I've heard that it depends on your pain tolerance. To make it hurt less though and to make sure it doesn't do damage, definitely make sure you get it pierced with a needle and not the gun. The gun can actually shatter your cartilage cause it's mainly meant for more softer parts of your body like the earlobes, and not something more firm like the cartilage.
