Hey,
So thanks for the Christmas/birthday present. Mitsume ga Tooru was a game I was trying to figure out what I played when I visited Vietnam as a child. I was sick due to the water I drank and had one of those 100 Games in 1 consoles to keep me company. Mitsume ga Tooru was one of those games that kept me distracted due to how fun it was. Yeaaaaars later, I was trying to figure out what game it was I played and I looked up the game by false description like "monk with spear platformer." Then you came up and upload this and your intro showed the game! At that point I hoped you showed the game in the list and lo and behold.
Anyway, thanks SNESDrunk, you made this guy nostalgic about his childhood again.
Happy holidays buddy.
Love stories like these!
Don't drink the water. They put something in it... To make you forget...
I don't even remember how I got here
I am from Asia Country. Three Eyes Boy is one of my favorite famicom game, I prefer it more than Megaman. Action Kungfu Jakie Chan, Choujin Sentai Jetman. And both G. l.Joe 1,2 is my Best NES /Famicom Action Games. RPG go for Dragon Ball Z RPG Famicom 1,2,3, Gaiden and Tenchi no Kuru / Dynasty War 1,2.
the WHITES think they know better
Gimmick is being remade for the exA-Arcadia(new arcade platform), I hope it becomes available for a wider audience eventually.
Gimmick!! I always love seeing that game get love, such an absolute gem. The music is incredible and the depth to the gameplay and platforming is crazy. So many people write it off as a cute Kirby clone and don't realize how crazy difficult and rewarding it is. A big recommend from me as well 😄
Not to mention it released a few months before the first Kirby game.
I believe gimmick was developed by 2 or 3 people
I love that SNES Drunk didn't say "Metroidvania." 3:26 He said "Metroid-style exploration game" instead.
Well yeah, Adventure Island doesn't have a whole lot to do with Castlevania
Agreed, most people would say metroidvania when there’s absolutely nothing Castlevania present.
@@Ramjet164 because Castlevania aped Metroids formula so the two franchises are entwined because of it.
Odogaron I am aware of how term was created however if a game has absolutely nothing castlevania about it then it is not a metroidvania style game, it is a metroid style game. Essentially Castlevania gets credit for what it borrowed.
It would be awesome to get a list of affordable games for those of us looking to get the original carts.
Red Bull's Diggin Through The Carts doc interviews the dude who composed the music to Gimmick.
Joy Mech Fight reminds me of Vectorman on genesis.
FYI, there's a Kunio-kun compilation game out there for Switch and PS4 named Kunio-kun: The World Classics. It has _all_ the old NES Kunio-kun games from River City Ransom to dodge ball to this hockey one you talked about. Play Asia sells an "international" version, which is the Asian version with English menus, though I doubt the in-game menus were translated, so buyer beware.
I loved the Soccer fight games. Especially the Banana kick
Even the soccer and samurai games?
@@DRCEQ I'm not sure. Yes to the soccer one, but most of the titles are in Japanese, so...?
my friend had a bootleg famicom that played pirate carts so i grew up playin te kunio series. as a kid and not being ale to read a word of japamese. through trial ad error, the whole nes series of games were fully playable. dont be scared off, they are top nes games.
soccer game is Goal 3 or Kunio-kun no Nekketsu Soccer League.
Love these English Friendly import videos, it's so hard to sift through all the various mahjong and visual novel games for every old system before you find one that you can actually play
That's the idea, thank you for watching
worth noting that even if they're gaijin-friendly, some of these still have translation patches: Moon Crystal, Samurai Pizza Cats, and Holy Diver to say the least
Adventure Island 4, Joy Mech Fight and Mitsume ga Tooru too, actually. I believe the only one that doesn't is the last game, as a matter of fact.
Great list! Thanks! Obake No Qtaro Wan Wan Panic is English Friendly Famicom game as well
Can't lie, I didn't know about most of these and now I'm going to check them out. Thanks again, Drunk! Keep doing you, man! Love this channel!
Great video! Hope Clyde, you, and everyone else is having a good holiday. Take care brother.
D'awww, you should've mentioned how Moon Crystal has those badass Ninja Gaiden cutscenes as well. Truly the best looking game on the NES/Famicom.
"Ninja Gaiden cutscenes"
You mean... 'cutscenes'?
A Gamer Aaron he says NG cutscenes as in they’re in that style, with the film noir/anime style mash up.
@@lordlouie3550 Oh, okay, I see.
A Gamer Aaron I like the style, and it also works because the plot of the three games is pretty darn good. Ninja Gaiden 2 is my favourite NES game of all time, and I’ve played over 100 NES titles, almost all on original hardware.
