@@DisasterBreakdown I saw the word “movie,” in your pinned comment, and I thought maybe that was her channel members (well I’m subscribed, but I meant Patreon- which one of these days I hope to join) but until I saw this comment… and looked to see how long the video is… and saw that it was like probably double the longest one I’ve ever seen of yours, even after they doubled in time! That’s if I’m thinking of the right channel (there’s one other that covers the same topics generally speaking which I enjoy almost as much as yours so I might be confused about that. But I feel like they used to be like 12 or 13 minutes and then they doubled to more like a half hour.) It’s worth the wait for us regular subscribed folk and I wish it was a happier topic, but a good thing to shed light on and more fully inform those of us who aren’t really in the field but have interest in it. They merged and McDonnell Douglas has majority. Boeing used to be run by experienced engineers most all of it in house. Now it’s been run by bean counters since the merger. That’s my understanding.
You lined up the entire 737 MAX saga in perfect detail and simplified it for everyone to understand and digest- i’ve seen your videos a couple of times before, but you earned my full support of this channel from me! 😊
The weird thing is I've flown on the MAX on Alaska and Southwest, but also understand the severity of the issue not just with the planes but Boeing as a whole now. The entire company needs a shakeup from the top to middle. I can't blame the workers, they're caught in a position they didn't want to be in.
I have it on, shall we say, extremely good authority that many MANY Boeing maintenance workers were either laid off or quit in the past few years, some due to COVID and some probably just general cost cutting. I'm sure this is just a microcosm of that shitshow. The workers being trained now are up against institutional hurdles that I empathize with. :/
@@nyanbinary1717 you're not wrong. Before I stopped driving trucks I delivered to some of the Boeing facilities and it went from you know everyone you dealt with to a revolving door each week of people "not working out" and leaving. I got the vibe the ones who cared were ran out and the ones who just wanted a check remained. Hope they could turn it around but don't see it under the regime they have or the profits over people mentality that's rampant
If Boeing really lost or got rid of the employees who were trying to sound the alarm, that would be the biggest mistake I've ever heard a company making. I remember seeing a Boeing whistle blower talking about debris being left inside aircraft like aluminum drilling chips, tools, rivets, screws, nuts, washers, etc which bundles of wires would be in contact with buried deep within the planes. Things that normally aren't on a maintenance check list after a plane is delivered. I think we're not done with Boeing problems. I believe things left inside aircraft will start to cause problems with Boeing aircraft in the next 10 years as these wiring harnesses start to wear through at the points where they touch foreign objects deep within the aircraft. They're going to lose a few jets because of debris. And they lost a free great employees who complained about this issue. Oh Boeing, chasing profit destroyed you, very much destroyed you. What a shame. The thousands of employees who always did the right thing before must be so upset with the employees who did this. The managers or high up or whatever, probably not the low man on the totem pole.

It's just heartbreaking. Boeing used to he a shining example of American ingenuity and innovation. A sad sad situation of relentless pursuit of profit from a now underdog in competition, combined with lax or outright corrupt government oversight resulted in the loss of hundreds of lives AND a sterling reputation.
The whistleblower, before he "committed suicide", revealed that Boeing no longer have people with engineering degrees running the company. It's now a bunch of execs who have no clue how a modern airplane even works.
This story always freaked me out. Being a software engineer, this reminds me of all the times I did something stupid that caused some error that was easy to predict and prevent. Except in this case, people died. Don't worry, I'm never going to design flight control software.

As a former aerospace engineer at BAE Systems, I would describe the idea of having the MCAS system activate on the basis of one AoA sensor as bloody ridiculous.

