Do you think a saragosa 6k would be able to handle this? and if so what line and leader? I was gonna go 50lb maxcuatro and a 30-40lb leader but i dunno if i would sacrifice too much capacity. any tips would help
it depend on the type of spool you have. If you have a plastic one then you'll need to stay with mono. If not then I'd use 65 pound spectra, with 30 mono on top.
Jigs are the way to go in my opinion. Ive never had a yellow rip my line because the line was in his mouth the jig is long enough so your line remains out of the fishes mouth all the time. You can cast a metal jig that weighs 3 oz a long distance and know its on all the time. you can immediately switch to yoyo with no issues. Just landed some huge yellow tail on a yoyo last month in Baja, the lures weighed 6oz. and some weighed 4.5 oz
Thank you Dan.💯 "Rentarodders" scares me in more ways than one. For those reasons, congrats for those who uses bait...😊" I will take a bow". Thank you.😁
Good day kind sir! i have been frequenting Catalina and for the last three trips i have tossed nothing but a green and yellow tady with a treble hook. I have gotten so much action that i have't touched live bait on any of these trips. I have caught bonita, red snapper, sheephead, black bass, barracuda, and a halibut believe it or not. But when i actually hook a fish large enough to peel line, it eventually comes off. I was wondering if there was anything i was doing wrong :( I'm using 25 pound line on a coffee grinder reel, and i toss yoyo style, surface, and sink to the bottom. Twice i have seen the yellows color before it comes off. Is my line to light? Am i fighting wrong? Is this just the name of the game? hahaha. Please let me know what you think.
+andrew blank i'm guessing that when you get bit using a jig that you swing and try to set the hook. When you are fishing with a metal jig you don't want to swing your rod to set the hook, just pull the rod toward and keep winding.
I already learned that lesson the hard way! I no longer attempt to hook the fish by raising my rod. I continue to reel and keep pressure on the rod. The last two yellows that I saw color on came off while they were attempting to swim sideways parallel to the boat but away from me. If I accidentally release tension for even just a second, is that long enough for the fish to spit the jig out potentially? Or is it safe to assume that they should be hooked pretty good?
You're like the Mister Rogers of SoCal fishing.
Thanks Dan.
spatulapancakepork LOL! thanks!
When you yoyo a jig, do you let your jig hit the bottom before winding up or start reeling sooner?

Hey Dan, how would you rig a new penn jigmaster 500 for light yellowtail fishing?
it depend on the type of spool you have. If you have a plastic one then you'll need to stay with mono. If not then I'd use 65 pound spectra, with 30 mono on top.
Awesome, thank you :)

eli madr yes i like using jigs for yellow too.
I can cast a 3 oz jig 40 - 50 yards - is that enough distance from the boat?
how much fishing line of leader from the braid for hook a jig for yellowtail?
I have to have at least 75 yards
@@dansportfishing thanks, but I've seen lots of fishing video saying that at least 36" 40" of Leader hook up a metal jig
@@dansportfishing i'm using 40 lbs braid so how many lbs of Leader do I need to use?
Dan, I really enjoy your videos. Straight forward and informative without all the "Sup Dude" and "Whoa Bro!" Keep up the good work and thanks.
+Richard Thaxton Thank you, I'm glad you enjoy my videos.
What weight size you use for this steel jigs? 6oz or 4.5 oz?
When’s best time for yellowtail?

How many oz. ? I like the idea of welded rings.
Jose Ponce 3 3/8 and 4.5oz would be best.
How about the Flat Fall jigs? Are they good for yellows or do yellows prefer salas or tady jigs?
+Mike Maldonado they all work when the fish are hungry.

Had good luck with the butterfly jig on the 40th

what is the minimal speed you can use to yoyo? Would a 4.1 work from a baja special?
+eli madr yes that would work fine.
what is the name of these lures thanks in advance
They are called, Magic Metal Jigs. Here's a link you can use to order them, sport-fishing.com/product/magic-metal-mm2/
What boat were you on? Out of what port?
basseraday the Chief out of H&M Landing in San Diego.
What was the ounces on the jig?
+HisLoveArmy 3 3/8 and 4 1/2 works great for this kind of fishing.
