  • Here is an updated comparison video of Samurai Shodown III, between the ports released for the Sega Saturn and PlayStation. I included extra features to better show the differences between the two ports, like the load times and the quality of animation. Enjoy!

I didn't know this for the longest time, but the US version of the Playstation game is actually faster than the Japanese version. I remember reviewers reviewing the game and using the Japanese version which is really slowed down. This wasnt the case when I got my hands on the US version. Thinking it was the same I was surprised that reviewers of the time never mentioned this update. I remember playing the JP version for the longest time and then the Neo CD one, it was like the game was turbo!

Wow, I was not aware of that. I have to check out the Japanese PS1 port. Do you find the Japanese port easier than the US port? That was a big complaint I have about the US version.

Back in the day when it came out I played the Japanese Playstation version
It's a headache inducing version. Avoid at all cost. Didn't know about the US version being better, thanks.
I'll stick to the Saturn version

I've only ever played III since I got it for the Neo Geo, which I like it quite a lot. I've known of the Saturn and PlayStation ports of it for a good while, just never played either of those ports for various reasons. All I can say is I'm not surprised, seems like the typical result many of these have when ported to them, but I think I would go with the Saturn version if not just because I like playing fighting games on it with its controller. I don't know but to me that works, good one man.

    • @NeoTurboManiac78

Another awesome comparison video. That PS1 port looked bad. Animations were missing, frames per second looked bad and it has some sound issues. PS1 was a 3D power house but could never run 2D games like the Saturn could.

    • @NeoTurboManiac78

Great comparison! As has been mentioned, somehow, the Japanese PS1 version is a completely different build to the PAL and US version. It even has different looking loading screens and options menu too. Might be worth a look depending on your curiosity levels, eh?
Forgot to mention... The JPN version, IIRC, keeps more animation frames but suffers terribly as a result. Terribly....

Yeah, it's definitely not mandatory (lol!) but interesting for comparisons sake. I only had the PAL PS1 version growing up, then got the Saturn import later and eventually the AES version. For whatever reason, I'm one of those individuals who enjoys and appreciates all manner of ports and versions of the same game! I think it's an unrecognised illness!!

I think a more fair comparison would be the Saturn vs. PS2 port (via Samurai Shodown Anthology/Rokuban Shoubu). The PS1 cannot compare against the Saturn, let alone with the 1MB extended RAM cart. Later in PS1's life, I understand developers were able to get around the systems sprite limitations (using two dimension polygons) and we got to see some silky smooth animation in those fighting games (e.g. Gundam Battle Assault 2, Shaman King, Samurai Deeper Kyo, etc.). I believe the PS2 may not be a port but rather, emulated? It suffers from bad bilinear filtering (480i) but may be remedied with modern day scalers (i.e. Retro Tink 5x Pro). I've yet to try to real deal (i.e. MVS/AES) but hope to someday see how Saturn fares. I'd like to believe it can hold a candle against the original/arcade.

    • @NeoTurboManiac78
      @NeoTurboManiac78  2 роки тому

The point was to show the significant differences between 2D fighters on consoles from the same era. I own the Neo Geo MVS and AES versions of Samurai Shodown III and I can tell you that the Saturn port holds up fairly well. Most of the animations are there. Characters don't animate in the select screen. The sound effects and voices sound faded. Pace of play and difficulty is consistent, though the Saturn has buttons mapped to perform actions like the POW attacks, making it a little less difficult than the arcade.

Shame they removed Jubei from SS3 - him, Galford and Haohmaru are my fave SS characters :-)
I got this on AES, MVS, NGCD, PS1, Saturn, and Wii Anthology - and imo all versions play ok but the NeoGeo cart hardware versions are where its at - followed by Anthology, Saturn, NeoCD then PS1:-)
*Even the backgrounds featured better scaling and the ground 'depth of field' NG effects on the Saturn that the PS1 ports lacked.

Capcom Vs games were the achilles heel for the PS1, it couldn't do them properly, no tag mode. Some of the SNK stuff wasn't too bad, people were just spoiled back then by the awesome Neo Geo games they could play in arcades. For example, KoF 98 on PS1 is actually pretty good, I own it, it plays quite nicely, but the Saturn wasn't around for KoF 98, though it did eventually land on the DC.

Yes the PS1 version was the worst port, but for years it was the only Sam Sho I owned. My friends and I had a ton of fun playing it. These days I still have my copy, a Japanese PS1 copy sent to me by mistake when I bought SS4 off ebay for the same system (ah well, I'll get 4 eventually), the Saturn version (also have 4 for it), and the PS2 SS Anthology.
While the PS1 is an inferior version, and the Japanese version on PS1 supposedly has more slowdown than the US version (haven't tested that yet), it's still fun. My Saturn version is pretty entertaining too, I enjoy it as well, and of course I love the hell out of my PS2 Sam Sho Anthology. One day I also hope to score the Samurai Spirits Fencing Pack for the PS1 with SS1 and SS2 on it. Has some heavy load times as well, but it would look nice as an oddity in the collection, though both games on it are quite fun to play too.

I have the SNES and Genesis SS game, the Sega CD one to me is not worth it, too much missing content for a CD based game. Have the first game for Gameboy too, and want the third one on Gameboy as well (oddly they skipped #2 on Gameboy for some reason). I only have the PS2 SSA, maybe one day will get the Wii one, but for now, this one will do, it has all that I want, except SSV Special, and SNK isn't porting that one due to keeping it as a love letter as the last MVS release from them.