I find the frankenstein job of placing excessively large engines more towards the front of the wings of older planes and bandaiding this now unstable plane with software as egregiously stupid - I have no engineering background and you do not need one to see how that can be immensely problematic.
The balance you strike between explaining thorough technical details and relatable, informative reporting is stunning. I'm Brazilian and I would like to suggest for a future video, a tragic episode that occurred in 1960, when there was a collision between a DC3 from Real Linhas Aéreas, a Brazilian airline, and a DC6 from the American Navy over Rio de Janeiro. This fact occurred during President Eisenhower's visit to Brazil and generated a lot of divergence between the Brazilian and American reports. I believe it is a completely forgotten accident in the United States and it would be a very interesting video for the American public. Congratulations to the channel, the best of its kind.
Wow I've never heard of that accident sounds like it would make a very interesting video. I assume info on it will be hard to find as a military plane was involved and I imagine they don't want many people knowing about their mistakes.Still would be very interesting to learn about.
@@laurenm-w3634This incident occurred on February 25, 1960 and there was never a definitive report about it. Therefore, it must be really difficult to find details about him, perhaps due to the divergence between the Brazilian and American investigations. Despite being an American Navy plane, it was not on a proper military mission, as it was transporting Navy musicians for a performance that would be made for the presidents of Brazil and the United States. There is a video about it, but in Portuguese, I don't know if it has subtitles in English, I don't think so. But it would be interesting to have a video about this event on an American channel, without a doubt.
I think you can go on the video and submit subtitles in different languages. If you speak Portuguese I would really appreciate subtitles so I could watch that video as it sounds interesting
@@pandamandimax The video is not mine, it's from a Brazilian channel called "Aviões e Músicas", in English 'planes and music'. Damn Chloe that was a long one. Also, back in 2018 us Indonesians thought 'Oh shit. Not again, not another major embarrassment in Indonesian aviation'. But after ET302 and the unveiling of Boeing's callousness and cataclysmic deliberate ignorance of the safety issues, me and my friends as aerospace engineering were like 'Holy fuck for once Lion Air was not fully in the blame, Boeing what the fuck why are you now becoming McDonnell Douglas?!!'

Your channel just has so much more character, it has reoccurring jokes, it has humor in general and it also has personal opinions, which are always appreciated! And all this while maintaining the most accuracy possible too! Loved the vid btw ❤
I had family who was one of the engineers on the original 737 and even when he passed away in the early 90’s he was surprised they were still using the same similar plane design. I was told that he loved working for Boeing at the time b/c they put safety first (most of the time idk the inner workings lol). It is truly awful that the McDonnell Douglas merger truly had the worst people become the heads of Boeing and took away the voices of the Engineers and people who were building the planes. This is the DC-10 all over again.
Hell, it might be worse than the DC-10 if it isn't already (the MCAS killed more people than the infamous cargo doors) if it continues to head this way and more shady deals surface. Honestly, this might all be heading towards the level of the Lockheed Starfighter/bribery scandal.
I may just be weird but i find your voice so calming, always put your longer vids on to sleep but they are also really interesting for a novice aviation geek like me

The furthest thing from our minds when we make travel arrangements is whether our pilot is properly trained. Or that the airliner we're flying on isn't safe? Safety was once a priority! That priority no longer exists as we are all just collateral damage! Excellent video as always, Chloe!
United wants to hire 5000 new pilots by 2030 and 50% of them will not be the most qualified for the job but will be women and people of color. I’m all for diversity but I think the public will draw the line on affirmative action when their pilots who have their lives in their hands were not hired because they were the most qualified but they were hired because their gender and skin color.
Boeing is really making me reconsider anything with "Made in United States" on it. Also yeah, the pilots feel it is safe, but the pilots didn't know they had 4 bolts missing for 100+ flights. I'm more concerned with what the people building the planes say about the build quality, as they're the actual ones that see it.
On many products, the only thing "made in the USA" is the tag that says so. You have to buy from companies that trace and are completely transparent with their supply chains.
I don’t think your going to like what the people building the plane have to say about their quality 😂 tho I’m guessing you won’t hear many bad things said about Boeing from employees as those who speak out tend to change their mind about maintaining a pulse.😅
@@WouldntULikeToKnow. Yes I know. I do my best to prioritize my spending to local (European) manufacturers either way, although, with some things, that's not really possible.
I live in the town building the 787, which had its manufacturing hiccups as it struggled to push technology in so many ways, but it's now a pretty solid aircraft. Even with the 787 being a notably good aircraft I still hear stories from the many locals building it that suggest eventual issues are inevitable. I personally really wish Boeing the greatest successes, as the health of that company is a serious consideration in the health of my city. However, I'm not particularly optimistic about Boeing's future.

