I have recently fitted the rails, crossbars, and am fitting a roof top tent this weekend, battery power and solar etc. My Tyre choice was the Atturo Trail Blade XT, though I did look at the Geolanders. Hi Bob, its not a strict full time 4wheel-drive system, no. During normal driving the majority of power is run to rear wheels (I have been told this is around 80%), the remaining power (20%) is sent to the front wheels, however when the system detects a need for a shift in power the Haldex controls that appropriately and will adjust the power ratio to each wheel.
Hi Bob just figured I should mention that if you're a facebook user you would be very welcome to join my recently made group - 'Freelander 2 OffRoad Group - FL2ORG' it would be a good place for you to ask questions like this and get any other info you might need on the FL2 when it comes to taking them away from the tarmac roads! facebook.com/groups/354952682390021/?ref=share
@@JoelSelfOutdoorInstructor You see, that's your biggest problem... You have a Haldex as your centre diff :( Same as the VW city 4x4's. Get a Full Locker in center, a full locker in the rear and a Haldex in Front! Then you are talking... My Duster comes out with a Center Diff Locker and for 300 pound I installed a LockRight locker in the rear axle and another 340 pounds got me a Torsen in front! Here in Africa you won't make it past the 1st sand dune with a build like that. Looks good on grass though...
@@MrGoMariothough I appreciate what you're getting at I beg to differ with regards to the dunes. Online I see quite a number of FL2s driving in deserts, beaches (sand in general) and they cope with it brilliantly. - I run the 'Freelander 2 Offroad Group' and our members regularly post videos and photos of their days in the rough. (This includes our Australian and South African members who seem to regularly drive in the sand.) - The key feature to note is that in deep snow or very soft sand you can turn off the DSC (Dynamic Stability Control) which allows you to get through these types of terrain more easily. - Obviously in addition to the 'given' factors (good tyres, correct tyre pressures, correct terrain response mode and appropriate driver skill level.) 👍
Hi Steve, I would say so yes, the way that it actually turned out for me was that MuddyMods fitted mine as they were installing my lift kit at the same time, just made sence to do the lot. (I didnt fancy attempting the lift myself!) Having seen how the sliders are mounted up it shouldn't be a drama for someone who's a bit handy. 👍
Looks great! Does the coil spacers for the lift detract from the beautiful suspension feel? (I'm obviously aware the centre of gravity is higher, which would affect the feel... but talkong more about ride comfort etc)
Hi Tim, thanks for the question! Yes comfort is still 11/10! 😉 - In all seriousness with tge home made roof rack's weight and tge lift combined I used a set if 30mm wheel spacers to counteract that overly top-heavy feeling. She sways about abit, but then she always did! Personally I love the smooth drive and standard soft suspension set up...
Nice video Joel. Whilst I don't have an FL2 it has given me some ideas for my FL1. I do have to ask one question, do you get any bother having your license plate up on the roof rack?
Hi @The-Observer, good question but no I've had no issues from it, infact quite a number of vehicles around my way have the plate mounted up in the same kind of position. 👍 I hope that helps, all the best with your FL1 build!
Hi Jiro The FL2, as you mention, doesn't have Low-range - however if you have an Auto and Land Rover's terrain response system then they are more than capable in the rough - and in some situations it makes the driving easier than just having a straight low-range... to really top it off though having my oversized tyres, this means I maintain traction so much better and really can crawl through obsitcals in the same way as you can with low-ratio... I have yet to come up against an obstical I couldn't negotiate because of a lack of low-range. To see the vehicle in action and really get a handle on its capabilities check out my FL2 playlist but particularly this recent clip I uploaded - ua-cam.com/video/RlKeXvU04uw/v-deo.html I hope that all helps! If you have any other questions then be sure to ask!
Hi Jiro just figured I should mention that if you're a facebook user you would be very welcome to join my recently made group - 'Freelander 2 OffRoad Group - FL2ORG' - might have some useful information on there for you! facebook.com/groups/354952682390021/?ref=share
I think I must have bought the last set of lamp guards in the world. There was one set available in the US. I now have a newer FR2 and could do with a set for that. (I still own the earlier one) Please tell me where I can find them!
