The news anchors seem unmoved because the Lake Isabella/Kernville area is the constant topic of natural disasters. Either fire, snow or rain, its constantly being evacuated. The American Red Cross practically lives in Lake Isabella, where all these evacuees take shelter at the high school

Don't get me wrong, I'm no geologist, but I've watched huge bodies of water disappear in my lifetime.... I have although done a little studying in the past because I was curious as to why in the world anyone would settle in a desert like Iraq, turns out, that whole region was at one time lush and green, destroyed through irresponsible agriculture, similar to what we ad Americans have been doing for generations here, salting our soil. Which results in requiring more water to get viable yields. The point is, generations ago, when modern people found California, they didn't see desert and thing " man is this place beautiful ".... it used to be green with plenty of water.

My response was to your guess that 150 years ago (which means 1873) the amount of water flowing in the Kern River was the same as the amount flowing during the recent flood and that it was flowing at that level "Constantly". There is no evidence for that. One of the main attractions that brought people, meaning white European types, to the Kern River was the search for gold and other mined minerals. Of course there were other reasons too but that it was a green paradise is not one of them. Yes, it is green during spring. After that it is brown and rather hot much of the time.
