    Camp Damascus is an adult book, and was already involved in a situation where it was nominated for a YA award for the Stokers (I think) and Chuck spoke up and got it withdrawn so an actual YA novel could take its place.

    I thought To Shape a Dragon’s Breath is YA! I’ve definitely been talking about it as YA even though it has crossover appeal. And Study in Drowning is YA as well. It’s published by Harper Teen.

      I think the fact that I couldn't tell if Ava Reid released a YA with a YA imprint or if fans just assumed she was YA is part of why this list is always a struggle for me. Cause her wolfsman book was heavily talked about as YA when it came out. I also think a book published by an adult imprint is more inaccessible to a YA audience with the $10 price difference and that always bothers me and it always feels like "duh the book actually available on shelves where adults look will be picked up by the adult audience that votes for the hugos" its not as egregious to me as when Novik's book won but I do think this lack of clear criteria makes it a hard award for me to understand what this award is measuring. Its also such a low voted category, especially for nominations that I just think this is not something the world con fandom doesn't really have the expertise or care to measure accurately? Like obviously the individuals who nominate care but its only 300-400 nominations and around 700 votes compared to the 3000 ballots submitted. Sorry for the ramble but even though I have accepted it as a feature not a bug of this award I always dislike the lack of strict criteria.

    If you ever get around to reading some of the works from the short fiction categories (shortlist only, or adding in some of the longlist), I think that would make for a great video that I would love to watch!
    (And I could even send you copies of the translated works if you did want to make that a project--for review purposes only, of course.)

    A Study in Drowning is actually Ava Reid's YA debut and from Ava's IG we know that it gets a sequel and that Ava is working on another YA novel, so she's not just an adult fiction writer.

    I really liked to see how much the Baldur's Gate 3 writers appreciated the award, unlike Hollywood, who can't be bothered to pick theirs up 99% of the time. 🚀

      Have you read any of Stross’ other works?
      The books are quite short, so aren’t too much of an investment
      The plots can tend to be a bit all over the place so it really come down to whether you like Bob and the other central characters and the humour that comes from mixing together occult / spy type missions with the bureaucracy of a government department

    • @marcjohnson5991

    Oh, that's an interesting result on the best game. Obviously not the first place, Baldur's Gate 3 didn't have much real competition in that regard, but 3rd place caught me by surprise, I hadn't heard of that game before. Apparently it's a puzzle game, and it has 98% approval on Steam, that's insane. I'm really curious to play it. Oh, and Alan Wake 2's placement saddens me, but it's understandable. I think the other games do fit the profile of voters more than AW2

    Adult books being eligible (and often winning) in the ya category is infuriating and unprofessional. It would be very easy for them to avoid it by being clear about eligibility. YA books already have a problem of books being published with adults in mind, stuff like this makes the issue even more prevalent. Adult books have so many different hugos and ya has one that's not even considered a hugo
    To be clear this is not a jab at Moniquill Blackgoose and I wish her the best, that book is great and should've been up against the other best novel candidates

    • @LiteratureScienceAlliance
      @LiteratureScienceAlliance  2 місяці тому +3

      I just wish that it would be published with a YA imprint so its more accessible for the younger audiences its intended for. A hardback in the US is now $30 while a YA hardback is still around $21 (which is still bananas but more available) but again I have mainly accepted that the Hugos is just never going to be a place that gives YA the attention it deserves anyways and this is WAY better than Novik winning imo

    • @loruffa
      @loruffa 2 місяці тому +1

      @@wallacejames221 I wasn't aware she categorized it as YA herself, that's a different situation then. The publisher has done the book a huge disservice with marketing and publishing it as adult when YA books are already so expensive. It makes it so much more challenging to get it into the right hands, especially in school libraries

    • @loruffa
      @loruffa 2 місяці тому +3

      @@LiteratureScienceAlliance Naomi Novik choosing not to turn down nominations for an adult series twice when she's as established as she is... that was certainly a choice. The fault lies mainly with the host to ensure the integrity of the award, but it does mean she can never claim people calling it YA are wrong since she's shown she's fine with it when it benefits her

    • @bookishdi

    I would definitely call the Blackgoose novel YA, having read it. It features a teenager, it's a coming of age story, it's a school setting, and the themes are clearly for teens imo. But I get the complaints about the price issues.
    Chuck Tingle's book, however, I probably wouldn't call YA. Honestly, I'd put it in New Adult if that category was used for anything besides romance.

    • @LiteratureScienceAlliance
      @LiteratureScienceAlliance  2 місяці тому +1

      I think for me part of having age categories in publishing is having the books be more accessible to those who are younger and don't have as much money, also its always like "no duh the YA shelved in the adult section got read by more adults" so feels like a weird advantage in that regard as well. Regardless way less mad about this than I was Novik's wins

    • @AnotherTurning
      @AnotherTurning 2 місяці тому

      @@LiteratureScienceAlliance Yeah, all of that makes sense, and I agree. This one makes me annoyed from a marketing and price standpoint because it would be a great book for teens, so it's frustrating that it's less accessible to them!
