    You're getting some great Boogie tones here. As a former Boogie owner who purchased one in the 80s I can tell you that the real deal would disappoint you for the simple fact that you will never have as much tone sculpting ability and versatility with the real deal. In a recording situation I'd choose a modeler like the Tonemaster Pro. But I was never a Boogie guy at heart. I much prefer getting a Marshall or a Fender and throwing a dirt pedal in front, using an EQ, Chorus and Delay. A relatively simple signal chain. When it comes to amps the speaker is the most important element because it determines whether or not you're getting the best possible tone from the circuitry. I could spend the rest of my career playing a Princeton with a good dirt pedal and be perfectly happy. But I'd also be just fine dialing in the perfected version of this tone with a modeler.

      Man. It sounds like we’re in the same sonic boat. I’m doing these videos to force myself to grow, but my boomer ass loves tube amps with analog pedals. I played a 65’ deluxe for the longest time and most of modeler signal paths before committing to learning / experimenting for UA-cam was a Deluxe and pedals in front of it haha. This channel is really helping me grow as an engineer and guitarists. Thanks for the comment, I hope to see you in the comment section more frequently. I’d love to learn from ya 🤘

    • @damionandy

      My counter advice is that I have the axefx3 and still haven’t turned it back on since having my TMP. UI is king for creativity haha. It’s the difference between having an iPhone camera and a DLSR camera. Sure, you can get “better” pictures with the fancy camera, but you have to spend more time and work harder to get it. I’d rather use something that’s fun and allows me to be creative faster.

    You have more patience than I do with a Mesa Dual Rectifier- I hate that amp with a passion- I have no idea why guys like them? One trick ponies, IMHO. You said, "Muddy", yep, that is what they sound like to me. BTW, for a Tool tone, I think a Marshall JCM800 would be best or the Friedman.

    Thank you for your content and tips for the TMP. I just got myTMP with the FR12 about 1 week ago. Your videos helped me significantly understand the volume parameters and using lo and hi cut filters to tone shape the cabs. I saw that you had some issues with get tones for your 7 string guitars with the TMP. I play 7 string guitars quite a bit and made 2 patches that I feel play nicely with 7 string guitars.
    I uploaded them to the cloud: 1. JP MARK IIC and 2. Mesa Brutz. I’m a big JP fan and was pleasantly surprised that Fender profiled a Mesa IIC+ for the TMP. I find for 7 string guitars, less Gain knob and more master volume help with keeping the low string from “flubbing” out. I did not have to boost the Mark series amp to get it tight, but the dual rectifier I feel needs one in front to tighten it up.
    Tell me what you think of the patches. Again thank you for your content.

    • @radz108
      @radz108 5 місяців тому

      @@damionandy that will be cool. I did tweak the patches a bit after posting the comment. However the tweaks were with the amp mic’s and placement. I did not change the amp settings except to bump up the lowest slider on the EQ on the Mark patch. My aim with the patches were to make it sound like the real amp through my Tonemaster FR12. I actually traded in my Mark V with Mesa 212 for the TMP and Fr12. So far no regrets. The TMP actually responses quite similarly to my Mark V in terms of pick strength and attack. Playing my TMP feels similar to playing my Mark V.

    At 10:30, the imbalance between the clean and dirty channels emphatically reminded me of the Rockman X100 I used to own. I got it in Oct. 2001, and I was so stoked to have a semblance of the Boston tone (something that I would be curious if the Tone Master Pro could emulate without needing to use the effects sends for additional units). I was kind of bummed to break it out and plug into it, only to discover that the 2 clean channels were louder (or had a higher output) than the distortion and edge channels. From the beginning of 2002 to the end of 2022, I was specifically chasing the Boston distortion tone (swing how their clean sounds could mostly be had with a JC120-type signal chain).

    • @damionandy
      @damionandy 6 місяців тому +1

      To be honest, it was an issue with the Mesa Boogie amps, I haven't had this issue with other rigs. Are you talking about the Joe Satriani Boston AMP or the Boston the band? If it's the band, I use a Deluxe or a Princeton with a tube screamer and a boost pedal. You could also use the JCM, but I haven't had enough time with the JCM on this model to dial it in for my ears. The IR seems... off haha

    how did you keep the noise level (hum) so low?

    • @damionandy
      @damionandy 24 дні тому +1

      Gotta tame your signal path. Use a noise gate and gate intelligently. It's easy to over gate, making the sound very choppy. It just comes with experience and time, but keep experimenting. I'd recommend choosing one gate and stick with it until you get the desired effect. Then try another gate and repeat until you find what works best for you and your ears. Gate too much and it's choppy. Don't gate enough and it's noisy.

    Damion - how does the modeling approach differ between modern metal, and ‘80’s metal’? There are a lot of us ‘Boomers’ out here that came up on tones like Ratt, Cinderella, Scorpions, etc….and we’re looking to get close to that. In real life many of those guys used high volume amps that got the saturated tone from putting the amp volume on 10 and OD pedals in front. (JCM800 with Boss OD) …But with high gain amps available in the TMP , is that the best starting point? Thanks for any direction! Keep up the great work! 😀

    • @damionandy
      @damionandy 6 місяців тому

      I know the plexi and JCM800 were used a lot. The 80s also used chorus more than you see it today. For scorpions, I used a Deluxe Reverb with a Ratt pedal (rodent in TMP land). Let me think on this, I may make a video for you 🤘

      Boomer?! What the flamin'? (Certain short Canadian super hero)
      Gen X for that metal baby!!! Lol.
      The EVH will actually get that tone from the 80s bro. The "Friedman" or Freeman in TMP land will as well.
      Set your amp and cab middle of view screen. To the right, put your Chorus then delay and then reverb.
      To the left, put your metal gate, then greenbox (tube screamer), then if you want a compressor (not me bro), then a sustainer.
      My direction when I say right is what you are looking at.
      Hope it helps "boomer" lol.
      Have a great day from a Gen X metal head that was there in the day gigging.
      Oh, IF you have a half stack already, play the TMP thru your clean channel set flat. Experiment with Cab IR on or off. I play thru a 20 watt tube head and the thing kicks 9 kinds of ass.