I love the new format Chloe, watched whole thing being invested. I can definitely see a step up with the editing, humor and pacing. I also liked you had more screen time! Awesome episode. Until this point I liked Green Dot and Mentour a bit better but with every new video of yours, especially newer ones I tend to lean towards your channel more. Really great job Chloe! ❤
PS as far as green dot mayday, etc. I have caught some episodes so to speak. If it looks interesting. But every time I see a new video from you or an old one for that matter, I watch!
When I watch Mentour or any of the channels that show repackaged Mayday episodes I feel like I'm in a car dealership surrounded by commissioned sales people trying to push add-ons on me (in some industries that's called tip-begging), and then it takes forever before YT gives me recommended videos from other channels again. I gave up on Mentour maybe a year ago. I just got tired of the constant sales pitch and clickbait thumbnails. That tells me the channel is more about making money than providing content. It's not hard to tell when someone is playing to the almighty YT algorithm more than their audience.
Yeah these videos from Chloe are getting better better each new episode, I also watch mentor and green dot , but recently found Speed tape films , ( cockpit casual ) highly recommend taking a look if you haven’t seen .
Oh okay, another take on the 737 controversy, I thought. But oh my God this is so much more. The fact that you had to memorize this really shows how much work you did on this video. I absolutely LOVED this. Your thorough explanation about the different versions of the planes, the info about Boeing's history, and the details about why / how the plug blew out were genuinely excellent. I loved the conclusion in particular-- in some of your other videos you'd mentioned that a lot of pilots have enjoyed flying the 747s, which perplexed me compared to the crazy stuff going on in the news these days. So clarifying between the public's perception vs what pilots think (with all their skill and experience) was a great point I hadn't considered too much in the past. I mean, they're the ones flying the thing, which means they need to be comfortable with it to keep the passengers safe. Anyway, S tier video!
Ok, there's nothing wrong with the MAX per se, but it's built by Boeing, a company that can't be trusted to bolt in a door plug because of their systemic incompetence. If the MAX is built properly, great! But it's a Boeing, so we can't take that as a given. They've demonstrated that quite clearly to us.
Outstanding job, Chloe. You have really honed in your craft over the years. I am a flight attendant for United Airlines and I tell my crews about your channel and they look at me funny..."You watch a channel about airline disasters...do you realize given our profession how odd that is?" LOL. Odd or not, I look forward to every video. Drew
I mean, pilots are generally required to know what caused prior accidents for the planes they’re certified on. Plus, it is the history of your industry. Macabre maybe, but I wouldn’t say it’s odd. At the same time, I can understand why someone would go the other way and not want to know anything about accidents.
@@piedpiper1172 I am more intrigued by the accident investigation than the event. Incredible how they can find the cause of an accident when most would see it as impossible. We call it tombstone technology unfortunately.
The comparison with the DC-10 is very apt. Both planes produced under McDonnell-Douglas execs cutting corners for money with a nasty reputation that turned out to not be that big a deal once the main issues got fixed, but still had everyone hyperfixated on it. Though, the Max hasn't had an engine fall off, or an engine blow up and destroy the flight controls, or almost crash in mid-air with a jumbo, or excrete a minor panel that didn't actually do anything to the plane but happened to blow up the next plane on takeoff sequence that day, which just so happened to be *Concorde*... Man, the DC-10 was cursed.
I think the reason the stigma for both planes remains is due to the investigation exposing the inner working of decision making at the highest levels. You start to wonder what other half-baked systems are in the plane that waiting to go sideways under the right conditions.
Your use of the black and white video of you saying something 35 minutes ago just floored me. I am still chuckling even thinking about it. Bravo !! Making something serious have levity breaks is pretty cool and brilliant

Probably the best explanation of the MCAS system I've ever heard and now I genuinely understand what Boeing was trying to do and what regulations it was trying to get around. Personally the MCAS seems entirely unnecessary and authorities should have just certified the max without it. Despite that I'm appalled by Boeings negligence in failing to ensure the MCAS is a redundant system or even giving a notice to pilots saying that this situation might happen and air lines should train the crew to respond with a short simulator session
you did forget one interesting thing - the cockpit door blew open during the depressurisation, and it wasn’t in the plane’s manual at all. on other plane models, the whole door doesn’t blow open, instead having slats that fail more safely. the pilots had trouble communicating and had a checklist sucked out of the cabin if i recall correctly on the alaska flight
Chloe, this is probably your best breakdown (that I have seen so far). It is absolutely spot-on, very well made and researched, as well as being consistently engaging.
I have to say, this is the most comprehensive analysis of the whole MAX issue I have seen anywhere. The work you put into this video (and all your videos in general) is amazing! After only a few views of your videos, you've become one of my top favorite channels. Thank you so much!!
Chloe! Fanfriggentastic video. That little touch of sarcasm (like when talking about which AOA sensor was faulty, GEEEE I WONDER WHICH ONE) is absolute gold, please keep that up in future videos. This video is going to go far, wait and see.
It’s really unfortunate about the max, because I love flying on them. They are significantly quieter than the “ng” range they replace. Also love the feature length video, and the in person “breakdown backstory session.” Great editing btw
Thanks, Chloe! Fabulous video. I learnt so much. I love how you argue for including nuance in analyses and discussions 💜 (And I don't usually comment on anyone's appearance, but you look great!)