Hi John These lamp gaurds are readily available for the Freelander 2 but only one shape exists for the front and for the back so depending on your light type. Particularly the rear was changed on later models, you need to be sure you they will look right before buying. Rears can be attained on Ebay from a multitude of suppliers from £20-£50. The front ones can be bought from the likes of MuddyMods (www.muddymods.com) but again ensure you'll be happy with the look and how they line up with your lights before fitting. The pre-facelift and post facelift front gaurds are aesthetically the same but mount differently on account of the different shaped grill. If you need more information or would just like to chat more about the Freelander 2 then you'd be very welcome to join us in the 'Freelander 2 OffRoad Group (FL2ORG)' on Facebook! We have thousands of members and a great community of owners! 😁👍🚜
@@JoelSelfOutdoorInstructor Thanks Joel. The FR2 I've recently bought is exactly the same model as the 57 plate one I have with the fitted lampguards, so I need another identical set. I'll check out muddy mods. My aim is to use the newer model 58 plate one kitted out as a camper type of vehicle and convert the 57 plate one to something similar to yours, since I'm off road and fishing/shooting quite a bit. I don't do Facebook (my wife does!), but wouldn't mind joining up on one of your trips. I have AT General grabbers on that but with some modification I may well fit those Yokohamas.
Hi John You'd be very welcome to get involved. If your wife wants to join us in the group you can keep upto date with trips and events! Hi Joshua Sadly this landy isnt very budget freindly so it probably isnt the best motor for a student - MPG is not great, many get about 24-26mpg, I get 20mpg... that in itself costs a lot but add onto that the cost of repairs and modifications it really mounts up! If you're very spanner handy and have the space to do work on it yourself then it could be a great vehicle for you! Hi Joel. Thank you so much for this video. I wanted to ask, did your FL2 come with those wheels, or did you order them? My 2008 has 19", and have found it rather difficult to find 17" wheels. I keep considering if it's better to buy non-LR steel ones instead. Thanks!
Hi @Doctor! Im glad to hear you enjoyed the video! With regards to the wheels yes I purchased mine with 17" rims, many I've seen have 18" and 19" though, I believe these were all available sizes direct from LR when the vehicles were new. Are you a member of the facebook group 'Freelander 2 Owners Group' (FL2OG)? If not i suggest hopping on there its a great group to get info and meet other keen FL2 owners... but possibly more important to you right now they have a sales page where Im certain you could find some 17" alloy rims (and Im sure you could get some advice on steel ones too!) I hope that helps! If you need any more info or have more questions then please dont hesitate to get in touch! 👍
Great question @basvandervoort, unfortunately one with a poor anwser, the spot lights arn't yet wired in! They are all set for it and have been on the to-do list for a while now but I just havent finished connecting them up. Apoligies I cant be of more help on that front. 👍
Joel Self - Outdoor Instructor thanks for the quick reply. I did have rooftop lights on my subaru forester and i attached the cables trough the the tailgate of the car. I put the wire along my roofrack from the front to the back of the car. It worked, but you still saw the cable at the tailgate of the car. It was just a few cm’s.. it’s not a perfect solution, but it worked. I’m having a FR2 now and i would like to install new rooflights like you did. Please send me a update (or make a video, that’s even better 😉) if you have a solution. Did you installed the lights on the grill already?
Nice one@@basvandervoort! No unfortunately those front strobes might be comming off, the lights themselves were only cheap and before I even started considering wiring them in I had one start condensating on the inside and having hooked it up temporarily to test it it only works intermitently - so they will be a bin or replacment job. I'll be sure to give you a heads up as and when the lights do get wired in! 👍
Joel Self - Outdoor Instructor looking forward to the updates. I juste made a subscription on your channel. And: don’t but the strobes from ali express. Haha 😂
Haha dont worry I wont@@basvandervoort ! (These were actually purchased as part of a kit along with the brackets, a bit dissapointed.) But no, I'll pick up some quality ones at some stage. Stay well and thanks for the sub, really appreciate that! 👍

Hi JA No problem at all! Infact they work brilliantly! I'll certainly never be dropping back to standard sizing. These really are the buisness when it comes to driving in the rough! 👍
I'm in US, anyone knows any models of winch and mounting brackets that will fit 2015 LR2? Any places in Michigan or California that will do these modifications? Seems like it's so difficult to find stuff for LR2 in US...appreciate any help!
