Fantastic!!! I'm a fellow Hoya (CAS '86) teaching gifted and talented elementary kids in a Title One school in Wichita, Kansas -- Wanted to tell you that my 4th & 5th grade math kids will be watching this video tomorrow when we create our own area models for multiplication of mixed fractions using the distributive property. Thanks for sharing -- Great explanation & visuals!
Not what we did in 1979, but this was really helpful understand how to help my son. He knew the answer to the equation, but did not know how to draw the Common Core model. I wish the kids could just figure out the answers with whatever method works best for them...
This is my issue. My daughter could get the product, using the same methods we were taught, but couldn’t explain or graph the model, which was required in the lesson. I sure as heck wasn’t helpful until I found this video. I seriously want to know the practical application of this method in every day life. I’m a rock, and I got the old way better than this.
I appreciate this very well put together video and explanation. Great job. What I don’t understand is the practical application of this learning method. I’m forced by government fiat to explain and help my child with this, but I also showed her the same way we’ve been doing it for thousands of years, and had time to cook dinner in the time it took to do it this way.
As a teacher I appreciate the way this is explained. The children don't understand this way and I feel that if we go back to the way it was previously taught and add this in after to enhance learning it would work much better. We must get rid of the Common Core Curriculum because it's not working. The first year of common core kids are graduating this year. They know nothing.
I find the models SO pointless, but you're video explained them really well! Thanks for help man!