My father was a machinist for Boeing for 34 years. He helped make many, many of the early Boeing jets. He was proud to work there and made a good product. Boeing merged with McDonnell-Douglas after he retired and he saw the writing on the wall. He predicted big problems for the "Lazy B," as he called the company.
What are some of the problems that your father predicted? I'm thinking maybe the company now hires based on certain quotas, instead of actual qualifications.
I was surprised to “see” the host after randomly being played this video when trying to sleep, but after 40 mins’ish in I had to piss and watched while I sat down I got surprised! * daaamn, i imagined a guy * (due to the relatively deep voice)
This is high quality content and by far the best documentary about the 73M accidents! I really enjoyed watching. Thank you Chloe for all the work you put in this 🙂👍
This is the first one of your videos I’ve actually watched, rather than listened to. I love how expressive you are. Do you always ‘present’ the video like this? I think it’s the first time I’ve actually seen you! 😂
Very much appreciate that you put so much effort and time in the context over the development history of the MAX. Being in the industry for some time, I found that the QA issues manifested from the Alaska incident was far more disconcerting than the MCAS saga. To go by the accident triangle, it is almost bewildering to see the scale of issues that plague Boeing, evidently for so many years. Heavens know how long when, or if, the rot could be eradicated.
Never have I expected that a breadtube essay-style video about the MAX will ever exist, so it is indeed a pleasant surprise to see you making one. This feature-length of a documentary has thoroughly informed me on a topic that me, as an aviation enthusiast, has already known for years at this point, in a way that is even more entertaining than the rest of the technical explanations people like Mentour Pilot and blancolirio have presented to us. Thanks for the monumental work, Chloe!

