- The International Center for Agricultural Research in the Dry Areas (ICARDA), part of the CGIAR network, is a non-profit international organization undertaking research-for-development to provide innovative, science-based solutions that improve livelihoods in rural communities across the non-tropical dry areas under a climate crisis. Our work advances scientific knowledge, shapes practices, and informs policy. For over four decades we have supported communities, donors, partners, and governments to:
- Develop drought, pest and disease resistant crops, goats, and sheep;
- Collect, conserve, and multiply important agrobiodiversity;
- Research, test, and apply innovative land, soil and water management technologies;
- Increase farmer incomes by through better agricultural systems and market access;
- Build the capacity of partners and institutions to follow their own research agendas;
- Improve access to agricultural enterprise for women and youth.
Our non-profit solutions based on field-proven science have been widely adopted by countries, NGOs, the private sector, and development agencies, improving the livelihoods of millions of farmers across Asia, Africa, and the Middle East.
Our unique dry-land experience in crops, sheep and goat breeds, and water, land and soil management, combined with our extensive networks of research and development partners, including farming communities themselves, means we provide people-centered solutions tailored to real-world agroecological settings.
ICARDA innovations are directly integrated into farming activities and food systems, and are designed for scale-up and adaptation within fast-changing environmental conditions, facilitating the best possible conditions for impact.