@@lordlouie3550 good times. Video games are a huge part of life. 🤟
When I was younger, me and my neighbor friend were in searching for Kunio kun game series like Sports, basketball, street fight, football...those were the times. One of the best games on nes!
Dude your vids inspire me no joke
Great list! Thanks! Looking forward to a part 2!
2:24
He said SWAT cats. I am happy now.
I thought there was a 99% chance he was making that one up. Did not expect it to actually be real.
@@Sabith01 yeah I haven't heard it referenced since it originally aired. So it's definitely safe to say it didn't go very far.
I remember loving it as a kid.
Oh gosh, Samurai pizza cats was such a good anime!
It was released in 1991 in France and maybe Italy from what I know.
Characters were nuts and scenarios were brilliantly stupid. It was funnier than TMNT with more actual fights and less shitty jokes.
More on the absurdity of the situations.
What a good show it was...
Thanks for the video again.
Was aired in germany as well, the german intro is fun as hell!
This was such a good episode I'll be down loading a few of these soon 😁👌👍
Love your channel! 💪
Really nice video. Your channel deserves more viewers.
Great video! As always I love clicking on new SNES Drunk content. Keep it up my friend.
What a pretty good video
Pretty, pretty, pretty, pretty good.
The name "Samurai Pizza Cats" makes more sense when you realize the name of the pizza parlor they work for is called "Pizza Cat," even in the original Japanese version. I mean the Japanese name basically translates as "Legendary Cat Ninjas WHAT THE HELL?!?!" Oh, and the fact the name of the place is called Pizza Cat apparently is a very clunky Japanese pun on Pizza Hut, provided you know that Japanese turns western short u sounds into their standard a. So, Pizza Hatto = Pizza Catto. Still, shame the NES was well over its way out by the time Samurai Pizza Cats actually hit the airwaves, otherwise we probably would have got that game.
The thing that baffles me is that the show was bigger in the west than it was in Japan, but Japan still had a crapload of merchandise, but the US only had 2 comics that were back up stories in Power Rangers graphic novels. And even then the comics weren't written by anyone who actually saw an episode, so the characters are all wrong. I heard that Europe, France especially, had some toys. We didn't even get so much as a Kid's Meal promotion by a third party fast food franchise.
I love that the show is available on Amazon Prime. Its just as cheesy and dumb as I remember!
Awesome video! So many of those are just amazing. Need to try them out
I always enjoyed the hilarious insanity that was the Samurai Pizza Cats TV show, so I was excited to discover an NES game based on it. Thank you for giving this some screen time.
Currently in Japan on vacation and definitely have been game hunting. I have a Japan exclusives list I’m searching for and learned of a bunch of those through your vids. Thanks!
Dude, this vid was awesome. Thanks !!!!
So you did it :) I saw it coming anyway, sooner or later. I hope this is just Part 1 because there are many more English-friendly FC games out there. One of my favorites in this category is Layla - an otherwise straightforward action platformer featuring somewhat confusing level design and the ability to use a variety of weapons. And there's also an excellent hack of this game called The Iris Missions with completely redesigned levels and a rocking sountrack, which is one of my favorites on the system.
Happy Belated Christmas. Cool video, I kind of want to check out a few of these
Oh man, I forgot about Moon Crystal. I didn’t even realize it never got released in the US. I just remember playing it long ago.
I Love how Mr.Drunk does all the 2D games, my childhood is realized!
Nothing beats spending quality time with the Famicom during the holiday season.
Ah, "Samurai Pizza Cats." Loved that show as a kid. For the uninitiated, there was an anime called "Kyatto Ninden Teyandee." Saban got the rights to this show and wanted tot dub it into English. One problem. No one on the writing staff spoke Japanese, so they would watch an episode and then write an entirely new script based on what they thought was going on. This led to a gag dub with a ton of fourth wall humour.
to be more precise, the script was sent to the US dubbing team by the studio but it got lost somewhere over the Pacific (this is even referenced in the theme song). The dubbing team actually did have a translator but he wasn't very good at hearing the dialogue as compared to reading it
A friend described Gimmick as "Kirby's Adventure by way of Dark Souls." He's not WRONG, you know. Also, Holy Diver was included on Retro-Bit's Super Retro Cade console, giving you a way to play the game legally if you don't have an NES handy.
That is so awesome! I’ll have to look into the system especially if it has more games by Irem
Also Nintendo Switch online will hopefully get Gimmick soon since we’re quickly receiving all of Sunsoft’s other games (that aren’t movie tie ins)
The sprites on the moon game was doooope. I remember watching Samurai Pizza Cats cartoons on Saturday mornings.
