- Turning a way that I was mishearing a riff for years into some thoughts on Opeth's compositional craft and what the role of music theory can be.
That cool live video I use is below. In that, they actually get slower and slower as the riff goes on, which makes it feel even more like we're also sinking lower and lower.
• Opeth - A Fair Judgeme...
Opeth is the single most listened to band in my life. I don't know, during my studies I listened to their discography for three years daily.
Speaking of endlessly descending riffs, there's a riff about a minute into Ivory Tower on Meshuggah's Violent Sleep of Reason that I love for this reason.
Oh yeah I know the one!
Shepard's scale
People often talk about the outro in Deliverance, but this one...
Man, this one is heavy as shit. Has more of a doom metal feel to it.
Opeth and Type O Negative are my two favorite fall season bands.
From what I can hear, the first F# power chord is played on frets 224, so it’s an inverted B power chord with the fifth on the sixth string
Ooh I think you're right... this is one of those riffs I learned from a tab a long time ago and have been playing this way so long I think it changed how I was hearing the recording, but it does sound like there's a B in there instead of a C#. But still an F# in the doubled upper guitar part. I wonder why they did that... maybe to make that one chord just a little crunchier? I can't think of a reason why a B power chord would make more harmonic sense there, especially when there's an F# in the bass and the melody. Maybe to give a more gradual transition to tonicizing F#? Thanks for pointing that out!
@@metalmusictheory5401 to my ear, playing an inverted B5 achieves some cool voice leading of sorts. Before that chord you have a Bb then an A, so the B sounds all kinds of fucked up in a good way
@@Meshuggapeth Ooh that's a good point, I like that
Meshuggah in the name, AFX in the picture....... nice
i have always viewed heavy metal as a fine art and you are expressing it greatly. very well done . most metal heads don't know the notes they are playing let alone the theory behind it. this is definitely carving the path for a more academic approach to heavy metal.
Another interesting progression of deceptive non-resolutions and modulations that pretend to resolve to the open "e" string, but actually seamlessly modulates to the 4th scale degree is the first 2 minutes of Sun of Nothing from BTBAM. I'd love to hear your analysis on that section.
Yo, how did I JUST discover you?
Haha thanks so much for watching! Just started making these a few months ago so probably just because I'm new in town!
@@metalmusictheory5401 You are a great addition! Looking forwards to your future videos!
All hail the algorithm...
Yup, this one of the best youtube channels I've ever seen
Pd: as a recommendation, you look a bit tense while talking to the camera, try to be more relaxed ;)
Thanks! And lol it's because I'm reading from a script, it saves a lot of time, but I'm working on it!
@@metalmusictheory5401 I actually like that about your videos :D at least I like it more than that fake acting "hey guyyyss! I'm your best friend from the youtube-fam" (:
Love this channel man. Keep it up. Super cool
Phenomenal work on all the videos I’ve seen so far and fucken oath to the Mizmor shirt
It's so nice to find this video. when that album came out I drove my friends nuts by making them listen to that outro riff. The first band I've truly loved since the first four metallica albums. which is another great study if you really give a deep listen to metallicas 'implied' rhythm styles
Bruh, i really love your content. Btw, thanks for that side note, it probably gave me more than the rest of the video lol :))
you're awesome dude. just finished your meshuggah video and now this, instant subscribe
more opeth please! love the channel
Finally somebody who knows what a power chord actually is
Great stuff. Love the analysis. I also think that its worth noting that this riff could have also been partially inspired by the intro to "Out of Touch" by Death from the Individual Thought Patterns album.
Great channel
As Opeth fan, I'm glad to found you
You are the channel I wish I had created
Im listening to opeth all the time
A beautiful sephard effect
Great content
Thanks you too
What software do you use for tabs, as well as on-screen versions of these tabs, such as 2:00? I've tried TuxGuitar, but the progress bar is hard to follow
Guitar Pro! It has its quirks but overall very useful.
Best part is that Mikael Akerfeldt does not have a formal music education and here we are..
Can u analize toista maata from mokoma?
What I find peculiar is that this riff is 9 bars long which is kind of weird, but works out nicely.
i think the first time i heard something similar was the i am the walrus ending or i want you
Oh yeah those are great examples, hadn't listened to either in a while but definitely a similar sort of effect!
feeding algorithm nom nom
If you’re into them I’d love to see some dissecting of Beneath the Massacres latest album Fearmonger. Any song!
Love them, and that album was one of my favorites from the past year!