@Adeline Nicholas, I had a 02 Mazda Tribute (Sold in the USA as a Ford Escape)! - Really fun vehicle! 😁 Mind you whats that got to do with this video? 🤣👍
Hi PyroPlays, thanks for your question! 😁👍 The FL2 is a great vehicle and I love mine to bits. Very capable on the road and off the road BUT I can see some 'cons' to it as a first car - some of those are based upon your driving experiance and vehicle needs (so some such as size might actually be positives.) • They are big vehicles and handle like it too! • They are expensive to run (poor MPG and being a landrover they do need repairs from time to time!) • They have 'large engines' -, atleast as far as UK insurance companies are concerned for new drivers (2.2L) • They are addictive! LandRover life is something you'll easily get sucked into and you'll find yourself modifying them and getting involved in all sorts of silly days out in the mud! • They are (depending on the company) expensive to insure for young drivers. Now all of that said I think you'd love owning one. They are brilliant in so many ways, just be prepared for those things listed above. I've always owned 4x4s since I started driving and this is by far the best of them as far as comfort and capabilities go. I've done some other videos about the FL2 so do check out the rest of the channel if that's of interest to you. And if you have any other questions do let me know and I'll do everything I can to help! 👍

Nice video Joel. The Muddy Mods rock sliders..... are the an easy home install if your a practical kinda guy?
Hi Steve, I would say so yes, the way that it actually turned out for me was that MuddyMods fitted mine as they were installing my lift kit at the same time, just made sence to do the lot. (I didnt fancy attempting the lift myself!)
Having seen how the sliders are mounted up it shouldn't be a drama for someone who's a bit handy. 👍
Steve you can see them in action at:
ua-cam.com/video/BQa30GhgwIQ/v-deo.html
@@JoelSelfOutdoorInstructor Thanks for your reply. Yep that helps clear things up for me.
with no Low range, does it make FLD2 somewhere in trouble??
Hi Jiro
The FL2, as you mention, doesn't have Low-range - however if you have an Auto and Land Rover's terrain response system then they are more than capable in the rough - and in some situations it makes the driving easier than just having a straight low-range... to really top it off though having my oversized tyres, this means I maintain traction so much better and really can crawl through obsitcals in the same way as you can with low-ratio... I have yet to come up against an obstical I couldn't negotiate because of a lack of low-range.
To see the vehicle in action and really get a handle on its capabilities check out my FL2 playlist but particularly this recent clip I uploaded - ua-cam.com/video/RlKeXvU04uw/v-deo.html
I hope that all helps! If you have any other questions then be sure to ask!

could you please tell me how to get this roof rack? ;)
Unfortunately this one I made from a larger rack I bought as Scrap! It was modified to this size & shape!
Ahh okay - turned out nice dude 😁👍🏻
I think I must have bought the last set of lamp guards in the world. There was one set available in the US. I now have a newer FR2 and could do with a set for that. (I still own the earlier one) Please tell me where I can find them!
Hi John
These lamp gaurds are readily available for the Freelander 2 but only one shape exists for the front and for the back so depending on your light type.
Hi John
You'd be very welcome to get involved. If your wife wants to join us in the group you can keep upto date with trips and events! (Aswell as mechanical advice, modification ideas etc.)
Also I've got to ask but are you John Craddock of John Craddock Ltd? (Landy parts suppliers?) If so you can also use the group to advertise (within certain peramiters). Feel free to drop me an email at joelself.outdoorinstructor@gmail.com if you'd like to discuss that.
(Its free!)
All the best with your search for lamp gaurds, Im sure warren and Chell from MuddyMods will be able to help you out, very knowledge folks and well regarded in the Freelander world. 😁👍🚜
hey joel. would you get this car as a student ? i have enought money for the car itself in good condition
.cheers!