I do not understand how ANY software that can OVERRIDE THE PILOT is considered not worth even putting in the manual, much less advising the pilots. To me, that is absolutely mind boggling. Also: I'm glad to see you on camera more often! Its nice to put a face to the voice. 😃
It didn't override the pilots lionair crew had the plane undercontrol for most of the flight . Ethiopian crew were mcas trained and still lost the aircraft.
@@michael-y8c At the time of the crash, MCAS was trimming the plane and pushing the nose down, regardless of pilot input. How is that not overriding the pilots? Regardless of the specifics in the crash, I was also referring to the fact that Boeing decided that MCAS did not need to be mentioned to the pilots and did not need to be in the manual. If it removes control from the pilot, changes how the plane is flying, and especially without any kind of notification that it is activating (because it doesn't seem like it had any kind of obvious visual or aural warning), then pilots NEED to be warned about it, and they were not.
@sijplays918 Lionair flew that same plane for 3 weeks even after an incorrect repair, they put the aircraft back into revenue serivce knowing it had aoa problems . What good would it have been if mcas was in the manufacturer manual when they couldn't even follow standard operating procedures The problem with most of these videos is that they fail to mention the aircraft was lost due to control flight into terrain not from mcas. Mcas was corrected 28 times by the captain, trimming the plane with the trim tab. What mcas took out the captain put back in . For 11 minutes and 40 seconds, they had the plane under control. No take over no mayham no confusion although going very fast due to leaving engines to take off power another fault by the crew. If the problem was so bad, why the hell would you fly to a holding patten? Get that thing back on the ground. Lionair don't pay their pilots for not completing the flight. I guess the facts don't make a sexy story. Ethiopian crew were trained for mcas and still lost the aircraft. Also leaving engines to full power and failed standard operation procedures.
@@michael-y8c The trim being reset is still taking over from the pilot. It is still *taking over a function of the aircraft that the pilot expects to be within his control*. This would be like if your car suddenly starts veering to the left. Yeah sure, you can correct every time it does it, but it's still hardly an ideal way to drive the car, and if it was because of a system within said car, you'd probably be pretty pissed off if no one warned you about it. And the captain was not able to totally correct what the trim was doing - it eventually became too much to overcome because the trim angle had been set so far that even with the captain pulling up fully, it just could not cancel out the trim angle that MCAS had set it to. Also, adding it back to the manual would have given the pilots information that could have saved their lives. Another incident with MCAS was averted when the pilots turned off the automatic trim, which they new to do *because it had been in the manual,* but was removed. And CFIT is an *end result,* not a diagnosis. It is CFIT *due* to things like interference from MCAS and constantly having to correct it and try and figure out what is happening with your aircraft causing lack of situational awareness. Saying it was just due to CFIT is a bit like saying, "They died because their car ran into that wall." Technically true, but what CAUSED them to run into that wall? Were the roads slippery? Did their brakes fail? Did their power steering lock up and only allow them to go one direction?
@sijplays918 Ethiopian crew knew about mcas did it save them ??? Cowboys that's all they were. Captain of lionair had enough control to bring the aircraft back to the airport not to a bloody holding patten. They forgot memory items stand operation procedures, putting mcas in the manual would have made no difference at all. Aircraft was lost when control was given to the first officer to till then captain had it undercontrol only problem is they left engine's to take off so did Ethiopian crew. Bloody cowboys they should have never been anyway near a cockpit. You are talking about an airline that has a history of crashing airplane an airline who not once but twice tries to and on a runway that was underconstruction clowns.
Chloe, your videos are so thoroughly researched and entertaining to watch. I watch a lot of videos in this genre (because of my own personal experience with a 737 when I was a teenager!) and yours are the best.
Chloe! Really astounding job on this one, its a pleasure to have watched you grow your channel and your content overtime. You put a lot of heart and pride in your work, thank you for the education and the laughs. I used to work on com/nav systems on the KC-10 when i was in the usaf, so i have residual interest in aircrafts, and your videos about why these things happen are thorough and captivating. Keep on shining, youre awesome!
I was already in my (admittedly morbid) hyperfixation on plane crashes when the first crash happened. Arguably, it fueled the interest further. Every time I see talks about this return, my autistic brain just goes off and fixates on the matter once more. Having been a subscriber for about a year now, it's been really pleasant coming back each time you upload, this video specifically has been quite the treat for me. Thank you
I've been watching your channel for years, but I finally decided to subscribe to your Patreon after this video. This is completely next-level, and I only wish I could afford to pay more per month. Thank you for always doing such amazing in-depth coverage on these aviation accidents, Chloe!
This is one beast of a documentation. Full of good investigated information, good sense of humor although a sad topic. The topic is overviewed at a really deep level, not suitable for everyone, but for aviation nerds a must see. Many thanks Chloe! You really made my day!
Another awesome documentary. To be honest I love this series - sometimes I watch your videos on breakfast, some on lunch, or with my girlfriend when we are just resting after tiring day. Your voice is great and your passion given into this series is on really high level. I admire you. Keep in mind - I am from Poland, so your passion and your effort is going worldwide. Great work! :D What you are doing is great and remember you don't have to change it.
YES! I have been waiting for this! I am so glad you are covering the MAX. I can't watch at the moment but I will be back when. I can give it my full attention. I am sure it will be your best yet! 👍🏻👍🏻🙂✌🏻
Congratulations on this documentary 🥳🥳🥳 Finally someone who packs the individual differences and problems into one show. I love Boeing, especially the 747 and 787. But what's happening at Boeing at the moment makes me a little sad and I sincerely hope that they will take the right path at some point. And Chloe, please keep it up, your joke always brings a bit of cheer to these sad events😊👍👍👍
I confess, I am an air disaster binge watcher. Randomly found this channel and thought " what an unlikely presenter" . Your explanations were concise, accurate ( I have watched a lot of vids on Boeing ) easy to follow and entertaining. Well done ! loved the wardrobe changes.