I have a few of these roms. Gimmick , Crisis Force and Mitsume ga Tooru. I’ll have the rest later. Thanks!
Also worth noting: A fan translation of Joy Mech Fight exists too!
Haven't heard of Holy Diver as a game . Nice content as always!
i loved the ike ike hockey. it was so fun.
the different teams had different powers, you unlock them with passwords and you can now play with the powers your previous enemy had. so much fun
Samouraï pizza cats. A cool game.
Have a great day. Happy holidays
The ~English-friendly series was what caught me on this channel, never leaved since then =)
Thank you for these videos. Also, don't forget Devil world.
Nice one I'll look out for them dude
Merry Christmas man!
Ohh, I remember the Samurai Pizza Cats game from back when I downloaded random roms in the 90s. One of the few famicom games I finished. Excellent.
That hockey game looks awesome...Super Dodge Ball is one of my favorite NES games, so I'm glad to know that's a thing!
Total length of video: 614 secs.
Total length of "SNES Drunk": 1.5 sec.
.24% of the video was spent listening to "SNES Drunk."
Man I need to go play some of these, I forgot how fun they are! thanks!
"hm, ive never heard of gimmick. lemme look it up on ebaaAAAAAY OH MY GOD 400 DOLLARS"
thats actually cheaper then I imagined for the current price of it
Reproduction carts, flash carts, multi-carts, and emulation are your friend for these extremely high priced games.
@@TheAlphaOmegaX3 i know, i just like the originals like everyone else
These games definitely do look like a lot of fun
I remember watching the Quest of Ki episode of Game Center CX. That game is BRUTAL.
Ahhh yeah another sweet episode
Joy Mech Fight is one pf my alltime favorite games
my man coming through with the goods
Whoa! They did that floaty limbs thing with Joy Mech Fight just a couple of years before Vectorman and Rayman.
I used to play Moon Crystal a lot. And I mean A LOT, the cutscenes were like a Ghibli movie and therefore endlessly fascinated then-little-me even though I couldn't make sense of the moonrunes; it also had an advantage over Ninja Gaiden by not being ungodly difficult.
Mitsume ga Tooru was pretty much my first exposure to Tezuka, and I didn't even realize that at the time.
While Gimmick was released in some PAL regions as Mr. Gimmick, you don't want to play that version. It is missing a sound chip that the Famicom version has. There is a patch on romhacking.net that switches out the title screen of the JPN version with the PAL title screen, but it's really minor and not really needed.
www.romhacking.net/hacks/4206/
All of the games on here do have translations on romhacking.net as well.
Great list! Here's a couple more must plays. Cocoron and wai wai world 2. They are both among my famicom favs and don't need translation per se
We had Samurai pizza cats cartoon in UK when I was a kid. It was pretty awesome.
Dude it’s like another Xmas present
I remember playing that baby game somewhere a long time ago not sure how now I want to go back and try it again with friends lol awesome
Going to have to check out adventure island 4. Somehow missed it.
And of course Gimmick always so great.
Aw man, perfect timing with this video! My wife just got me a Famicom Mini console, and I'm looking for some unseen gems to load onto it. Keep up the good work, and Happy Holidays, my dude
Buy me Bonestorm or go to hell!
Exactly the same happened to me =) ~ Merry Christmas everyone!
Great reference, THRILLHO

The only plus side to being up this early on Thursdays
Cool thing about Samurai Pizza Cats is there's an actual translation patch for it, but the translators went the extra mile- not only did they release a direct translation, they released a patch that modified the game to make it more like the English dub of the anime!
That's some serious dedication, especially considering how hilarious that dub is.
Samurai Pizza Cats was broadcasted by Fox Kids in Brazil and it's got a bit of a cult following in the late 90s. It was a funny goofy show to watch and I couldn't have imagined there was a NES game of it. Great selection. Happy holidays!
Btw, your voice sounded different, like it was kinda deeper. I hope you're doing well
Is "Gimmick" related in any way to the Dreamcast game "Elemental Gimmick Gear"?
I think your Japanese is getting better. You seem to struggle less with the long Japanese names than you used to.
Thanks for being literally the only person to ever compliment my Japanese lol
On the baby one, it's the english word miracle btw. Also, your japanese isnt the worst I've ever heard as a non Japanese speaker of Japanese descent...
I think it bears mentioning that even though they may not need English patches, many of those listed here do have them. Also noteworthy is that you have to avoid hitting your head on the ceiling in The Quest of Ki (which is カイの冒険 in Japanese or Kai no Bōken -- note "Kai" for pronunciation).
