    It’s basically ironsworn with vertical scaling. The game play is the exact same as ironsworn’s story game style but you can scale, weapon damage, armour, health, stress , rolling to hit and durability.
    Ironsworn only lets to grab more and more assets and horizontally grow scenarios you get advantages in

    because 2d12 statistically looks like a pyramid, small bonuses will have a pretty outsized influence on the average result compared to rolling a d20. Being able to combine a ability score bonus with an experience/skill bonus can get you up to +4 or +6 at level 1, and getting advantage can push up your average quite a lot. But you're definitely not just stacking up ones and twos like pf2.

    Why do the story games have more complex combat systems than games that were designed around combat? 🤔

    • @ebertwix5860

      It's the difference between having played combat systems for long enough to want them simpler and then have the experience to do it.

    Cards are feats essentially. I agree that there are a few more fiddly bits that don't really seem to add anything to the game. You needs cards, tokens, different dice and so on and so many small things to keep track of on the character sheet.
    The thing I do not agree is that safety tools are useless. I have seen them be useful in my online games and the evidence I have shows me they are useful.

    I remember my first impressions were it seemed like a schizophrenic mess of mechanics pulled from many of the most popular systems (savage worlds came to mind), but it seems to function at least from a surface level.

    Thank you for your presentation of the game. I wanted to read through the rules but I'll save that for now. Because you're so quick with a video. Oh Jim, it's just a horror how we players are milked. This shows me that everything is moving towards usable merch again. Freeleague makes it so bad too. I assume that they want to sell Daggerheart as a box so that it exudes that old school charm. For me it's not an Instabuy yet. I don't see a DnD killer either. What could happen, however, is tension between DnD players and critters.

    The hope/fear mechanic sound tedious with this current implementation - for every action/ attack.
    And as a GM you have to find a meaningful positive/negative outcome or what's the point.
    Applause for trying this game.

    • @this_epic_name
      @this_epic_name 6 місяців тому

      That was the original intent, it seems, and it's still what they say in videos, but it seems like both aspects have been "tokenized." When you roll with hope, you get 1 hope, which can be spent now or later. When you roll with fear (in or out of combat), the DM gets a token, which can be used whenever...adding enemies to combats, taking moves "out of turn", etc. So it seems to me that they've gone a ways in reducing the hope/fear toll on the DM. As far as I see it, it means the DM doesn't have to come up with these consequences on the spot, when the roll is made (though they still can).

    Have you seen Crown & Skull?
    It's a pretty new game, borrowos from ItO/ Cairn but takes it further. Does some interesting things IMO (no hit points or stats, only skills and equipment that get damaged when hit and so you can't use it). Character creation is very modular. There's a free quickstart online, you may like it

  • @troffle
    @troffle 6 місяців тому +1

    Ignoring the ancient idea of "roll dice, there's your stat, have a day"... does that "distribute +1 and +2 to your stats" really have any benefit over "You have sixty points, distribute them across six stats"? Or ye olde point-buying?

    Thanks for the video, Grim. The game looks to have some decent aspects to it (the 2d12 looks intresting in paper), but I'm not really interested in playing it (I have secluded myself into only playing like 3-5 systems in the later years).
    Curious, I think I have never heard you talking about some of following indie darlings:
    -Mausritter

    -Maze Rats & Knave

      @@PostmortemVideoOh, Mausritter is really nice, maybe even mice. It’s inspired by Knave, Cairn and Into the Odd, but you play small animals and cats and owls are your worst nightmare.
      Adopting that perspective on the world seems like loads of fun, not only for young players.
      I bought the German version for the kids, but the publisher butchered it by gendering almost every noun in the book. It’s horrible. I switched back to English after seeing the equivalent of a “roaming frog knight/ess” where in German even the attribute needed to be gendered twice. Crazy nonsense.

    I have seen people say "why cant people just let people enjoy something" in response to peoples criticism. Ah yes a game that is in beta asking for feedback is now a bad thing. Also I knew this was going to be the same clownary as the last one blah. In my game worlds that I enjoy and will make for any games is well semi realistic in terms of how things would be. The world is not a nice place, flith in the streets of towns and cities, sickness, depravity of all sorts. People will suffer and horrible things will happen. (look at any decent RPG video game same stuff you see in them) Also its hard to make a Critical Role experience when it is all semi scripted.

  • @BobMcDowell
    @BobMcDowell 6 місяців тому +1

    The token-based GM action economy seems very broken to me. It'll work for what Critical Role typically does, but it stops making any sense if the players are outnumbered. All those enemies, even the ranged ones, just stand there waiting for a chance to act? And if the party never messes up, what then? The baddies get half as many actions if the GM does what they're not supposed to do and converts actions into fear?

    • @this_epic_name
      @this_epic_name 6 місяців тому

      It go like that, but the math says it generally won't. DM can get a turn any time someone rolls with fear, and there's a 50/50 chance of that happening. The DM can also build up fear pre-combat from social and exploration rolls.

  • @sectorbob

    The game system seems needlessly complex for a simple end result. I will say that player characters are defined more by what they say and do and the choices they make in game then in mechanics gained in generation. So not too upset about cookie cutter generation at the beginning.

    Without adversity where is the game? Without challenge, difficulty and friction how do you give anything for players to wrestle with? Unless wrestling with challenges isn't the goal but talking a lot about how cool the things you do are? Bit too saccharine drenched for me, that kind of thing. Feels like a different kind of animal to actual roleplaying games too. Fair enough if you like that but I don't understand why someone would pretend their product was something other than it is. The thing sounds dire and I'm sure will top the drivethru sales one way or another for a couple of weeks then be played by a niche minority once in a blue moon.
