. She was lucky to be on vacation in Italy
She was born a princess, then she was a queen consort (never queen regnant) later "three days before King William died on 23 November 1890, queen Emma became regent for her incapacitated husband. She continued her regency into the reign of his successor, their underage daughter, Wilhelmina, until Wilhelmina's eighteenth birthday on 31 August 1898. After her daughter became queen, Emma became queen-mother again, which she became after the death of her husband (the king). She was a regent as a queen consort, later after the death of the king as a queen mother.
So Juliana abdicated in favor of her daughter Beatrix and she has also abdicated? I mean no disrespect by my question but it that considered normal? Is it a means of retirement or was there another reason? Again I mean no disrespect I'm just curious, thank you
Dutch kings abdicate when they are of old age and their successor is ready to take over. Only two out of six did not, William II died after an accident at a relative young age, William III could not abdicate because his successor was only ten years old when he died. William I, Wilhelmina, Juliana and Beatrix all abdicated at old age. So, in the Netherlands it is normal for a king to abdicate. When 'the King' is female we call her Queen and her consort Prince.

It was absolutely disgusting and inappropriate how female members of the Dutch royal family wore white clothing during the funeral. Black is the Colour of mourning, not white.
Not in the Netherlands. Here, people believe life should be celebrated rather than mourned. In old school Dutch Protestantism, as the Royals are, the belief is that God gives solace. If you are a true believer, you take comfort in the fact that you'll see your loved ones again. So a funeral is a celebration of life. Not a finality.

It is a hearse. What do you think was used traditionally, before motor vehicles were invented?
In the UK, members of the Royal Family generally have their coffins carried on a gun carriage. It that better or worse that a purpose-built hearse?
Once again people thinking "their way" is better. Each royal family has its customs. Enjoy the pageantry and keep your snide remarks to yourself.
Dutch people have feelings? How come?
What amazes you so..?
all is a show ...
Witch!
queens and kings ?really the corupts, the ones who inflict pain to their subdits ......
Cheer up, Ariel 😌
That would be politicians, actually.....
Centuries ago, white used to be the colour before black
The funeral of the mother of Juliana in 1962 of Wilhelmina was also in white ,the funeral procession, the hearse and horses
It's absolutely disgusting that people like you try and force your customs on others.
In the Netherlands White at a funeral is acceptable.
😭😓
