I remember back in 1972 my dad (a fairly conservative white guy who had been a ww11 prisoner of war) thought Shirley Chisholm should be president. I was in my early 20's and had no idea of who she really was but my dad did.
I remember how delighted I was in that election cycle when they lowered the voting age to 18 down from 21 years of age. They did it just in time for me and my politically conscious friends to vote. I was 20 years old then and remember how disgruntled many of us were because of the fact that we could be drafted and sent to die in the Vietnam war at the age of 18 but we were not allowed to vote. I went to a school in the urban area where they were even pulling some 18 year old boys out of the classroom and sending them to Vietnam and not allowing them to finish high school. I never saw them again, but when I went to Washington D.C. later on I saw their names on the Vietnam memorial.