Hi Joshua
Sadly this landy isnt very budget freindly so it probably isnt the best motor for a student - MPG is not great, many get about 24-26mpg, I get 20mpg... that in itself costs a lot but add onto that the cost of repairs and modifications it really mounts up!
If you're very spanner handy and have the space to do work on it yourself then it could be a great vehicle for you! You'll certsinly fall in love with it, they havw that classic landy charm about them!
For buying advice and other anwsers you might be looking for check out the facebook group I run - "Freelander 2 OffRoad Group (FL2ORG)" the owners there will be able to provide you a wealth of knowledge.

@@JoelSelfOutdoorInstructor Thanks Joel Self
If not i suggest hopping on there its a great group to get info and meet other keen FL2 owners... but possibly more important to you right now they have a sales page where Im certain you could find some 17" alloy rims (and Im sure you could get some advice on steel ones too!)
I hope that helps! If you need any more info or have more questions then please dont hesitate to get in touch! 👍
Joel Self - Outdoor Instructor, did the change in tire size affect the speedometer accuracy? If so, how did you adjust?
Thanks for the question Michael, I haven't had an issue with the speedometer being out, no. 👍
How did you installed the cables from the roof lights? I’m wondering how you bring them inside the car.
Cool mods.

Have you had any problems with the large tyres since they’re so much larger than LR advises? They look great 👍🏽
Hi JA
No problem at all! Infact they work brilliantly! I'll certainly never be dropping back to standard sizing. These really are the buisness when it comes to driving in the rough! 👍
@@JoelSelfOutdoorInstructor that's great news. No problems with gearing?
@@Retorter no all's well on that front, I do have the auto mind, but its absolutely a dream to drive still. 👍
I'm in US, anyone knows any models of winch and mounting brackets that will fit 2015 LR2? Any places in Michigan or California that will do these modifications? Seems like it's so difficult to find stuff for LR2 in US...appreciate any help!
MuddyMods in the UK ship internationally and are, to the best of my knowledge, the only company who currently make a winch mount for the LR2. 👍
It's my 05 Ford Escape!!!
@Adeline Nicholas, I had a 02 Mazda Tribute (Sold in the USA as a Ford Escape)! - Really fun vehicle! 😁
Mind you whats that got to do with this video? 🤣👍
Would a Freelander 2 make a good 1st car? Also in the UK so insurance might be a pain. Cheers Joel :)
Hi PyroPlays, thanks for your question! 😁👍
The FL2 is a great vehicle and I love mine to bits. Very capable on the road and off the road BUT I can see some 'cons' to it as a first car - some of those are based upon your driving experiance and vehicle needs (so some such as size might actually be positives.)
• They are big vehicles and handle like it too!
• They are expensive to run (poor MPG and being a landrover they do need repairs from time to time!)
• They have 'large engines' -, atleast as far as UK insurance companies are concerned for new drivers (2.2L)
• They are addictive!
@@JoelSelfOutdoorInstructor Thank you so much! Great information. I'm into mechanics and mountain biking hahaha so I think a LR would be great for me. Just the insurance may be some trouble, I'll get some quotes. I'll be checking out some of your other videos in the near future! :D
No problem PyroPlays! 👍 Happy to help!
PyroPlays Hiya mate just read your comment. Bought myn 2 yrs ago as a first car when i passed. Cant fault it mate I love myn. Insurence for me worked out cheaper than a hatchback.
@@romaannazir3372 dang that's great news! They only have an insurance group of 19 so pretty low for a bigger car! I'll have a look at them. Thanks again dude

Hello. can I ask? Where to climb the ladder? Thanks Honza
Hi Honza
Thank you for your question. The ladder was made by Mantec. Unfortunately they seem very rare, I know I've purchased the last oje available from new in the UK so depending on where you are an after market parts supplyer may have one in stock - otherwise it will be a case of finding them on Ebay... but like I mentioned above, they are VERY rare. Good luck with your search! They are a great addition to the vehicle particularly if you are loading equipment onto the roof alot. 👍
What is the ground clearance in front? It looks rather low :( My Duster is 11in. Yours looks more like only 10...
