I’d never heard of this case previously. It’s interesting and sad. I watched the author being interviewed on another UA-cam channel. I’ll have to get the book. I love it when you talk about crimes and go to the scenes. Thanks so much for your hard work. You go through much time and expense to bring us all these stories. Roving reporter. It’s much appreciated!
Thanks so much. Your words are encouraging to me. I just remembered a similar cop killings story here that I'll video next week. But I won't have to travel much.
DD, this video is sadder than the movie because we get to see the actual spot. My sister was engaged to a guy who became a St. Paul cop after they broke up. I awoke one morning and saw his familiar face on the news, I knew right away he was dead. He was working under cover when he was shot in an alley. It really affected my sister and probably ruined her marriage to a different cop (wish she had tried for someone else), it's a really brutal life
I remember when this happened, I was 16 years old, I live near Bakersfield, very close to home. Sad thing those poor officers had to go through. Can’t imagine the terror, poor guys. Great job Dave 😔( I never knew exactly where it happened, I just remember hearing it was somewhere near “The Grapevine” I think. Again, great job locating exact location, and great storyline Dave!) AWESOME!
I read The Onion Field about 30 years ago. I was horrified at Powell's crime. I felt so bad for Karl Hettinger. I understand a movie was made about this abominable act.
The cops found the car at Tiny's garage in Lamont california. Tiny's garage used to be on gal Marie between Columbine and Waco street. I grew up on Columbine street. In the early 70's
But I don’t condemn the officer. You never know for sure how we would react in certain situations. Also the way Officer Heringer was treated afterwards was horrible.
The former Campbell residence is located less than half-a-mile from where I lived while being raised in my formative yrs and I would occasionally walk past it to-and-from high school. I both read the Wambaugh book and viewed the film @ least twice. And I've visited Campbell's gravesite a number of times.
@@famousgraveswithdiamonddave Actually I currently reside a just little over a mile from where I was reared in Chatsworth; I like my stompin' grounds too much to move and am able to visit quite a few cemeteries out around in these parts. I'm not too great a distance from the old Spahn Movie Ranch (I visited there three weeks after the murders), and my go-to grocery store (which is located less than two blocks from me) was one of the Manson family's favorite spots for their "daily garbage runs".
@@famousgraveswithdiamonddave Today it's a Ralphs (back then it was Hughes Market) on Devonshire St @ Canoga Ave and the family would raid the backside of the premises where the dumpsters were situated. Down the street a piece from there is The Munch Box burger stand where Charlie would wait for Susan Atkins to emerge from the nearby former Candy Cat strip joint where she did some "entertaining" and earn a few bucks and when finished then cross the road to meet up w/ her biding "leader".

@@famousgraveswithdiamonddave gotcha. I am trying to find video archive interviews from the 80s and 90s but I am probably out of luck… try and retain them for family. I never really searched this online and was surprised to see how many are intrigued by this still. Thx again…my search continues :)
Has anyone ever told you that your voice sounds just like a guy by the name of Huell Howser? He did California's Gold, died years ago, but your voice is very similar. FYI I graduated high school with officers Campbell's daughter.
Yes, a few times. I loved Huell. Watched many of his programs. I went to his dome home and flew my drone around. How is Ian's daughter doing now days if you know. I assume this was ion CA. Thanks for watching and leaving a comment.
Man, you sound just like him. I’m gonna have to listen to more of your programs. I don’t stay in touch with her. The high school was pretty cliquish and I definitely did not fit in. She seem to be getting along very well at that time.
