2009 Toyota Tacoma with gear shift lock. i was towing the other day and turned off truck. i did restart then that's when it locked. got it back on road after i had to use the shift release switch. had no turn signals or cruise also . all lights were working otherwise. checked out some videos and one recommended trying the brake stop switch by brake peddle. no fuses looked bad. before i go try the brake stop i am looking for other feedback if anyone else experienced the same problem. thanks
I have 2000 Toyota 4Runner and cant get it out of park. Checked fuses, cant get it out manually to see if it starts in neutral to further investigate??
Also it's not the relay switch I replaced that even though it wasn't bad and it's not the brake light switch. So that only leaves the neutral switch or bad wiring in between somewhere.
@@tishhuston4352 Sometimes the shifter grip can malfunction. Often you can talk to the service advisors at the local Toyota Dealer and see what problems they see coming in on that vehicle. While they usually won't say exactly what's wrong til they touch your vehicle you can usually get a surprising amount of info about the about possibilities. Also sometime it takes a longer key than usual to trigger that emergency shifter release to make it shift. On my Toyota a good size key does it, on my Acura it really takes something longer. You would want to ask the dealer if that's safe to release the shifter for driving when it's not a fuse.
If somehow your key malfunctioned or the tumbler malfunctioned with the key in it, it's possible it would not allow you to remove the key. Also you usually cannot remove the key unless the vehicle is in park. This might be a good question for the dealership service dept and see what they say.
Perfect video, this was exactly my issue.

Did you check to see if the brake lights are working ?
@@KeithBlade yes. So now im assuming maybe neutral safety switch? But its $200 so i was checking other things first.
@tishhuston4352 there is a switch under there but hard to say whether its bad without testing it because it could be other things.

You're welcome!
What model is this one
This one is a '98 4runner SR5 2wd
I tried everything and my problem was that I had a disconnected battery ground strap. That fixed everything and now I can shift out of park!
Fantastic, I'm glad you found the solution!
Great video! Fixed my problem, thanks!

My 2003 Toyota 4Runner V8 i having heard time changing the gare from P to D what causes that.
Probably shifter cable needs adjusting
Hi I have a similar problem with my car the gear shift can't shift into park and also the ignition key can't turn off only remaining at AC

Corolla 2012 gear shift is stuck in the parking to reverse only
Can i use this way
I'm not sure, that might be a different problem or a mechanical issue. With this video the shifter won't come out of park due to electrical reasons
@@KeithBlade Thank you
The problem was related to the piece tied to the transmission cable, I sprayed it with rust remover and the problem was solved.
Thank you