The ghost of the 90s has now been haunting seattle for 30 years.
When the entire management at Boeing got swapped with mcdonnell douglas it started...
My first trip was on a maersk 737-300
Wait? Boeing got rid of its management and replaced them with McDonald Douglas? How does that work?
MD had horrible safety culture, when they were absorbed into Boeing, that carried over as MDs management was kept
@@alf513
They merged and McDonnell Douglas has majority. Boeing used to be run by experienced engineers most all of it in house. Now it’s been run by bean counters since the merger. That’s my understanding.

@dominicbrunsmeier I was referring to Ground School and not all of the Instructors are Pilots either.

They don't pay much either
@@JK360noscope they do, but only for the C-suit.
I think they represent the state of the US work and business culture to perfection (as seen from an European pov)
And to think that we thought they went downhill when they bought McDonnell Douglas. They were doing this even before.
This documentary puts Netflix's one to utter shame. Amazing content!
This story always freaked me out. Being a software engineer, this reminds me of all the times I did something stupid that caused some error that was easy to predict and prevent. Except in this case, people died. Don't worry, I'm never going to design flight control software.

I feel like you have curated your videos perfectly for your audience - passionate aviation fans but not necessarily experts/professionals, though I'm sure they would be/are impressed with your content! Greetings from Australia - easily the best aircrash investigation channel on UA-cam - both narration and content - and no sneaky advertising hiding in the middle of content unlike other channels....keep up the good work.

Also, back in 2018 us Indonesians thought 'Oh shit. Not again, not another major embarrassment in Indonesian aviation'.
I may just be weird but i find your voice so calming, always put your longer vids on to sleep but they are also really interesting for a novice aviation geek like me
I do the same

You sound so much more confident! I'm a sort of casual subscriber so this is my first time seeing you. Looks like you're doing great, and it shows :) also always love stuff about the hot mess that is the 737 max so looking forward to the rest of the video!
(p.s. from a brother to a sister, I wish you luck and happiness as you grow more into yourself 💗)

@@AronBezzina Oh, I've seen what they have to say, and that is exactly why I'm saying what I'm saying.
This is a high-quality product. Thank you for putting this together!
I’m so glad I found your channel towards the end of 2023. I’m that person who has flown a fair bit and yet binge watches air disaster content - usually at 2am.

@@DisasterBreakdown I watch mentour too but you’re number one and he’s an excellent number two in my list. You’re both right up there.
I do prefer your older style of video but I enjoyed this one nonetheless
No one does these kinds of videos better!
What is a Teleprompter, Alec?
That's so funny.
I watch air disaster videos while flying commercial.
I don't care.
Fight me 😂
The comparison with the DC-10 is very apt.
Yeah and those same idiots are the ones running Boeing now. Go figure
I think the reason the stigma for both planes remains is due to the investigation exposing the inner working of decision making at the highest levels. You start to wonder what other half-baked systems are in the plane that waiting to go sideways under the right conditions.
Interesting fact... Turkish Airlines DC-10 flight 981 killed 346 people. The two 737 Max 8 crashes killed a total of 346 people.
Glad you mentioned the DC-10 role in the awful Concorde crash. The DC-10 was so janky it even caused other airplanes to crash!
Your use of the black and white video of you saying something 35 minutes ago just floored me. I am still chuckling even thinking about it. Bravo !! Making something serious have levity breaks is pretty cool and brilliant
Honestly, I LOVED the extra-long video so no need to apologize for it. I can’t wait to see what you have coming up next.

Love the longer videos, especially when they include so much background info & research.
Also, PLEASE do the Flight 981, DC 10 story.
I am also extremely invested in a DC 10 video 👀
you did forget one interesting thing - the cockpit door blew open during the depressurisation, and it wasn’t in the plane’s manual at all. on other plane models, the whole door doesn’t blow open, instead having slats that fail more safely. the pilots had trouble communicating and had a checklist sucked out of the cabin if i recall correctly on the alaska flight
Chloe, this is probably your best breakdown (that I have seen so far). It is absolutely spot-on, very well made and researched, as well as being consistently engaging.

My father was a machinist for Boeing for 34 years. He helped make many, many of the early Boeing jets. He was proud to work there and made a good product. I love how expressive you are. Do you always ‘present’ the video like this? I think it’s the first time I’ve actually seen you! 😂
Hahaha, this is my first time too. Imagined how shock I am.
Ooh, a feature length video! Looking forward to this one