Mitsume ga tooru is my fav game. I still play it.
Awesome. My new quest in life is to get my brother a cartridge of Holy Diver.
We can thank Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles for all the crazy cartoons names that came after it. I often imagine a bunch of suits sitting around in an office and wondering how they can compete with TMNT. It must have seemed insane to them, but they saw the kids loved it, and so they come up with Biker Mice from Mars.
6:00 I don't think the baby is digging. I think it's eating.
As a big NES fan, I became interested in games I refer to as the "alternate library". Games that are outside of the official North American releases. They include unlicensed games, prototypes, homebrews, and non-US games (Pal and Famicom) I wrote down a list of over 50 famicom games I want to play. One game I recently discovered is Super Star Force. It's a top down shooter with run and gun stages. It alternates between the 2. In the US we got Star Force, but I didn't know there was a sequel on Famicom.
"Holy diver!
You're the star of the masquerade.
No need to look so afraid.
Jump, jump!
Jump on the tiger!
You can feel his heart but you know he's mean.
Some light can never be seen, yeah!"
Had to. I need to get that game because it's so frickin' Metal!
We were supposed to get that Kunio-Kun Hockey game in America, It was advertised in Crash and the Boys : Street Challenge
Samurai Pizza Cats game?! :O
Holy Diver looks awesome
Thank you snesdrunk
The last game I still consider to be the best hockey game ever!
I was in korea for a month in 1992 and my cousin had the river city hockey game. I just got a nes last month and am getting a nes to famicon converter so I can get that game. I know they brought over some other river city sports games to the US, but the hockey one was my favorite.
Excellent list! Always looking for more nes games to play without downloading a language hack! Hope theres more nes and other consoles (tg16, master system, genesis, gb, etc) in the future!
I am super glad someone properly spoke the _FAMILY COMPUTER_ by its correct name. Unlike other western youtubers that are too scared to say it by it correctly.
The Kunio-kun hockey game was going to be released in the US as Crash N The Boys Ice Challenge (seen advertised at the end of Crash N The Boys Street Challenge beating the game with Crash's team)
I'm a simple man. I see new SNES Drunk I click.
I guess it's time to add a Famicom folder to my SNES Classic.
8:33
"You must defeat Shen Long to stand a chance"
"Blocking will get you no where"
Sunsoft making an 8-bit game with great music? Unheard of! Great vid , man.
So Blaster Master and Fester's Quest didn't have good music then?
@@tb3411 I was being sarcastic. Sunsoft is known for having the best 8-bit, chip tunes of the era. Batman, being at the front of every conversation.
On the note of Gimmick. Totally check out the Annotated Play by Frank Cifaldi. There is SO much in Gimmick that makes it stand out than any other NES game. Just the sheer amount of little detail
gimmick might've been released in europe too also your videos always help me when I need to find a retro game to play
He said that it was released in some PAL regions
Crisis Force's OST is fuckin rad. Mitsume Ga Tooru looks sick, gotta add that to my snes mini.
Three-Eyed boy? Finally we get the Tien prequel we've been waiting for!
Kyatto ninden teyandee translates as "Cat ninja teyandee" (The teyandee doesn't have an exact translation)
The original series had a different tone to the one we had in the west, that saban adapted to be some kind of Animaniacs with cats, and, at least for me, it's hard to see an entire episode on this times, it aged pretty bad
The original one it's a lot of fun, the complete series was uploaded here on youtube some time ago
I know you put the "Pizza cats" name as a pun, but i want to share the trivia for everyone :)
And if you're a fan of the American adaptation, there's an English patch that also changes all of the character names and such.
I got so used to playing PAL versions of Gimmick (running quick due to region differences), that now every time I hear the music playing at its normal speed it sounds all weird and derpy.
3:56 Something we've all casually done out of frustration in various games
In Japan, giving the "peace" sign must be really damn cool, or something. Haha
Journey to Silius is my favorite nes soundtrack. Gimmick is my second favorite.
Damn, Gotta check out Moon Crystal looks interesting
Have you done a video for Death Duel on the Genesis? I'd love to hear your thoughts on that one.
When you get to the end of Crash N The Boyz: Street Challenge, the ice hockey game, or Ice Challenge, is advertised for that upcoming winter season. Sadly, the game never came out in the USA.
Technos Japan really developed a fantastic universe with Kunio Kun. Crash N The Boyz: Street Challenge will always be one of my favorites. top 10 NES game no doubt about it.
That ain't true lover
@@cazamilfs8945 what's not true?
You mean Technos.
Darkwing Geese you're right. edited.
